And the Tony people aren't snubbing it when it loses Best Musical. Gentleman is the only original musical that is nominated and Beautiful is very very successful right now. At least, it isn't going to be BS like last year.

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
Patrick, the only guaranteed Tony that Aladdin has is Best Featured Actor (James Monroe Iglehart). As for the others: Fat chance! And I'm sad to say that includes Best Score. Bridges is supposed to have that one.

(I'll never get over Matilda losing Best Score to some has-been rock star.
)

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
As much as I don't blame you, that I also want to see Aladdin win for Best Musical, but sadly it may not happen. But least it'll get one Tony. I haven't seen Gentlemen's Guide, but I got the cast recording of it on itunes and it really sounds like a fun musical. Better than Passion, Spring Awakening and Once. And I'm still upset that Newsies lost a Tony for Best Musical. Speaking of which, there is one thing I might be upset about on this year's Tony Awards is seeing that horrible rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch win for Best Musical Revival.PatrickvD wrote:So, will Aladdin take anything home at the Tony's tonight?
It would be a crime if it lost best music. Is there really anything with better music this season on Broadway? And Iglehart has a legitimate shot I think. Other than that, I think Broadway will continue to snub Disney, even though this production is probably lightyears ahead of Tarzan and Mermaid. Then again, Newsies got some love last year... and Aladdin is doing incredibly well with audiences.
That and Aladdin was born for Broadway. Can't wait to see what songs they'll perform during the show. My money would be on Friend Like Me.
P.S. Alan Menken already got a Tony for Newsies.

Cast selfie from earlier today before the dress rehearsal!
I'm hoping that they do a medley like Beauty and the Beast did way back when, that way they could showcase Friend Like Me without doing the whole big number, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm thinking they might do Arabian Nights or maybe Prince Ali again.
Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
Well, according to Broadwayworld.com, they're going to A Friend Like Me as popular demand.rubyslippers wrote:

The Aladdin number and the Wicked tribute are the 2 things I'm most excited to see on the Tony's and Friend Like Me makes sense as it's a great number.
Favorite Animated Disney films: 1. Dumbo, 2. Tangled, 3. Frozen, 4. Beauty and The Best, 5. The Little Mermaid, 6. Cinderella
Favorite Princesses, 1. Rapunzel, 2. Ariel, 3. Sofia, 4.Elsa, 5. Belle, 6. Cinderella/Anna

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
Judging by the set pieces that can be glimpsed in some of the rehearsal shots the cast have posted on Twitter it'll be Friend Like Me they're performing (and that matches with who we're seeing in costume and the costumes in the pictures as well). Win or lose the Tony's is essentially a free advert for the show, they've shown Arabian Nights and Prince Ali before, if they were saving Friend Like Me for something special then this is it. That number is a show seller, even if the show doesn't get Best Musical they could still win the night (in terms of popularity and publicity) if that number is even half as good as it is live.
Honest predictions JMI will take Best Supporting (USA Today says he's the safest bet this year), I'd love the show to win Best Musical, but looking at previous awards this season I think that'll go to Gentleman's Guide, same for Book (USA Today also gives both to Gentlemen but lists Aladdin as the one they feel should win)
I'd love it to get Best Music (especially as it would be a nice nod to Howard Ashman) but apparently the smart money is on Bridges (though again USA Today lists Aladdin as one of the ones it thinks should win).
Personally I think it deserves choreography as well. The ensemble's energy and Nicholaw's choreography really help make this show what it is and think maybe (just maybe) it has a shot at taking this.

If I may , I'd like to use Wicked, my favorite musical as an example for something. Ten years ago, when Wicked was nominated for Best Musical, it didn't that night and instead, the award went to Ave. Q but that didn't stop Wicked from becoming one of the most successful musicals of all time with legions of fans that love the music and the characters and I feel that even though, Aladdin may not win, word of mouth is strong enough on the show that it may garner plenty of fans in the future and that is just as good.

What a fabulous performance of Friend Like Me!
And James won his Tony Award!!! I'm so so happy for him, absolutely deserved.

Also: this is the first time that a Disney show has won a Tony for an acting award!

Funny, I was thinking that'd be the scene where Twilight jumps up and down shouting "Yes"TsWade2 wrote:And here is my reaction to that.rubyslippers wrote:What a fabulous performance of Friend Like Me!

For the Tony's, I think "A whole new world" was better option.
It's the iconic song and it's shorter.
I like "Friend like me" but the whole sequence, not this "Tony version"

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
I doubt they would have been able to install the right rigging for A Whole New World to be able to perform it, though. To say nothing of them probably not wanting to show the special effects in high definition! Though they could have always done something similar to what Cinderella did last year, where they developed a unique costume transformation for the Tony performance that wasn't the same one used in the show.mariadny wrote:For the Tony's, I think "A whole new world" was better option.

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
Of course Friend Like Me would be the performance since he was the only frontrunner to win anything.
He deserved the win. So much charisma, and he carried an otherwise lackluster and mediocre show on his shoulders.
