I hope Basil gets a U.K. release too. Like Winnie The Pooh, I have a feeling the less profitable Classics like Treasure Planet and Home On The Range won't get released here on Blu-Ray.

Hey, my birthday. Maybe I can actually get this now.
What coincidence, mine too! This Blu-ray can be a release from me to me. ;)

Post by msh1975 »

disney has recalled / delayed the great mouse detective and arachnophobia due to encoding issues on the blu-ray discs. new street date for arachnophobia is now september 25, 2012 and great mouse detective is now october 9, 2012.

I don't think they were going to really ship any copies out on street date anyway, cept to a few places. This had ZERO marketing, so if one wants it before the stores stock up on catalog titles for the Holidays, they'll need to order it online or get lucky (ala Home on the Range/Treasure Planet) most likely.

I'm not sure if this is the case everywhere but my Best Buy had "The Great Mouse Detective" already on the shelves when I stopped by today. With the Upgrade and Save promotion they have going on, I paid a little over $15 for it, which is about the right price for this. I haven't checked it out yet, but hopefully the transfer is solid. If I remember correctly, the most recent DVD had a new restoration so I would hope this would just use that.

Since the most recent restoration is only 2 years old I'm assuming they'll just use that. It was a pretty good restoration so I expect no issues from this release.

My blu has been sitting on my shelf unopened for 2 weeks.

and it's one of my faves too

but yes, reviews from other aussies suggest there is nothing to complain about, albeit slight softness (perhaps compared to the ultra sharp early DVD release) which might make Marky happy :)

Been busy with school.

...and I am slightly apprehensive that I won't like it on a repeat viewing. I had a great time the first time, so it's sort of like "quitting while I'm ahead". It's like Tarzan, I loved it in first viewing, but I can't stand it now that there's nothing to distract me from noticing the annoying sidekicks. But it's probably less a concern with Basil.

It's pretty pathetic. They delay the release from the 18th of Sept. to the 9th of Oct. and don't even take that time to try and promote it AT ALL? It wasn't advertised at all. On top of that, no coupon, nothing. Not even an upgrade, enter your UPC from the previous DVD to get the coupon type deal. :x

And Disney wonders why nobody has heard of this fucking movie?

I agree, looks like they took the Treasure Planet/Home on the Range route with this one as well. One wouldn't even know this movie was coming out, especially after it being delayed, unless you're a fan of the movie, a Disney fan, etc. I don't get it, this movie deserves better.

And to pour more salt on the wound, even though it's a separate gripe, my order from Amazon hasn't even shipped yet, and I'm supposed to get it tomorrow for release day (with my Amazon Prime free trial) :x

the sidekicks arent really bad at all for me(they coulda been mushu replicas for all I care) and I still like Tarzan a lot.

I'm certain GMD will be great to watch again. :)

With regards to advertising, are we really as surprised as we all sound here? I mean, Disney's been like this for years. they just dont think it's worth it. In fact, even Cinderella barely gets anything more than a trailer come to think of it.

Of course, the real sad thing is, i've actually expected this lack of advertising from Disney.

Are you kidding? Cinderella got a TON of press. Everywhere I looked, --Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Toys R Us-- had HUGE displays advertising it in advance, starting around late August. The trailers were playing for it on every channel during every commercial break, booklets, merchandise, dolls, plushes, jewelry, dresses, costumes, etc. Cinderella got a HUGE push. But GMD doesn't even get a trailer or an ad in a booklet? That's not even mentioning the lack of merchandise for the film at all. (You're telling me Disney, the richest, most greedy corporate entity on the planet, they couldn't even give us fans of the film a crappy little PVC figurine set? Or an exclusive 'buy the blu-ray and receive a finger-puppet' or anything of the sort?) Same goes for Pocahontas, The Rescuers movies, the Aristocats, Treasure Planet.

All DACs are not created equal, it seems.

^Okay, yeah, the displays and Princess merchandise. I forgot, but what about the web and TV where most things get advertised? that's pretty much the extent of advertising the shit out of a lot of things.

Most Best Buys seem like they'll have it in stock tomorrow. While there's no coupon, per se, if you trade in any old DVD in its original case, you can get a $5 coupon which will bring the price to a more reasonable $14.99.

^Are all Best Buys nation-wide doing that deal? I know our local Best Buy was doing it a few months ago. I used it as a chance to get Dangerous Liaisons and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker on blu-ray. It's great if they're doing it again, it'll provide a great opportunity to pick up GMD. Maybe even the blu-ray of Little Shop of Horrors, which is also due out tomorrow. :D
