Russell Means (1939-2012)

Post by Disneyphile »

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Russell Means never shunned attention. Whether leading Native Americans in railing against broken federal treaties, appearing in a Hollywood blockbuster or advocating a sovereign American Indian nation within U.S. borders, the activist who helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee reveled in the spotlight.

But it was only on his terms. Openly critical of mainstream media, the onetime leader of the American Indian Movement often refused interviews and verbally blasted journalists who showed up to cover his public appearances. Instead, he chose to speak to his fan base through YouTube videos and blog posts on his personal website.

The voice of Chief Powhatan died man that sucks.I mean last year we lost of the voice of King Tritain and now Russel Means is dead. Its like the voices of our favorite father characters are dying each year one after another.Yeah, but I heard he got involved with Pocahntas because he wanted to be in a movie that promoted Native American awareness.Russel Means R.I.P. because you have forever remained in our minds Cheif Powhatan.

R.I.P. Mr. Means

I've always loved this quote from "Pocahontas" spoken by him.

"...But she is still with us. Whenever the wind moves through the trees. I feel her presence."

Since losing my sister to cancer earlier this year, it's come to mean much more than before.
