that last image is straight from WDFA, its a promo pic with the cast and usually the first look at what the film would look like, they would do one for every release back in the early late 80's/90's. Thats why its so good.Mooky wrote:I hate this trend of pseudo-3D imagery on the covers where line art is completely absent or almost invisible. I think that only makes it easier for characters to end up looking off-model. But as someone said earlier, Aladdin really doesn't have a good track record with home media covers, or even theatrical posters -- Genie is the only character who appears to be consistently on model and Jasmine always ends up looking the worst.
Here are several promotional posters/images that are pretty much the only ones I could find where the main characters look even half-decent.
^^ I think this image is the one they should base their home media cover art off of.

Re: Aladdin - Diamond Edition (Spring, 2013)
Really? That's very interesting, I didn't know that. Do you remember these promo pics for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, what did they look like?
Re: Aladdin - Diamond Edition (Spring, 2013)
Aladdin actually had two... the one shown here, and one of aladdin, the carpet and Abu standing on the "tail" on the genie, inside the cave.
Little Mermaid had one of Ariel, Flounder and Sebastian (S. looked like he was dancing)
BATB had Belle and the Beast holding hands, with the rose in front, in a starry sky (similar post to the original soundtrack cover)

^this is the one for Little mermaid, it was the first pic I ever saw of the film back in a Disney Channel magazine in 1989. I did it as a link cuz the pic is huuuge.
this was Beauty and the beast, remember seeing this for the first time in People magazine 1991 fall movie preview:

Lion king had several, I found this one but I cant find the first one I saw on the Disney Channel mag back in 1993/94 which was of Mufasa Sarabi and Rafiki holding up baby Simba on Pride rock with these very dark muted colors(I cant seem to find that one)
https://whitmangender.files.wordpress.c ... 24-768.jpg
EDIT: whoa I found it! its a huge pic to so Im just adding a link:
http://cdn.thedailybeast.com/content/da ... cached.jpg
tried to find the other Aladdin promo pic Marce mentioned but I cant find it so far, the funny thing about that one is that it still had the old design for Aladdin, so it must've been made really early in the films production.
ok I found the aladdin one:
https://metrouk2.files.wordpress.com/20 ... 1024&h=683
actually i was wrong, this isnt the promo pic I was thinking of. The first one I ever saw of this film was a very tiny pic with Al and Jas and the Genie and Al looked different. I think the pic may be so obscure that it will be very hard to find on the internet.
BTW for some rreaon its not letting me imbed the other pics as images on the thread, dont know why.

Thanks unprincess and Marce82.
I've actually seen those pics before but I had no idea they were of a 'first look' kind. When did this practice stop, if it has at all? Are there others for Pocahontas, Hunchback, etc.?
Either way, they beat the hell out of any promo material for these films that came out in the last 15 years or so.

Re: Aladdin - Diamond Edition (Spring, 2013)
yes Oliver and Co, Hunchback, Mulan & Hercules had at least one or a couple...I cant remember if RDU had one as I dont remember seeing any early images of it that werent just stills from the film itself, the Pocahontas one I think was the one of her head against the blue sky(same as the cover of the first soundtrack release) and her on the canoe with Meeko at the front of the boat, but I think those are stills from the film itself too. If I have time later Ill try to find some of the others...
as for when they stopped doing them, Im not sure...maybe with Tarzan as I dont recall seeing anything especially made as a promo piece, like with Poca they just started releasing stills from the film itself...I know for sure Mulan had one with her in the warrior outfit riding Kahn with the rest of the cast (the Chinese army) behind her. BTW Im referrer to the 2d films, wth the CGI films Im not sure as I didnt follow the CGI ones as much as the 2d ones.

^Im actually not sure...I dont remember her looking at her father like that, in the film isnt she hiding her face in that scene?
Mooky, yep, you must have posted right after I did. Except for the Hunchback one, that is actually just the poster artwork repositioned.
The Pocahontas one also looks like just a still from the JATR segment but Im not sure...I do know that was one of the first images released from the film...
That Lion King one I remember it being released a couple months after the film was released when it had became a monster hit...then for the rerelease during the Holidays of that year they released a second similar pic to that...
btw the reason I remember all this so well is b/c Im old.
I was a teen while the Disney renaissance was going on...And geez, I really miss traditional animation. Seeing all these gorgeous promo pics and stills from the films while searching on Google ...we really have been robbed of a great art form.

Re: Aladdin - Diamond Edition (Spring, 2013)
Haha, nah, that's not old, you were just the right age at the right time to experience it all in full detail. I was a pre-teen by the time Hunchback was released and my memories of the early renaissance are not as vivid as yours. But I agree, it's sad how things turned out for hand-drawn animation at Disney in the end.

Re: Aladdin - Diamond Edition (Spring, 2013)
yeah Im glad I was old enough to experience all that stuff back then...also i kept a scrapbook of every clipping I could find of all the animated films (past and present.) I still have it stored somewhere but I dont really work on it anymore due to lack of time(not surprisingly i stopped around the time Disney switched to CGI) CGI just isn't as special to me as hand drawn.
I found another Aladdin promo done by WDFA, like the Lion King one this one was released a short time after the film came out.

and here's another one for Hunchback
http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/defaul ... k=n113BbPq
and for Mulan

Re: Aladdin - Diamond Edition (Spring, 2013)
By the way guys... that image of Pocahontas in her canoe is an actual frame from the film... (and it was the basis for one of the release posters)
Re: Aladdin - Diamond Edition (Spring, 2013)
that last Aladdin one is very similar to one of the lithographs that come with the DisneyStore pre-order. A lithograph set which I think is an eyesore. Except in the set, it's redrawn and Aladdin has more prominent female lips and a huge eye brow.
As for these promo images. My favorite will forever the Beauty and the Beast one. It's just so beautiful and true to the movie. It's perfect and I wish disney would use it on more products, especially blu-ray covers. Hot Topic used it once on a throw and it looked really nice.
I got really tired complaining about the cover art for these blu-rays. I'll just accept it for what it is, at least we're getting the movies in HD.

Here's the lithograph set so you guys can see whether or not you actually think its a eyesore (I don't). I don't care for the lips either though in the second one. Isn't it sad we're criticizing lips in a image? Anyone think we jumped the shark yet?

Damn.... the shading in those lithographs is pretty bad...
Also, I went to the El Capitan theater on saturday, and they have advertising for their showing of Aladdin (limited engagement)... and they are using that hideous artwork from the upcoming cover of the blu ray as advertising. I guess its official... sigh

Okay, the silver frame aside, am I the only one who quite likes the Aladdin cover art? I know the characters could be a bit more on-model but it still looks better than the Platinum Edition cover...

I'm okay with it. I'm also not a fan of the oval, but the silver at least looks a lot less tacky than the gold.Wonderlicious wrote:Okay, the silver frame aside, am I the only one who quite likes the Aladdin cover art? As for the character art, it really isn't bad compared to past home media releases. It doesn't really look "right," but to me it kinda comes off as stylized rather than simply being badly drawn/off-model as in the past. Whatever the case, the Diamond Line has had worse covers, that's for sure.
Re: Aladdin - Diamond Edition (Spring, 2013)
Stylized??? No no... this is meant to be the Disney House style.

I don't like those lithographs - yak. Looks infantile.
This film was just over 20 years ago - Disney, you have artists that worked on this film still alive. You probably have loads of old sketches that would make bea-u-tiful lithographs.
