Surivivor: Battle of the Modern Musicals (Nominations)

As a musical nut, I was thinking maybe we could play survivor with all the musicals released from 1980 onward. First, we have to decide among ourselves what is a "musical." Should we limit it to tradition musicals, which are musicals where the actors and characters break into song and dance, or should we include non-traditional musicals, which are films that usually involve songs that the characters sing as part of a performance piece or the film could rely heavily on backdrop songs to move the narrative. (Examples of such would be The School of Rock and Sister Act.) Also, do we want to include animated films as well? When you post your nominations, make sure to label the film as such - traditional, and non-traditional with animated films falling into either two categories.

I think we should aslo ask ourselves if the people playing the game want this to be objective. For instance, will people keep recent hits like Chicago just because that's the only musical they've seen in the past twenty years?

I think everyone should be eligible to play. I always view these games as a reflection of each member's experience with each of the films, including possibly not having seen them. Of course, if you haven't seen many musicals, you probably won't have a high enough level of interest to play a game involving a bunch of musicals you've never seen or heard of.

But yeah, Sister Act-ish movies should definitely be allowed! As for animated films... hmmm, I'd say yes, but then that adds a LOT of Disney movies to the mix, which might make it unfair. They are musicals, though, and surely live-action Disney fare will be allowed anyways. Tough call.

I don't really consider Sister Act and School of Rock musicals. I don't think they should be allowed. But I do like Sister Act and films of that nature, so I won't be upset if they are included. Just my opinion.

They aren't Traditional musicals per se, but a lot of people have bened the rules of the genre because of the dirth of musicals since the 1980s.

I think they should, but if more people say no, then I'm fine with that too. We need more feedback, and if you guys could put you nominations, that'd be great, too.

I might agree with you there. I think I have the biggest problem with including "School of Rock" in the mix.

i think there will already be more than enough options with just 'traditional' musicals (book musicals), whether stage, film, or animated. it's arguable that sister act and school of rock don't utilize the songs to actually help tell the story. just the fact that they're singing songs is part of the story, but the song lyrics don't advance the plot. so those would be considered 'revues'. so, maybe include them, maybe not, but that's the main difference.
