Raya and the Last Dragon
Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
The teaser trailer was underwhelming, I also prefer Raya's previous design and something about this film reminded me Star Wars more than anything, especially the desert scenes. However I also remind myself that Frozen II had an exceptional teaser trailer and the film itself turned out to be underwhelming, so maybe this will be an opposite situation. We'll see...

Looks gorgeous and epic. Can't wait to see more. The world seems grand and a lot of variation. Good first taste!

Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
It turned out that this trailer is mostly focused on Raya and Tuk Tuk for now. Still good!
And the design of Sisu shows some alterations: no more pink, only white and blue! :O :O according to that drawing at 01:32
It shows also a lot of action, but with a different feel compared to 2019 D23 Expo.

It's a bit of a shame they don't show you more of the gorgeous backgrounds from which a lot of the atmosphere comes from (and also more slow-paced sequences.)Clindor wrote:It turned out that this trailer is mostly focused on Raya and Tuk Tuk for now.

I like that the fact they kept the idea of the water flowing backward to spot the entrance of a sacred temple. When I first saw that at the D23 Expo, I was wondering if I saw correctly^^ I had to stare at it without blinking until the shot was over..

Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
I was underwhelmed by the teaser, but hey it IS a teaser! I thought it did a great job introducing Raya and the action & premise of the movie.
Is it just me or did they rip off the Katara/Kora designs for young Raya?

Huh. I didn't get that feeling at all, The beginning of the music was comedic and that got me worried for a sec.rodrigo_ca wrote:I got this hip new film that will age badly and might as well have been done by Dreamworks.

It might only be the way Disney thinks it is best to promote the film at this stage of the campaign. Does someone remember the first teaser for Tangled?

It definitively has a different feel from the clips they showed us at D23, where it was slower, building the atmosphere... and a low voice makes itself hear resonating inside of dark temple, suddenly a dragon might emerge, and the action popped up from here! I think the final product will be between this and what they choose to show us in the teaser.
If I would have one complain among what is new to me, as some of you already spotted it, is the way it looks like Disney is trying to teach little girls to just wake up perfect ^^.
Which is not as strong a message as what they used to do in the past, if that turns out to be the case..
but so many sequences of young Raya already being a perfect little ninja! Where does that come from?.. ^^ (they already did it with the Mulan remake..)
Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
One remark: in the longer video clip showed at D23 Expo, when Raya visits the temple (if that's the same temple, because in the D23 clip it is really hidden inside the nature/jungle, very narrow and almost completely dark [so that Raya uses a torch to find her inside before Sisu blows the flame] so the artists would have completely changed its looks), she is an adult. And the water flowing backward on the stairs does it on a much larger surface and also comes from a giant rock that seems to levitate above the supposed entrance.

Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
Wow! Well, I can pretty much say that I agree with most of you here: What a generic and underwhelming trailer! It was almost worse than Tangled`s much debated and controversial trailer 10 years ago! It was pretty much shaped to be a trailer to a Tomb Raider/action movie (which I guess was intentional), but in a generic way. Tuk Tuk was the only redeeming thing about the trailer, as he was adorable. I also liked the brief shots of the townspeople. Otherwise, Raya herself looked even more generic than in the leaked concept art. Let`s hope that we`ll get a better and more faithful trailer soon.

I think this trailer tries to be to Avatar (the series) what the Tangled teaser was to a Dreamworks animated feature.DisneyFan09 wrote:It was almost worse than Tangled`s much debated and controversial trailer 10 years ago! It was pretty much shaped to be a trailer to a Tomb Raider/action movie

At last a teaser that lasts more than a few seconds and shows some actual characters and animation.
Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
I don't think it is supposed to be a Cingulata since as we know they are from South America. But Tuk Tuk looks like a fantastic creature based on a relative species. Wasn't there somebody who posted the answer in this thread?MrXemnas1992 wrote:Okay, I must know...any ideas on what Tuk Tuk is supposed to be?
Also, officially nothing left of the cool axe-weapon Raya used to handle ? (then again from D23 content) I tried to spot it in every shot of the trailer, I could not find it. Now it's everything for this CGI remodelled Shan-Yu's sword. How cool it was to see a Disney heroine manipulate an axe-like weapon

Now that there are more shots of Raya available in daylight, the color of her hair and the way they reflect the light is pretty similar to Moana.
Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
A few caveats...
- Are we really getting another “daughter of a chief must protect/find stone/rock/relic” movie?
- I don’t mind the serious tone of the fight but the juxtaposition with the comedy just makes it feel very Dreamworks/Blue Sky.
- Raya’s waterbender Halloween costume is really good! She nailed it.

Re: Raya and the Last Dragon
My first impression was the same, that it looked like her nose and lips had been blown up... But then I looked at that old picture they released of her (I have it saved on my computer) and I thought that maybe I was wrong? That it could be the expression on her face that makes her look different (a smirk with the lips upturned and the cheek lines versus the serious one on the other picture) and the fact she’s not pointed straight at the camera could have made her nose appear smaller. IDK, I’m leaning more towards the impression that it was changed now... I liked the earlier design. :/Sotiris wrote: I'm still worried about that. While it's hard to tell if there were any changes made to the shape of her head because it's obscured by the hat and the shape of her lips because of the smirk she's doing, her nose has definitely been altered. It's now wider and rounder than before.
EDIT:
I just finished watching the trailer... I liked it personally? I mean, I didn't think we'd see this much of her as a child. I do agree with the Korra comparisons. Aside from that criticism, I enjoyed it. Personally, leaving aside the clothes and the dangling hair things that are straight up Korra, I admit I do like her child design better than those from the rest of the revival going back to TP&TF. At least this actually looked like a real child rather than a chibi version of the regular design the way they've been doing for the rest of the Revival... I remember talking once before how much I hated how they always give us these child designs with enormous eyes and doughy cheeks of all the princesses in the intros now (it happens in other non-princess films, too, occasionally, like Finding Dory for example), trying to pander for an "Awww, cuuute!!" reaction. They do know that not all children look the same, right? I'm glad Raya's child design broke from the Revival mold in that way at least, jmo.
I liked Tuk Tuk. The images of her riding that creature was one of those things that I'd wonder over whether or not I would like in the finished product. But he was really cute here. Not as much as Pua, but at least not annoying like I worried it would be. I think animal sidekicks / fluff-merchandise-in-the-making are better when they are non-speaking.
The artwork she touches when she's talking about the last dragon is really pretty. Reminded me sort of Samurai Jack's aesthetic. That last shot of teen Raya--yeah, her design changed. At least she looks better than that poster from yesterday made her look; she still has that relatively thin / narrow look to her body. The desert background looks great. The logo looks great. I'm really excited to finally see this.

I noticed the similarity to Shan-Yu / Mulan’s sword the moment it began appearing in the artwork they’d show. I don’t mind that she has a sword, but they could’ve tried to make it not so much a ripoff of Mulan.Clindor wrote: Now it's everything for this CGI remodelled Shan-Yu's sword.

So now Sisu has 2 horns (in the trailer) instead of one.. Or is one behind the other in her previous design? I just can't remember.Sotiris wrote:First look at Sisu, the last dragon.
