Re: Encanto
It looks like Disney's planning to milk Encanto for all its worth. I bet a series of shorts will be coming to Disney+ very soon.
Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/13/movi ... bruno.htmlThe “Encanto” directors said they were open to the possibility of a sequel, stage show or spinoff series. “I would love for there to be continuing stories of these characters because they’re real people to us,” Bush said. “Ninety minutes is not enough time to spend with the Madrigals.”
Source: https://collider.com/encanto-2-movie-se ... l-miranda/Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote:I do think there's an appetite to further explore the Madrigal family, given how many characters there are, and how many gifts there are. And also where we leave the story. Now there is sort of this more fully realized version of themselves. Which way can we go? I think it's a question of when and not if, and what form that will take. Is that another movie? Is that a series? Is that a stage adaptation where we have a little more time, because stage shows are generally an hour longer than movies? And we haven't had conversations as to what form that will take, but I mean, yeah, I'd be down to continue to explore that. I love writing for Dolores and Camilo. I'd love to write more for them. I'd love to write more for Isabela. So I'm not sure what the next form of that will be, but we haven't had specific conversations about it's this or it's this.

I think both Raya and Encanto would work really well as their own franchises, they have enough unexplored characters and world building that could be expanded upon. Whether they'd actually be successful financially is another thing entirely. As for the Princes franchise, I think Mirabel would be a better fit than Raya. She already has an "I want" song, a "castle"(Casita,) she's just missing an animal sidekick since most of the ones in the film are really Antonio's, though I guess the toucan could count since it does share a memorable scene with her(I found out his name is Pico which is super cute b/c its Spanish for beak.) And the Princess Line seriously needs some Latin rep. Raya only has an animal sidekick(TukTuk). Though I suppose that temple/palace her & her father were in could count as a "castle." Its a shame there were no songs though. Even Brave has that one pretty song Touch the Sky.Sotiris wrote:The best bet for Encanto's afterlife is the Disney Princess brand.

Re: Encanto
I think Raya and Mirabel will both be in the DP line eventually. I consider "Lead the Way" Raya (the character)'s theme; thankfully, it's the only End Title song (of those that aren't simply covers of an in-film song) that I've liked from the Revival films aside from "Never Knew I Needed." Well, "Something That I Want" is alright. I don't remember the Brave song.

Re: Encanto
Highlights: Jared Bush says he likes watching the Encanto TikTok videos; Spring 2020 they had a video meeting, Lin said it's like a ghost story and he started composing the song; Bruno was closer to Mirabel's age, they couldn't keep the name Oscar Madrigal due to real-life people with that name, and Jared sent Lin a list of 5 alternate names and Lin said "definitely Bruno" (‘Bruno, no, no, no.’); "Miranda then recorded a demo track in which he sang all 10 parts. “It was like Lin-Manuel on steroids,” said Adassa"; Jamal Sims (film's choreographer) and his team spent ~ 2 weeks creator the choreography with the storyboards and Lin's track as guides; (has an imbedded video about choreography: https://youtu.be/UZYn0SNwzEM); (and a TikTok link: https://www.tiktok.com/@kai_martinez__); Assistant choreographer Kai Martinez- "who is a first-generation Colombian American, also served as an animation reference consultant and provided the filmmakers with crucial insights into cultural nuances and mannerisms.".unprincess wrote:damn it I really wanna read this article but its pay walled. :xSotiris wrote:Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/13/movi ... bruno.html
Byron Howard: "“‘Dos Oruguitas’ was so central to the emotional theme of the movie,” ... “It’s probably the most critical bit of musical storytelling in the whole film because it has to do with the history of the family and Mirabel understanding her grandmother.”Meanwhile, because of Covid precautions, the voice actors recorded their parts separately... Rhenzy Feliz sang the shapeshifting cousin Camilo’s lines... and said he channeled “theater kid” energy in his character’s dramatic delivery. Adassa... “At first my rap was going to be an octave higher,”...“I thought, she’s such an intimate speaker, I’m going to do it an octave lower. And it worked.”
Since "Under the Sea," most Disney song submissions have been ballads, so "Bruno" would have been like an underdog. Since Lin has other songs from 2021, votes could have been split (but he did also write "Dos Oruguitas," so huh?). Then the quote that Sotiris posted.
Luca/Encanto = Bruno:
show Disney has an anti-Bruno agenda, the filmmakers insist it isn’t so.
“At the end of ‘Encanto,’ Bruno turns out to be a great guy,” Bush said. “So, you know, we’ve resurrected that name. I think Bruno should be proud of that.”

Re: Encanto
I’ve only quickly skimmed through some of the discussion here; I’ll have to come back when I have more time to thoroughly read through, but I find it interesting that people are mostly disappointed in this film.Personally, I really couldn’t get into Raya, even though I definitely wanted to, but I did have higher hopes for this one.
I absolutely loved this. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve enjoyed songs from a Disney film this much since the old days when I was a teen (click if you dare, I sort of look like a very white Mirabel), back during their mid-renaissance days under Howard Ashman. The opening song felt inspired by the exposition provided in “Belle” from you-know-what. “Waiting on a Miracle” was a little heartbreaking to me, but in a good way; perhaps so many relate that it’s considered a poor trope, but tropes work for a reason. “Surface Pressure” initially felt like it was a going a different direction than it actually headed, and is a standout for me. It’s also Little Dude’s current favorite (in the car, he asks me to play “the strong song” from the soundtrack, lol). I felt most everything tied up nicely from “We don’t Talk About Bruno,” especially Isabella’s and Deloris’ prophesies … and damn, is it ever catchy, lol. And it’s true … sometimes the “weird” members of the family get a bad rap (raises hand). I really enjoyed seeing a broken family coming back together again after years of misunderstandings, perhaps partially because that’s kind of what been happening to my own family in RL.
The art direction/imagery was absolutely gorgeous; I could get lost in that world. I’m anxious to revisit.

aww I hope things get better for you and your family. I think a lot of people are seeing their own families and relatives in the Madrigals and that's why its caught on so well. Its just really relatable.Elladorine wrote:I really enjoyed seeing a broken family coming back together again after years of misunderstandings, perhaps partially because that’s kind of what been happening to my own family in RL.
no there haven't been any doll shortages but the film was only made available on streaming on Christmas Day(Frozen was released in November giving it almost a whole month of exposure for Christmas shopping) which is when it really took off so who knows how the doll sales would have been during a regular year release schedule. As a doll/toy collector myself I will say I have yet to buy any of the Encanto dolls b/c Ive been really disappointed with them. The Disney Store ones have nice articulated bodies but they did a bad job making them look like the characters, the Jakks ones look more like the characters(except Luisa who looks bad) but have really cheap clothes and rigid bodies. Both brands have really cheap looking hair. And Jakks other toy offerings suck, the mini figures are really ugly(the Camilo ones are so bad its become a meme lol.) Kinda wish Hasbro had gotten the license. Not that their versions would have been any better since the Raya dolls/toys haven't been so great either.Warm Regards wrote:I'm more curious about doll sales for instance -- how many Mirabel and Isabela dolls did they sell this past Christmas? During Frozen mania Anna/Elsa dolls were selling out constantly and going on ebay for higher prices.

Re: Encanto
Im happy its doing so well, makes me wonder just how well it would have done during a non-pandemic year.
They really need to ramp up the merch though, the merch available right now is really subpar. I'm expecting Hot Topic and Box lunch will eventually launch a bunch of new stuff before the year is over considering those stores popularity with the same teen/young adult social media crowd that's really taken to this film. Where's my Bruno poncho inspired hoodie?
Also expecting a 2nd batch of Pops from Funko.

Re: Encanto
CNN is reporting that "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is now the #1 song on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, making it the first Disney song to do so since "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin" in 1993.
(For the record, "Let It Go" from "Frozen" only peaked at #5 in 2014.)

Re: Encanto
So what is more impressive: Encanto's Bruno being the first #1 Billboard hit since 1992's Aladdin's A Whole New World or Frozen's Let It Go being the only Oscar winner for Best Song since 1999's Tarzan's You'll Be in My Heart. I've also been hearing on social media that Encanto "Ended Frozen", whatever that means

Re: Encanto
its a Disney animated film with a fully POC cast, it wont outperform (financially and in popularity)Frozen with its majorly white cast, especially these days. Only the soundtrack is doing well and that's probably due to the rise of music streaming sites and LMM.

Re: Encanto
I don't know either. Thankfully I liked Encanto and "We Don't Talk About Bruno" / "Surface Pressure" (it felt like I was one of the few that posted a positive review back when it first came out in theaters), so I can be happy for its success here, but people have been pressed by Frozen's existence for years and years. It's sort of like what happened with The Lion King, this counter culture desire to hate what's popular, but twice as bad because it was a "girl's film" and how dare it hold the top title.DisneyEra wrote:I don't understand why they have to belittle Frozen for, they can't just enjoy Encanto's success on it's own merit.
@unprincess: Yeah, says a lot about the state of the world right now, but the race of the characters probably does play a role in the desire to attack Frozen.
