Pink Panther Movies/Cartoons coming to Blu-ray!

MGM is releasing the remaining Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers plus the cartoons on Blu-ray next year to commorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 film!:

"•NEXT YEAR marks the 50th anniversary of the first The Pink Panther movie. This starred David Niven, Robert Wagner, Claudia Cardinale, Capucine and, but of course, Peter Sellers as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau.
Sellers would go on to reprise the role in A Shot in the Dark, and make three more Pink Panther movies.

MGM is bringing out a lavish DVD-Blu Ray box set of all the Sellers Panther pics. This will include cartoons -- as well as the sly animated Pink Panther who opened and closed the movies."


Seems to be wonderful (and surprising) news!

But my two cents:

-They mentioned ALL the Peter Sellers Pink Panther films. Does this mean this set will include The Return Of The Pink Panther? MGM owns all rights to it except home video rights which are with Universal under the Focus Features division. Would be nice if MGM could just sub-license the title from them just this once. Though it does seem Return is likely to be included (and if comes to fruition, will mark the first time the film will be released on home video by its respected owner)

-And it seems no Inspector Clouseau, Curse, and Son? I would recommend though MGM (or Shout! Factory since they a sub-licensing deal with MGM) to release them individually later in the year (including Return from Universal should the set not have it).

-And what about the cartoons; I know that it will be a selection, but will they be in their original full screen formats (which I prefer) or in matted widescreen (as they were shown theatrically) and will there be work done to find non-laugh track versions of several shorts if they are included (like Shocking Pink or Trail Of The Lonesome Pink)?

Well...after 4 years, Shout! and MGM are finally releasing the first 6 Pink Panther films on Blu-ray!!!:

OK, update time. According the Shout Select on Facebook, the set has been delayed to June 27th:

"Some good news, and some bad news.

Bad news - we have to move the street date on The Pink Panther Collection.

Good news - We have an opportunity to film a few more interviews for the set (some talent had some scheduling issues)… AND it gives us more time to finish up some new transfers that we are working on. Yes, there are scans being done on a few of the films, we will announce full details soon, we promise!

Mark Arnold posted this in the Think Pink: DePatie-Freleng Group:

"I received the assignment yesterday to record some audio DVD/Blu-ray commentaries about some dog, some shark and some other character with the initials P.P."


Now we know The Dogfather and Misterjaw are the last cartoon series to be released in the DePatie/Freleng Collection from Kino/MGM, but if the last means anything, we could be seeing the Pink Panther cartoons again!!!


Also, I got The Pink Panther Film Collection last week (thanks early 2 week shipping Shout!) and it is fantastic! The only gripe is that the Mono and Stereo tracks for The Pink Panther Strikes Again are low-pitched. The 5.1 remix is luckily in the original pitch.
