The Nightmare Before Christmas

A great movie. Orignal, creative, great. Love the music. I usually tend to watch this one for Christmas as the way I see it, it is a Christmas movie. It begins with the end of Halloween, and the rest of the movie is about Christmas. I picked up the 3D Blu-Ray combo a couple weeks ago and it looked fantastic on Blu.



History Channel Classics: The Real Story of Christmas

Not a bad doc, but a few things repeated from the previous ones I watched.

History Channel Classics: Modern Marvels: Christmas Tech

This one was pretty cool. Really liked the coverage of what goes on at a Christmas tree farm, how the Rockafeller Centre gets its tree, how glass ornaments are made, and history of Christmas ornaments and lights. Great doc.

I'm falling behind. That's the problem with December. There's too much going on. Started watching Die Hard last night, but was too tired to finish it. Will finish it tonight.

Die Hard

I admit, I am a Die Hard virgin. I never have seen the movie in its entirety from beginning to end, just parts. Well it does take place during Christmas. A young Bruce Willis with hair takes on a young Severus Snape. Great movie. I picked it up at Walmart the other day on Blu for $8.

71. Mixed Nuts (1984) - A star-filled mixture of some of Hollywood's finest in a story that just makes no sense. But is takes place at Christmas time so I watch it.

72. The Holly and The Ivy (1952) - A wonderful British made Christmas movie that doesn't get its fair share of showings on television during the holidays. Starring Ralph Richardson, Celia Johnson, Margaret Leighton and Denholm Elliott, this is the story of a British pastor, whose family gets together at Christmas time and reminisces about World War II. It is a wonderfully put together film and needs more exposure to the general public. Only recently has it been released to DVD.

73. Miracle on 34th Street (1994) - Using the excuse that no one watches black and white movies anymore, this classic story was remake in full glorious color, and with a cast that just doesn't match the original. Richard Attenborough stars as Kris Kringle, Elizabeth Perkins has the role originally played by Maureen O'Hara, Dylan McDermott has the envious role that John Payne did so well with, and Mara Wilson is no Natalie Wood. The film doesn't change hardly anything from the original except that it is in color, and I will stick with the original in beautiful black and white anytime I can.

Thursday, December 22, 2011:

74. A Christmas Carol (1984) - George C. Scott made a very good Scrooge in this telling of the Dicken's story. I like this one about as much as the original with Alastir Sim.

75. Hollywood Party (1934) - MGM's original plan was film an actual party with all of their contract stars, but then someone got the bright idea to make it a gathering of friends to honor the "Shmarzan" movie, and Lupe Velez loses some of her jewels, and other people drop by help out. Laurel & Hardy are there, and Ted Healy and his Stooges, soon to become The Three Stooges, were there. Highlight of the whole 79 minute running time is the contribution from Walt Disney of Mickey Mouse in a brief four and a half minutes color cartoon. Just a lot of fun for the whole family and all of this takes place on Christmas Eve.

76. Money Train (1995) Whenever I mention that I watch this one for the holidays, I always get chided. But it all takes place during the Christmas holidays and it is a very fun movie to watch. Woody Harrelson, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Lopez, and Robert Blake star in this caper film about two brothers who plan to rob a subway train carrying a whole lot of money. Just a whole lot of fun, and really worth a watch. I like this one better than "What Guys Can't Jump".

77. Friday After Next (2002) - Watched this one on recommenation from a friend, but I won't ever watch it again, and I won't recommend it to anyone. Filled with foul-language, fart jokes, and just all around gross humor this is the third installment from Ice Cube and his friends and its about two guys who finally move into a place of their own and get jobs as security guards at the mall. Their house gets robbed on Christmss Eve and the boys set out on their own to find out who did it. 'Nuff said. This film will not be watched again.

78. The Year Without A Santa Claus (1974) - One of our family favorites and I just now found out it was only a television show. With voices from Mickey Rooney and Shirley Booth this is a very cute story about Mrs. Claus wanting Santa to take a year off. Fun watching for children of all ages.

79. White Christmas (1954) - Enough has been said about this one that I just sit back and enjoy. Great entertainment!!!

80. Holiday Inn (1942) - The movie that introduced us to the song "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby. This is a holiday tradition to watch. Just plain old good family entertainment.

This short film not only is a sweet holiday feature, but it also continues the mythology of the "HTTYD" universe. Funny jokes, good characters revisited and a well-worked storyline makes this the top new Christmas viewing for me.

Dec. 24: #8 The Nativity Story (2006) 1/2
While much of the time Scripture is spoken verbatim by the cast, various divergences from the biblical text doesn't warm me much to this film. As presented it's a good intentioned movie that leaves a shallow impression of a romanticized nativity scene.

Most likely my last Christmas movie post. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Watched Elf the other night. This is only my second time watching it. Great flick! And as a bonus it has a very cute Zooey Deschanel...

The last two docs in the "History of the Holidays Christmas" set. Two very good docs about Christmas during war time. Actually, kinda bizarre if you think about it. During WWI, the opposing sides quit fighting for a night or two, got together to play football or socialize, and then went back to killing each other the next day.

As you can see, I'm still watching Christmas flicks this holiday week. I spent Christmas alone, but will be spending it with my parents and sis on New Year's weekend - will finally get Turkey with all the trimmings since I even missed out on Thanksgiving this year. Will be capping off my holiday viewing with Christmas Vacation this weekend.

Didn't even have time to watch any Rankin Bass stuff or other classic movies this year - just too busy, glad December is wrapping up soon.

Nice post above. I LOVE Zooey in Elf. I'm in love with her in THAT movie. I can enjoy her elsewhere, but in that movie, WOW.

Anyways, I actually finally got to watch some stuff. I mean, I halfway watched a lot of stuff, sometimes just listened to it, while I was working at the computer. Veetle.com had some awesome Christmas Channels (that might still be up). But with Christmas Eve and Day finally around, and having had a big movie night last night, I did some good viewings (full on with popcorn and everything) of both Home Alone films (that was our Christmas night double feature; hadn't seen them in a while, and even on VHS, it was great to be reminded how fantastic those films are, even though that whole family was a bunch of spoiled brats, ha), and last night, The Nativity Story, The Bishop's Wife, and It's a Wonderful Life, all excellent films (I still consider It's a Wonderful the best movie ever made, even if it has some technical issues one could quibble about (a few jump cuts) and even though it's not my FAVORITE movie (but among my top faves). I could say I watched Muppet Christmas Carol, but I was also baking at the time and missed most of it probably, and I only caught A Christmas Story in bits and pieces through the 24 hr airing. Though I wanted to catch the Disney Christmas Parade, I continued with a long streak of sleeping through it. I had generally lost interest in it due to all the promoting it does (not the old, cool promoting, like behind the scenes looks at the next animated features) before the actual parade, but this year I figured I wanted to see the Muppets there... Anyways, I did get to watch "The Small One". I always put that on because it makes my sister cry like a baby, which I find hilarious. Even when SHE was a baby, it did that to her. I semi-watched the other toons on that disc too, Mickey's Christmas Carol and Pluto's Christmas Tree. I also half-attentively watched the House of Mouse Christmas movie (man, is that bad, aside from the shorts), and I watched Fat Albert's Christmas and the new George of the Jungle Chrismas from a DVD of Christmas toons I recently bought. Probably caught some other stuff too, but I forget what. I may still watch more, too.

Christmas Movies

Bachelor Mother (1939) - 6.5
Not as much a Christmas movie as it is one that takes place during the holiday. I love that Ginger Rogers sells Donald Duck toys. Must be a benefit RKO gets for distributing Disney’s movies. The ending sucks.

Remember the Night (1940) - 7
I actually really like this up to the point where you meet MacMurray’d family. Then it just gets stagnant for me.

The Shop Around the Corner (1940) - 8
Fantastic little movie that not enough people have seen (although they’ve probably seen one of the remakes, You’ve Got Mail). Leagues above the Judy Garland remake too. Definitely a Christmas classic.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) - 8
While it can get a little depressing, it’s a wonderful movie, although I always want something bad to happen to Potter.

A Miracle on 34th Street (1947) - 8
Probably my favorite Christmas movie. Has there ever been a more perfect on-screen santa? I believe. I love that it was filmed in New York, in Macy’s and in the actual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Bishop’s Wife (1947) - 7.5
Excellent music and perfect casting (although the child actor could be better). I bought into Cary Grant being an angel 100% and they hardly used an visual effects at all. It goes on a little too long, with the story getting sidetracked towards the end.

Christmas in Connecticut (1945) - 6
Just never really cared for it that much. Just a little too Hollywood and it goes on a little too long.

Holiday Affair (1949) - 7
Kind of underrated. It does get a little too sappy at the end but I really like the acting and character relationships. Nice and short.

The Santa Clause (1994) - 5.5
The real world stuff all works for me but the Santa stuff is just horribly executed. At times it’s a mature movie and at other times it’s a straight-up children’s movie.

The Polar Express (2004) - 5.5
Too much filler, would’ve worked as a 45-50min TV Special. Fix facial animation, recast Mandark and cut songs, then you’ll have a classic. Leave Silvestri’s score, it’s one of his best.

Christmas Specials

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) - 5.5
I don’t know how I watched this as a kid, it’s terrible. It was my first time seeing it in over a decade and not only is the animation god awful, but the voice acting, the writing, the story and especially the characters (a prospector and an elf that wants to be a dentist, ugh). It’s as bad on paper as it is in execution.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) - 8
From Thurl Ravenscroft’s catchy song to Chuck Jones wonderful art direction to the iconic story written by Dr. Suess, it’s practically perfect. The one Christmas special I have to watch every year.

Frosty the Snowman (1969) - 7
Unlike the previous two iconic television specials, this is one that I didn’t own and never watched as a kid. So I just caught it on TV for the first time and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be (I had low expectations after re-watching Rudolph). I liked it’s short length and childlike innocence.

A Chipmunk Christmas (1981) - 6.5
Kind of a mess of a special. Chuck Jones designed the characters but it doesn’t really come through that well. The characters will go from being subtle / reserved to having Looney Tunes-like motion. The story is also a little too simple but it captures the Christmas spirit well enough.

Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983) - 8
Hands down my favorite telling of A Christmas Carol (although I do enjoy A Flintstones Christmas Carol, as flawed as it may be). They do change a lot but the pacing is just perfect.

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas (1999) - 6.5
Kind of become a classic for me. I wish Disney had invested a little more money into this production, as I feel the stories and their morals are well worth telling (even if they're all borrowed stories).

Shrek the Halls (2007) - 5.5
Everything I dislike about Shrek the Turd, only holiday themed.

Merry Madagascar (2009) - 6.5
Madagascar kind of lends itself to television. It seems like they should’ve made it a television series instead of making the sequels.

Prep & Landing (2009) - 7.5
This holds up and upon second viewing I can declare it a classic.

Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special (2010) - 6.5
I wish it was a little less immature in it’s humor but I think it has the right spirit.

Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury (2011) - 6
Everything I hate about the ending to the movie, only holiday themed.

Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas (2011) - 6
Animation is gorgeous and I like the new characters. Just don’t really care for the story.

Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice (2011) - 7
The kid is just the right amount of adorable and I enjoyed it almost as much as the original. Time to make this either an annual or biannual christmas special series.

Christmas Episodes

Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire (1989) - 8
Just makes me sad to see how much the show has fallen since this classic episode.

It's a Wonderful Tiny Toons Christmas Special (1992) - 7
Pretty clever at times, I only wish it wasn’t soo loud, if you know what I mean.

Phineas and Ferb Christmas Vacation! (2009) - 7.5
I never would’ve though it but this is actually pretty good. I saw this first and then started watching the series afterwords.

Unfortunately, I never got around to watching Die Hard or Home Alone (I watched Jingle All the Way earlier this summer, so I didn’t feel like watching it). Other then that, I’m quite happy with what all I was able to get in this year.

I want to watch Christmas Vacation as my final movie, but I'm too tired right now from skiing.

Maybe I'll watch it when I get back to Calgary on Tuesday, but Valentines stuff is starting to show up in stores now so it may be a little wierd watching Christmas stuff now.
