Absurdly Specific Things That You Like In The Animated Films

I wouldn't say this is stuff that other people wouldn't notice, but...

Shere Khan picking Kaa's nose.

Alice krinkling her nose and doing the "come here" thing with her finger to the flamingo.

Ariel's legs and feet when she's checking them out for the first time in the surf, and Tink's bottom shaking in the keyhole. Actually, a lot of scenes with those two, including facial expression scenes.

Rapunzel's bare feet. (I do NOT have a foot fetish, I think most are ugly, but when they're small and not veiny, and just downright cute, THAT I notice, ha). Also, her adorable and very realistic (considering her voice) front teeth.

The McLeach/Joanna "Did you take one of my eggs?" routine. Priceless. Haven't seen that in a while, actually, ha. My recently late father used to love that scene/movie, and he was not a man who liked many "cartoons".

Our brief glimpses of Tarzan's super hot mom.

Whenever Pooh eats honey, especially LOTS of honey. It doesn't seem at all like real honey, but puts me in mind more of eating cake batter, and whenever I'm baking a cake and "licking the bowl", I feel just like Pooh eating honey. Even though I can only take actual honey in small doses, it looks so yummy and cake batter like when he's gorging on it, I can get envious watching, ha.

Oh, oh, I gotta mention this, even though I was just about to give up and say, "There are too many, and I gotta get to bed." The scene in the new "Winnie the Pooh" in which Pooh thinks Owl sneezed, Owl denies it, and Pooh looks to Eeyore to back him up. Eeyore says, "Yeah, ya did, Owl." That is just hilarious to me! God! I LOVE the way he did that line.

Anyways, I could probably come up with something from every movie, though a lot of it might be pretty widely loved anyway, and I AM late for bed tonight.

ahhh, i love that bit with mcleach and joanna too. never fails to leave me in fits.

i like in lilo and stitch when stitch is fighting gantu, he ends up on the road with a frog next to him. he wakes up in time to see a truck about the run them over and saves the frog while rolling out of the way.

and this is doesnt really fit, but it kinda does, the lion king broadway soundtrack. i love in shadowlands, the lyrics match up to the orchastral part after the rains have quenched the fires and just before simba climbs pride rock. i love that they took an instrumental piece and gave it words. it was a section i always loved, but to have lyrics makes it even better.

Basil's voice in The Great Mouse Detective. Absolutely perfect.

The palette in Pocahontas. I get lost in those colors (and the overall design, actually).

The scene in The Fox and the Hound when Amos watches Widow Tweed drive off to the game preserve. The slight wind and muted colors depict the calm before the storm and always stood out to me as a powerful moment. And the moment soon after in Tweed's song when she says the line, "and now I find we're both alone." That always, always gets to me.

Mrs. Jumbo playing with Dumbo during and immediately after his bath. Just love the playful animation here and the way the music adds to it.

The flamboyant bit of animation when Scar sings the line, "be prepared for sensational news!" I always want to act out that moment right along with him.

The expression on Rapunzel's face during the line, "I'll paint the walls some more . . ." Her teeth (of all things!) are so cute.

The palette in The Princess and the Frog. Such gorgeous colors throughout the film, and the shading effects they can do with Toon Boom now look great too.

Lady crying when she's left in the kitchen as a little puppy. I had no idea how realistic the scene was until I got a puppy of my own. Seems so much funnier now that I can relate to poor Jim Dear attempting to deal with it.

The quick cutting and emotional impact of the sequence in which Cinderella's dress is torn apart by her stepsisters. It's easy to understand why she's lost hope.

Lilo telling Stitch he can leave, but that she'll remember him . . . because she remembers everyone that leaves. Plus the scene immediately after when Stitch is calling out that he's lost like he saw in the Ugly Duckling book, hoping to find the family he belongs to. That's the heart of the entire film.

The entire sequence of Ariel singing, "Part of Your World." The animation, the colors, the expression, the music . . . it's just the epitome of everything I've always loved about Disney animation.

OMG YES!!!!! Bambi's choral music is I think also used throughout the whole film, it's one of the reasons I love it.

It's absolutely wonderful. Especially in the French dub.

Aladdin on the balcony with Jasmine - there's some great characterisation here, with Aladdin casually introducing himself, then deepening his voice and saying "Prince Ali Ababwa"; however, when Jasmine is defiant, he shows endearing vulnerability ("Jasmine, I'm sorry-"). Aladdin's animation puts this depth across so well, and I love the confident pose he strikes.

Same for me. But I'm talking about his Dutch voice. The actor nailed that perfectly. And the part in the Dutch end credits where Basil, Dawson and Olivia sing "Goodbye, So Soon". Is not in the original version.

I just love that expression when she looks up. That's so typically 'Disney'. You know what I mean? Even though it's done in CGI, Disney proved it can still distinguish itself from its competitors. Their CGI films all look the same to me; but Rapunzel stands out because of animation like that.

Same here. I like how halfway through the song his voice changes to that of Jim Cummings, apparently because Jeremy Irons overdid his own voice when he says "you won't get a sniff without me" and couldn't complete the recording. Regardless its a brilliant scene and excellent song.

Some others I've remembered:

The Genie's brief impersonation of Jack Nicholson in Aladdin. No matter how many times I see that film, it still makes me laugh.

In The Jungle Book when King Louie is trying to quieten his majordomo (I think he's called Flunkey Monkey or something like that) while singing "I Wanna Be Like You".

Kronk's battle with the good and evil sides of his conscience in The Emperor's New Groove.

Captain Hook's hilarious attempts to escape the crocodile at Skull Rock in Peter Pan.

The Headless Horseman's pursuit of Ichabod Crane in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.

This one's a little more tangent-y than most. How many of you are aware of Nightmare Revisted, the tribute album of the Nightmare Before Christmas OST? If you listen carefully the Yoshida Brothers' version of Nabbed, some of the chords sound strangely similar to the opening riff to the Siamese Cat Song.

Probably a co-incidence down to how the original Kidnap the Sandy Claws was arranged, but I still find it funny to note.

[Flanger-Hanger]

The chase scene in Cinderella. Not just the idea of doing one (since the story doesn't really suggest having one), but how the reds of the guard's capes contrast with the blue of the backgrounds, and that's the only real colour you see for them, or how the staging parallels the previous ride to the ball, or how those guards oddly resemble the Headless Horseman (as I said here years ago*), and the music too! It such a good scene.

*shouldn't suprise anyone given the short gap between those film's releases and the similar artistic influences.

The animation where Ratagin breaks the doll and changes emotions constantly within a few seconds is also great. That and Basil popping up from behind the chair when the maid yells "Mr. Basil!" at him.

The mop's "death" in Sleeping Beauty, and how dramatic it is.

Not the line "Beware the groove!" but just the word "Groooooove" said seconds later to remind Kuzco. And probably every other line said in this movie and every moment with Yzma!

The way Medusa answers the phone and how she clutches it to hear it better or how the head of the Rescue Aid Society says "Bring in the bottle." with such authority and how his mouth and fingers move.

-A few specific parts of Dumbo's "Pink Elephants" sequence I've always found fascinating. One was with the freaky desert portion, with the elephant camel, cobra, and harem dancer. The other part was the two elephants dancing with a lightning bolt, which morphs into a group dance.

Joe Grant and Dick Huemer must've really loved those surreal sequences. They used it again for Der Fueher's Face, a similar build-up was used for the end of Alice in Wonderland, and yet another sequence was proposed for Lady and the Tramp.

-A major part of why I like The Little Mermaid is because of Ariel's hair. Glen Keane is very good at animating hair, so it was only appropriate that he would design Rapunzel many years later. Ariel's hair is always so lush, on both land and at sea, almost functioning as a character in itself.

-I've always liked how a few of Disney's heroines were barefoot. I'm not a nut about this like some folks at DeviantArt, but it's a large part of what makes Rapunzel such an adorable character. It underlined a layer of innocence and naturalism, and in the case of Eilonwy (based from pre-production art), a desire to break from the norm.

-As a kid, I sorta had a cartoon crush on Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Her poofy dress might've been the main reason, and for another, I think having it blue was just a good color choice. I also like how in some print versions, she has red-striped stockings.
Disney has been criticized for making their human characters too "realistic". But they've always had such specifically-appealing design choices that their characters always looked better than their live-action references. Whenever I see a picture of Kathryn Beaumont dressed as Alice, I always pay attention to how her hair isn't nearly as lush as Alice's hair.

-For some Disney films, like Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, and 101 Dalmatians, I generally enjoyed the scope of the characters' adventures, and how believable they were. As a kid, I had a dumbass tendency to act out all of my favorite parts from those movies.

-Many villain scenes that probably weren't intended to be funny and probably gave normal children nightmares I find laughing my ass off.

Some include Stromboli's methodical and boisterous plans for Pinocchio, where he throws a hatchet into an already-butchered puppet, and The Coachman's letting Foulfellow and Gideon in on his secret enterprise. For the latter, it showed how Foulfellow and Gideon were really small-time crooks compared to the people they kept feeding Pinocchio to.

I also enjoyed Jafar and Iago's banter, particularly when Iago lays out Jafar's plan to take over the kingdom. Iago wouldn't have been nearly as funny if Gilbert Gottfried didn't voice him.

-The music in Lady and the Tramp. My most favorite composition is played after "Bella Note", where the Tramp tries to persuade Lady into exploring the world. It's very reflective, somewhat melancholic, and one I often think of when I'm taking a walk, or just thinking to myself.

Huh, another one so soon...and AGAIN related to music.

I was listening to my Alice in Wonderland OST (...), and I noticed that the Queen of Heart's introduction music was a dark reprise of the White Rabbit's leitmotiff, as if to say "This is what the White Rabbit's mystery date was all about". It's neat because she has one of the the latest appearances by a villain in any Disney film, and it provides a way of linking her to the events throughout the movie in spite of her absence.

TinkerBell's birth appearance in the first Tink movie, in the white dress with her hair down; a total goddess (finally watched all three of them, and I LOVE the series, as each film seems better than the previous one). I actually have a Christmas Tree topper of her in that white dress with her hair down. It's too gorgeous. Can't wait to be able to use it someday.

Vincent Price in the Great Mouse Detective. He's just awesome. Especially his "Goodbye, So Soon" song, and especially that scene, when Basil figures out how to save them and sets the trap off early.

Spotting characters from Lady and the Tramp in Oliver and Company, and Mickey and Donald in A Goofy Movie.

More insanely specific moments:

. The way Ratigan snaps his pocketwatch shut when Basil insults him; I just love how a large, imposing character like him has such dainty, delicate motions.

. The moving shadow of Casey Junior on the hill in Dumbo.

. Ursula's sadistic, almost demented expression when her disguised is torn apart on Eric's ship and when she crawls past shocked wedding guests.

. Medusa holding the Devil's Eye diamond away from Snoops in The Rescuers, giving him only a moment's glance to look at it.

. Aladdin's movements when he talks about Jasmine's eyes hair on the island to Genie, particularly the part when he moves his arm down his back and smiles when stretching. Also, his voice throughout the balcony scene - I may have mentioned it, but it goes from the deep tones of his 'Prince Ali' personality to a softer tone when he apologises to Jasmine.

. Abu noticing the Magic Carpet for the first time in the Cave of Wonders.

. Genie's hands during the 'Friend Like Me' sequence, when faces appear on them and a smaller Genie dances with them.

. Cyril Proudbottom's voice when he and Toad are rising from beneath water in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad.

. Any of Merryweather's annoyed facial expressions.

I'll post more when I have time to think of some, but one that stands in my mind is in "Sleeping Beauty". The first time Hubert pours wine for Stefan and himself, he quickly wipes off the bottle after each pour. It's a very minute detail that the animator just decided to include, and I love that level of care and attention.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

I like everything about the Queen. She's so beautifully and elegantly designed. I particularly enjoy the scene at the beginning of the movie where she's summoning the magic mirror, accompanied by her arm movements. Also, during her spell, I like how her hair wildly flies around her head.

I like the shot of Snow White dancing with the dwarves.

Cinderella

I like Cinderella's singing voice. It's very soothing.

I like the art for the main titles. They're gorgeously designed. I also like the music, which, for the entire movie, has a soothing quality to it.

Sleeping Beauty

I like the fire that precedes Maleficent's appearances. I like Maleficent's silhouette in the chimney place. I like Aurora's trance expression as she's being lured up to the tower. I like, when Maleficent climbs to the top of the tower as she's battling Phillip, the way she directs from her staff a bolt of lightning toward him, and the precise note of the soundtrack at that moment.

The Little Mermaid

I like the flip Ariel does as she sings the note, "...ready to staaaaand..." during Part Of Your World. I like the way Ariel spins upward as a school of fish encircles her during Under the Sea. I like the way the sequence of Ariel signing Ursula's contract is executed, where Ursula sings the note, "...those poor...", Ariel stares at the quill with a determined look, "...-un...", Ariel takes the quill in her fingers, "...-fortunate sooooouuuuls!" and Ariel looks away as she signs her name on the contract. I like the entire sequence of Ariel losing her voice to Ursula. I like how, just as Ariel is about to kiss Prince Eric for real, the sun sets, she looks upward with a pained expression and gasps, and then slowly slides down, and then there's the next shot of Ariel sitting down with her fish tail sticking out of her dress.

Beauty and the Beast

I like the brief scene of Belle and the Beast having a snowball fight. I like how the Beast chases after Belle with his arms over his head, and Belle teases him by hiding around the tree.

Aladdin

I like Jasmine's hair and her headband. I like the way her hair is styled.

Mulan

Right after Mulan cuts her hair, I like the sequence of her throwing her short hair back as she ties it back.
