It's been years since I watched it, but the 2006 DVD documentary "Treasures Untold: The Making of The Little Mermaid" will be on the Blu-Ray, so I don't know how that constitutes Disney unable to give us a "true" making-of documentary. Granted, what I remember of the documentary wasn't very positive (I had criticized it in the past for being a refresher of general knowledge rather than a deeply-intensive look at the making of the film), but it's better than nothing.

But in case that's not enough, we've also got The Disney Channel's "The Making of The Little Mermaid," hosted by Alyssa Milano and originally broadcast in 1989.

Another documentary was later made for the 1998 CAV LaserDisc and VHS ("Under the Sea: The Making of Disney's Masterpiece The Little Mermaid"), but it is not available online (as far as I could tell).

*googles* 0_0 You weren't kidding. And we bless Tom Hooper and the crew for not doing so! (P.S.: Love the new film adaptation!)

Oh yeah, that doc. ... what is it with companies not releasing nearly every doc that was made on disc? I understand if there are legal rights, but other than that... laziness.

I do not think that was on the VHS, since I somehow still have the VHS. ... we should ask someone that owns the 1998 laserdisc online to see if they can process and present that doc.

Tobe Hooper directed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Tom Hooper directed Les Misérables.

Yeah, that was a typo on my part. I was typing on auto-pilot and assumed it was included on the VHS, since other re-releases of the time (Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, and I think The Jungle Book) had included their then-new LD documentaries on the VHS.

Yeah, I actually did change that 2 minutes after posting (looks like you're replying to the earlier edit). Didn't realize that I thought of the name Tobe Hooper, rather than Tom Hooper! (and yes, I am aware that Tobe Hooper would direct Horror films.) Good Lord, what a strange mix-up! (it's the first 2 letters "To" and last name "Hooper" that threw me off!)

This I don't get. Strange that Disney didn't include that doc on the VHS in the first place. They had room on the tape! Wouldn't be that big of a problem!

Thanks Escapay.

Unbelievable that Disney just doesn´t include these things on their releases.

This gave me the idea that Disney could had very well include everything they have done prior to DVD plus add (if only) a single new Behind the Scenes/Making Of with new material. And every time they released the movie in a new version/format repeat.

Not only would customers get everything but also it would mean very little effort from Disney: just keep porting stuff and add a new single thing each time.

I'd like to see Les Miserable Chainsaw Massacre.

Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried getting hacked up by Leather Face? Yes please.

Hey, since we're talking about The Little Mermaid, does anybody here know of this book of said story? The one I'm thinking of follows the original Hans Christian Anderson story (down to the Daughters of the Air ending), but has illustrations done in the style of Sailor Moon.

I'm not joking, even the titular mermaid looked exactly like Serena/Usagi/Sailor Moon. I remember seeing it at Target sometime back in the 90s.

So... Anyone have a hunch?

That sounds like it might be from Shogo Hirata's series of fairy tale books. In the early-to-mid 90s, he illustrated fairy fairy tale adaptations for Honey Bear books. I had his Aladdin and Cinderella ones, and from what I remember of them, they were reasonably faithful (Aladdin had two genies and the villain who pretended to be his uncle, Cinderella started off with her being called Ella). His Snow White one looks super familiar to me, so I may have had that one, too. I was only able to find two images of his Little Mermaid one: a fuzzy one of the American edition, and a clearer one of the Japanese edition:

I'm not sure if that's what you saw as a kid, but at least you gave me an excuse to tap into an aspect of my childhood I hadn't thought about in years. ;)

I just watched the blu ray and although I'm only half way through, I just had to point out a few things.

1. The "Walt Disney Pictures Presents" always appeared when we see those corals or whatever but now it's when we see the little fish from afar swimming away from the ship.

2. After the shark scene, when we see Ariel and Flounder swimming up to see Scuttle, it used to fade into the very first image of Scuttle, but now it just cuts to him without fading out.

And, brace yourselves for the next one...

Remember when Ariel reaches her hand out at the end of Part of Your World? Then we see her from afar under a beam of light, and then we see Flounder sighing... Now it's the other way around. We first see Flounder and then Ariel is under the light. And it looks awfully weird because then it cuts right to Ariel sitting on the rock singing the last "...world".

Seems like they put it in the wrong order :milkbuds:

... CRAP. Mainly the 3rd change. Can't imagine how that would feel once I actually see this. ... I'm not sure if I should wait till the price decreases to under $20 so that I wouldn't fully feel chipped.

The first 2 seem to be deliberate choices. The 3rd is surely a mistake.

If that third change sticks for the US release, I ain't buying this. I'll skip right over it like I did the lion King. There's no excuse for these kind of mistakes, intentional or not.

Yet another mistake to add to their ever growing list of problems that need fixing :smack: get your ish together Disney!

Why have they even made these changes anyway? They aren't necessary! It would actually be refreshing for them to leave things alone without tampering with them for once... And just when I thought this release would be a step in the right direction for them as well, what with it's promising new restoration.
