We don't. We're just assuming because Cinderella got the new look in the parks and since the 3D re-release and Diamond edition for The Little Mermaid is coming up, it is plausible they'll do the same for Arial.

I could be wrong, but I believe I've heard that Ariel has already been updated for Disneyland. Not yet at Disney World, but I believe she's now in that green dress in California.

I find the updated looks in the parks more disturbing than the merchandise. Aren't the characters in the parks supposed to resemble how they look in the movies as closely as possible?

Basing their outfits on vapid merchandise clip-art is a massive step backwards for the authenticity of Disneyland.

Ariel is indeed greeting guests at her grotto at Magic Kingdom.

At first I was definitely opposed to the idea of changing the characters costumes in the parks, but after seeing a couple of them in person I have to say I think they look really nice. I think the idea to give them an update came first from a parks viewpoint, and then those designs were translated into the clip art we're seeing. Unfortunately, the designs aren't translating as well, largely due to the fact that most of the clip art is very poorly drawn.

I'd say it's more due to the fact that most of the ideas are very poor. Maybe they should get people who design characters in films to come up with some new designs for them, rather than the merchandising department.

Personally, I don't give a damn if parks give princess characters new outfits and stylize hairdo. The park gives Prince Phillip some top hat with a feather in it when he never even wore any hat to begin with in the film nor is it even in any merchandise/clipart either.

Hat is with the wrong outfit. In the parks, He wears the one Philip wears at end of the film. That one didn't have any hat on.

Again I don't really care enough at this point.

Definitely agree that character designers from the studio ought to have a hand in this.

But why do you doubt that the initial idea stemmed from the parks? Every so often they do continually update the characters in the parks - just look at pictures of the parks from the 90s - and recently the older princesses were becoming noticeably less extravagant than the newer costumes. Tiana and Rapunzel's costumes are much more elaborate than Cinderella or Snow White's previous/current costumes, but not so with the updated versions.

I guess it doesn't necessarily have to come from one department or the other, it could simply have been a joint effort since the beginning. But I certainly think the parks were at least more than an afterthought.

I love the new Cinderella dress at the theme parks. Thank GOD they finally changed it to silver. Hopefully next they'll fix Snow White's sleeves and after that Prince Philip's hat.

Actually, Philip's entire costume is dreadful now that I think about it. They should really put him in the outfit that he wears throughout the majority of the film.

They should look as they do in the films. From Cinderella's dress color to it's whole design to Snow White's sleeves to Philip's hat to Ariel's human dress to the castles and Cinderella's coach, everything should look as it did in the films.
