Another thing I find really weird about the Roy mention in the book, is that one of Disney's well-known heroines got pregnant out of wedlock - Lady. As mentioned in the DVD, it's pretty well suggested by their position and Trusty and Jock proposing to her as she's in a "delicate position" and then later has puppies at the very end. I suppose since they're animals one could argue it might not count, but still that includes one Disney heroine.
And let's not forget Roger's little entrende joke, when he see the new other 99 puppies, "Why Pongo, you old rascal you!"

^^^ Not too mention in The Emperor's New Groove, a film that came out not long after Fantasia 2000, Pacha's wife is very heavily pregnant, something not seen in an animated Disney film before. If you were to look back over the history of Disney you would probably find several examples that contradict what Roy said but my thinking is that he was so particular as he was responsible for the continuation of one of Walt's most personal projects, Fantasia. Roy was as headstrong on other matters; for example, according to the same book, when the home video market began to become more lucrative and successful, he refused point-blank to allow Disney to release Snow White, Fantasia and Cinderella, apparently not wanting them to be too accessible to the public, though he obviously eventually relented on this. On reflection, these things might not make much sense but I think Roy always had what he thought were the best interests of Disney at heart.

This segment was shown again at the Destination D event on August 11. I wish someone would upload it online so the rest of us could finally watch it. Here's the account of someone who saw it there.

Source: http://d-princesses.livejournal.com/136 ... #t15787896Dated 1994, this was just after ALADDIN was released. The storyboards begin with a storybook opening up and all 6 princesses' castles are there. There's Forbidden Mountain at the far end of the book, and in the middle on the spine is a grand castle spire. Panning down the spire, Peter Pan, Wendy & Tinker Bell arrive at the bottom and stand with Baloo (I think). The White Rabbit runs in trumpeting the procession, and EVERY DISNEY CHARACTER TO DATE is waiting along the aisle to was the ceremony, with brief one-second cameos to catch them all - not even kidding, I saw Bongo and Mr. Toad and the Reluctant Dragon.
Arriving up the steps to the castle are Snow White & her Prince, Cinderella & Prince Charming, Aurora & Phillip, Belle & Adam, Ariel & Eric, and Jasmine & Aladdin (Jasmine is wearing the long purple gown we often see on merchandise!) Genie is selling merchandise and treats like at a baseball game.
The White Rabbit trumpets the big minor key refrain, and the castle spire doors open to show Donald pulling on his pants. Several characters look at him in shock, and the Fairy Godmother closes her eyes and magics him into a very fancy outfit. Donald walks down the steps bearing a pillow with 6 small crowns on it, but he's very nervous. Daisy blows him a kiss that gives him strength, and he proudly marched down the aisle. Daisy faints from love and Huey, Dewey & Louie catch her.
While passing some more characters, the Queen Of Hearts notices the crowns and sees that her crown is tiny and not as fancy. She glares fire at Donald and melts her crown. Whispering to her card guards, she traps Donald and tries to take the crowns. Donald runs for it, being chased out to Forbidden Mountain by the Queen and her cards. She is then surrounded by all the Disney Villains, including Hook, Kaa, the Headless Horseman, Jafar, and Maleficent.
Meanwhile, back at the castle spire, Dumbo and a heard of storks are flying down bearing wrapped bundles. Each princess raises her arms to receive a bundle. Magic Carpet notices Donald isn't there to present the crowns, and he sees fire being blown from Forbidden Mountain. He flies over to the Mountain, slaps Maleficent-Dragon in the face, and takes Donald back to the castle while the Dragon breathes fire at them.
Finally back at the spire, Donald presents each baby with a crown. We see (I think) Aurora's baby, who is blonde, and Belle's baby, who is swaddled so I have no clue what it is or what hair it has. When Donald reaches Snow White at the end, she kneels down and shows Donald she has twins, but Donald only has one crown left. Flora, Fauna & Merryweather create a new crown for one of the babies, and Donald gives the remaining one on the pillow to the other. Bernard & Bianca ring the castle bells, B'rer Bear & B'rer Fox start crying, and everyone is applauding. The camera zooms back and the book closes.

I'd like to watch the video whenever it's posted on the web as silly as the video sounds. When I first read this thread last year, I did not think the children would be babies. I thought they'd be five or six years old. The mental image of Magic Carpet slapping Maleficent-Dragon is pretty funny. The daredevil.

Well, one of Disney's most popular rides at their theme parks is Splash Mountain - a log flume attraction based on the Brer Rabbit segments from Song of the South. When you go to the parks, you'll also find tons of merchandise in the store by the attraction's exit, such as t-shirts, hats, and toys featuring Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear, not to mention plushies of Brer Rabbit - all of which sell pretty good. So Disney has no problem marketing Brer Rabbit like crazy - it's the Uncle Remus live action segments that garner so much controversy from others.Tristy wrote:Wait. They actually almost had Bre'r Rabbit in there? Even then they refused to release Song of the South on VHS but they could show Bre'r Rabbit in there?...

But the marketing of those characters would make people curious about the movie they come from, which is what Disney would not like.
Anyway, I really would like to see this video. It doesn't sound as corny to me as you all had me fear. And even if it is corny, how can I not be excited about seeing all the princesses children and some of their happily ever after in feature animation, with so many characters and villains interacting with ecah other?!

Speaking of paradoxes, the whole thing that confuses and I find cringingly corny is the delivering of the babies from the storks in this segment. Yes, Dumbo was delievered by a stork in his film, but every subsequent Disney film hints or shows natural childbirth. Jim Dear and Darling in Lady and the Tramp, Pongo and Perdita, and the biggest one came later in the Emperor's New Groove in which we see Chicha pregnant, as well as Rapunzel's parents. So if other adult humans in the Disneyverse have children by sex, how come the princesses reproduce via stork? I guess we're supposed to believe that they're some kind of holy untouched virgins who give birth through immaculate conception?

Erm, yeah, probably that.PrincePhillipFan wrote:I guess we're supposed to believe that they're some kind of holy untouched virgins who give birth through immaculate conception?

Anyhow, while this concept does indeed sound a bit too self-indulgent (ESPECIALLY the baby thing), it does sound fairly fun for a Disney nerd. I agree that it didn't belong in Fantasia 2000, though.
As for the presence of characters from Song of the South; as others have mentioned, it really is just the live-action segments that worry Disney the most (along with the connotations of the "Tar Baby" segment). It was also available on video in various countries at that time, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Disney company kept toying with releasing it in the USA in some form or another as well. Needless to say, "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" arguably remains one of the more famous Disney songs, and Splash Mountain remains a very popular ride.

I think it would actually be a fine idea if they had used this idea for a theme park show, similar to Mickey's Philharmagic. The theme park shows blend the different characters all the time, such as Dream Along with Mickey, Cinderellabration, and Philharmagic. A lot of the charm in these type of shows at the parks is seeing all your favorite characters together in person. But as a Fantasia segment, I think it would feel too commercial for such a type of movie.DisneyDude2010 wrote:The clip in my opinion would work better as a Theme Park Celebration or an updated version of Mickey's Philharmagic, I'd find it perfectly plausible if that ever happened
The big issue for me I would mostly change is the whole stork thing. I would rather see the royal couples arrive with their babies at the ceremony to have them crowned, rather than have the storks deliver them.
