i love the bright colors that they used in the scenes that take place under the sea. One le the things that I don't like about the classic is that the backgrounds are very dark

To be honest, I liked that spot. I certainly love the part with the blowfish and the jellyfishes, as they were adorable and visually stunning.

Nah, I prefer the darkness of the original film. One of the benefits of TLM being made largely before CAPS (other than the final scene), the thing that makes it more similar to the other '80s films, is all that darkness in the corners giving it a feeling of heaviness that made it unique to the rest of the Renaissance.

Incidentally, I had been watching my old DVD of Howl's Moving Castle last night (recently re-read the book, the movie's never been as good as the book but it's alright as its own version, either way I wanted to see it again) and there was a preview for TLM Platinum DVD. I always like watching those little compilation ads for the original. Still, it just made me remember how hideous they made the film look before the Blu-ray Diamond.

Tritan would interest me more if he were bare chested as in the 1989 classic, rather than wearing the breastplate.

I guess they have to consider the actors and whether they'd be comfortable with being half naked or whether the audience will be comfortable with that. Similarly, I think Ariel won't be naked after her transformation, but probably her tail will turn into a skirt (similar to how it was done on Once Upon a Time).

I googled some shirtless images of Javier Bardem and he could DEFINITELY pull it off! What a daddy! Woof!

Damn... Flounder DOES look hideous. And I suspect inexpressive. Ugh.
I fear what Sebastian will look like....

Isn't it a little weird how little coverage Ariel has on her top compared to everyone else? Not that I want less coverage but it's like the difference between a bra and a full shirt. Just a nit-picking thing I noticed...

Well, her sister that has the pink hair next to her actually does look more revealing

The MPA rating Has already confirmed That this pretty much will be the case, As it only mentions “action/peril and some scary images” nothing to do with “sensuality” or “suggestive material/content“ etc. which would be the case if she was naked etc. They also did that Kind of Transformation from a mermaid into a rag dress/skirt [The one that they cover her over in the movie] in kingdom hearts II :)

If the original got away with it, why couldn't the live action? You can get away with a lot when you backlight and silhouette enough.

Because this isn't an issue of getting away with it with the ratings board. It's an ideology-based decision. Disney doesn't want to get accused of sexualizing young women and catering to the male gaze.

That doesn't fit as the reason Ursula and Triton are both covered up to the nines now, so I doubt it's the reason for Ariel. Male gaze is something present in films largely catered to a male audience (like Jasmine in Aladdin), not one that focuses itself on female viewers like TLM. Well, Disney makes movies for the whole family, ofc, but naturally the executives behind the scenes will think of a male-lead film as "for boys" and a female-lead film as "for girls," regardless of if they appeal to everyone.

To me, it's lacking in realism to give a bunch of underwater beings lots of clothes to wear..... Well, "lacking in realism" was the nice phrase, "stupid" was the first one that came to my mind, actually.

You’re literally not make any sense at all; you just answered the question as to how and why Ariel will not be seen naked after she transforms if both Triton and Ursula are indeed going to be covered up

I wasn't "answering" any question with my post??? I have no idea what you're talking about.

I disagreed with Sotiris that "male gaze" is the reason why Ariel won't be shadowed but still nude here like in the original, since "male gaze" was clearly not the reason Ursula and Triton are also covered up the same way Ariel has been. The reason they're being covered up is because the people making this film are stupid and they have horrible taste in costumes at that, not because they're trying to avoid controversy about "male gaze" or whatever.

It’s not that it’s your opinion, it’s the way that you’re explaining it, or rather lack there of. You’re coming in and saying that “this is the reason why Triton and Ursula are covered up so much“ in relation to the topic at hand of whether or not Ariel will be seen naked after she transforms, Saying That you doubt this is the reason for such a thing. Your wording it in a confusing way States that you are critiquing them doing this, Calling them stupid, and yet You literally just Provided a very reasonable reason as to why they would do such a thing, and yet you yourself don’t seem to be aware of it?
