Beyond the Sky (DisneyToon Studios)

Post by Sotiris »

Disney has dated a new DisneyToon Studios film for theatrical release on April 12, 2019. What do you think it could be? A third installment for Planes, another Cars spin-off, a Frozen spin-off, or a different franchise altogether?

The director for Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast teased about new things coming from the studio while doing press for the film.
Q: Since you’re attached to DisneyToon, my son has demanded to know if there’s another “Planes” movie coming that you guys know about. In general, though, can you talk about what’s next for DisneyToon in general and you guys in particular?

Steve Loter: There’s a lot of development currently at DisneyToon, on a multitude of projects. I will go on record as saying they are very, very exciting. So yeah. We’ll see what the future holds. But for me, it’s 100% vacation. [...] Then, when I show up, we’ll see what the future holds and what the next project can be. Because we’re story-driven and driven by inspiration and not by schedules and marketing, it’s going to be interesting unexplored territory.

Space (Disneytoon Studios)

Post by Sotiris »

DisneyToon Studios is making a spin-off of "Planes" tentatively titled "Space". It's being directed by Klay Hall and Bobs Gannaway.

John Lasseter came on stage, using a merch gun to whip the crowd into a frenzy, and he showed off footage from a new Disneytoon project he dubbed "the speed test."

The footage was something akin to Top Gun on steroids, with planes that go all the way into space. The planes had faces akin to those seen in the two installments of Cars spin-off Planes that hail from the Disney division, although Lasseter made no direct mention of that franchise.

After showing two planes zooming through a desert landscape, a third plane rockets down from above, showing that no matter how fast that duo was flying, it was no match for this plane.

And as that plane hurled through the stratosphere, a title card comes up reading, "SPACE." But that proved not to be the title of the film, as other words came up around it, saying that the "this SPACE will be filled with a title in the future."

The film also will be released theatrically with Lasseter revealing a debut of April 12, 2019.

The movie, directed by Clay Hall and Bobs Gannaway, “celebrates the next horizons of aviation,” said Lasseter. The directors’ research trips — a key rite of passage for Disney animated films — have brought them to NASA and well beyond and opened their eyes to the progress being made to push the furthest limits of where we can go in the world.

Lasseter debuted footage from the film in a sequence he simply called “The Speed Test.” The footage showed an arid desert in the middle of nowhere, quiet and remote — until two jet planes speed across the plains and through the canyons in a thrilling chase sequence. Near the end of the clip, they open their eyes and reveal the familiar eyes that define the Cars world. And one more surprise: What looks like a rocket flies up towards the dark sky, but turns around on the edges of the atmosphere; instead, the craft proceeds to chase down the two planes and launch a missile.

The title card revealed “Disney’s SPACE,” drawing oohs from the crowd — before the title shifted and revealed the full message, “This SPACE to be filled by a title when we think of one.”

“It is harder to think of a title than it is to get to space,” the Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Disneytoon Studios chief creative officer said about the untitled Disneytoon film, which may be a sequel to the studio’s 2013 pic “Planes.”

Lasseter then showed the audience in Anaheim, Calif., a scene of rough footage from the movie, which he called “speed test,” that showed two military planes zooming through a rocky landscape. An evil-looking third plane then swooped down from space and grazed the side of one of the planes.

Groundbreaking.

I wonder if Lasseter realizes he literally is Darth Vader at this point?

Re: Space Jets (DisneyToon Studios)

The movie was going to be called "Beyond the Sky". Disney went as far as to trademark that title. Other working titles were "Jets", "Space Jets", and "Space Mission". A couple of story reels and some storyboard panels have been released by David Scott Smith as well as concept art by Bill Perkins.

Planes 3...gone supersonic. DisneyToon Studios third and final installment of the "Planes" franchise that just wasn't made for these times.

Borys Kit wrote:Disneytoon was most recently working on a Planes spin-off, Space Jets was one of the working titles. Disney showed off stellar footage at 2017's D23 Expo that wowed but that project lost its directors months ago. And Disney quietly took it off the schedule in the spring.

Knox Robbins wrote:Rainmaker had talks with DisneyToon to work and did tests for Tinker Bell and the third Planes movie but the pipeline and rendering power weren't strong enough for Disney's expectations. The third Planes was going to be about fighter jets vs aliens as far as the test I saw told.

Brendon Connelly: A lot of talented people worked for a long time on that Planes movie at Disney Toon Studios. I think it's very sad that none of it will ever meet the public.

Q: Do you know what that Planes movie was called? Had they settled on a title?

Brendon Connelly: A long, long time ago somebody referred to Space Mission and when I asked what they were talking about, it was this film. Not convinced that was a final title, but... maybe?

Q: Wasn't there a third Planes movie in the works? I remember they announced it at the previous D23 Expo. Is that cancelled now?

Steve Hulett: The third Planes was in development, and announced for a 2019 release. At one time director Mark Dindal had been on the project, but he had departed. The studio release says the pic won't be made.

Disney took a write-off for canceling the film.
Christine McCarthy, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Walt Disney Company:

"I’d also note that we had about 100 million dollars of film impairments in the quarter primarily related to two unreleased titles—a Disneytoon Studios film and another animated project in early development."
