The Nintendo Wii is officially done

Post by disneyboy20022 »

Nintendo officially shuts down Wii console production
http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in ... 30255.html
After seven years and over 100 million units sold, Nintendo has said a quiet goodbye to the Wii.

Nintendo Japan made the news official today with a short statement on the system's product page that read simply "production over." It marked a particularly subdued ending for a console that had such a dramatic impact on the gaming world.

Prior to its formal debut as the Wii in 2006, Nintendo used the codename "Revolution." No one had any idea how descriptive that term would prove to be. While core gamers may mock it today as being too focused on a mainstream audience, the Wii was something we see all too rarely from console makers: an innovative risk.

Without the Wii, there would be no Kinect or PlayStation Move. Without the Wii, game publishers might still be exclusively chasing the core gaming market, throwing nothing but cheap shovelware at the mainstream audience. And without the Wii, there's no telling where Nintendo would be today.

Rather than focusing on a generational graphical leap, Nintendo opted to re-imagine basic gameplay elements through the lens of the system's then-revolutionary motion controls. The strategy worked with not only gamers, but with their parents and grandparents as well. It proved so immediately successful that it was still hard to find a Wii store shelves the holiday season after it launched.

Nintendo predicted all of this before the system was released, though no one believed them.

"Until now, within a single household, we've had family members who play video games and family members who don't play video games - and they've been very separate," said president Satoru Iwata in 2005. "Gradually, the barriers between those two have gotten stronger. ... Today, if you don't understand the controller, you're not able to enjoy video games. ... We expect [the Revolution controller] to become the standard in video game controls."

It never went quite that far, but it did force Microsoft and Sony to alter their game plan.

Of course, the shine soon faded for the Wii. A few years after its launch, third-party publishers began realizing that gamers were largely only interested in games made by Nintendo and began to back away from the system. The lack of HD graphics began to catch up with the company the longer the generation wore on. Eventually the Wii would find itself outsold by the Xbox 360 and PS3 on monthly sales charts, and by 2011, the biggest games of the year weren't even making a Wii port.

These days, it's the Wii U that Nintendo wants to focus on. And while that system hasn't lived up to its predecessor's success in any measurable way -- it's been a rough ride, to say the least -- the Wii U enjoyed a respite from the doom and gloom with an uptick in sales in September. It's got a long way to go to recapture the magic of its forbear, however.
I wonder if the virtual store will still be around

That's a rather shortish production run. Can't believe the PS2 went out of production only last year. That one lasted 12 years.

Sad news about the Wii; I had one for about a year, until it was stolen a few months ago. :(

The longest lifespan for a Nintendo console so far has been the NES, which had its last official game produced in 2003, for the Japanese market. That's a period of 18 years, since the system's trial run in Christmas of 1985.

The motion controls were okay, but I still prefer a standard gamepad any day. The most recent non-Nintendo system I ever owned was the PS1; never went beyond that. Prices are so huge now, that I usually don't wind up purchasing any system until the end of its original run. I bought the Wii used for $110, along with "Twilight Princess" and "Super Mario Galaxy"; the latter was much better.

That's incredible! Do you know the name of the game, so I can look it up for curiousity's sake?

You mentioned that you had a PSone. Do you remember it fondly or are you indifferent? Personally I feel very nostalgic for the first PlayStation, even if it looked just like a clunky grey box. There were some really good games for it.

Sorry, I don't remember. I read about it in an article a few months back.

I was never a diehard PlayStation fanatic; the only games I got heavily into were "Mortal Kombat Trilogy", "Resident Evil 3: Nemesis", and "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night".

I didn't own an NES (long before my time) but the last official game for it was Wario's Woods (according to Wikipedia). There have been numerous homebrews and hacks after that, but they don't really count.

It's amazing that it's already been seven years since the Wii came out. I still remember how big of a deal it was when it first came out (as a lot of us probably do). It was sold out for over a year or so and many people had to get rain checks or wake up very early to claim one. I ordered mine online as a bundle (though it's now gathering dust as I rarely play it  ).

"Wario's Woods" was the last official game for the NES in the United States, but the Famicom had exclusive titles developed for it until 2003.

Christmas 2006 had some very nice memories when I got it when I was 13. I'm glad that the Wii lasted while it did.

Nostalgic for what though? 2006? that wasn't that long ago. Have they never been through a console cycle before? Nothing has been lost. I get being nostalgic for the snes, n64, etc but not something as recent as the wii. The wii U still supports the same controller, plays the same games, and even has sequels to those same games.

The only thing I miss from then was our economy.

I can't exactly say I'm sad to see production has been shut down because of the Wii U's existence, but hopefully this doesn't mean they will be shutting down servers for it anytime soon. I still have yet to buy a Wii U. Then again, I still own my SNES and play on that more than the Wii, so maybe the online store shutting down won't be too bothersome.

Wow, it did not seem so long when it first came out. Oh well, it will become a collector's item, like all the other game systems before it. Which means, I can get it for cheap someday on Ebay, like I did with Super Nintendo. :)

I still enjoy playing NES, even more so than Super NES.

Well I suppose not, unless you're that young. I cant speak for moviefan2k4 though.

The only thing sad for me is that it never fully lived up to its potential.

Never even had a NES or SNES. Had an N64, and with so many old games for digital download now, dont really need the hardware.

Nintendo killing Wi-Fi Connection service for DS and Wii May 20 (update)
http://www.polygon.com/2014/2/26/545211 ... nd-wii-may

Nintendo is shutting down the Wi-Fi Connection service for DS and Wii on May 20, Nintendo of Japan announced today.

While Nintendo DS/DSi and Wii users will no longer be able to access online features such as online play, matchmaking and leaderboards from the announced date, according to a Nintendo of Australia press release, the Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi Shop will not be affected. Browsers for the DS and DSi will also be accessible beyond the date, as well as the Wii's Delivery Channel, Hulu, Internet Channel and YouTube.

The service's retirement will affect 20 Nintendo published Wii games and Wii Ware titles, including Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and Pokémon Battle Revolution. More than 40 Nintendo published DS and DSi software titles will also be affected, such as Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Pokémon Platinum Version, Professor Layton and the Curious Village and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. The full list of titles are available on the official Nintendo of Australia website.

We have reached out to Nintendo to confirm if the Wi-Fi Connection service termination is worldwide.

Update: "This is a global termination which will take place on 20th May 2014 Worldwide," a Nintendo spokesperson told Polygon.

Update 2: Nintendo issued Polygon the following statement:

As of May 20, 2014, certain online functionality, including online play, matchmaking and leaderboards for many Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games, will no longer be accessible. For a list of Nintendo games and services that are affected, please check http://www.nintendo.com. Users can still play these games in offline mode, which continues to offer a rich game-play experience. Other online functionality on Wii and Nintendo DS, such as access to the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo DSi Shop and video-on-demand services, are also not affected at this time.

Online play for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games will be unaffected (aside from the Wii mode on Wii U and Nintendo DS games played on Nintendo 3DS family systems). Our focus now shifts to readying our Wii U and Nintendo 3DS matchmaking services for upcoming games such as Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros.

We at Nintendo sincerely thank our fans for their continued support of our company's legacy systems. Your enthusiasm for games made for these systems speaks to their longevity, and the passion of Nintendo fans.
