I enjoy Doug and Rob's the Nostalgia Critic Videos. They are fun to watch sometimes. I do not watch every episode though. It just depends on what he is reviewing for me to hold my interest. I also occasionally watch Linkara's Atop the 4th Wall series and some of Brad Jones' (Cinema Snob, DVD-R Hell, 80s Dan) videos.

I don't like many of the TGWTG members and their videos. Only two I watch now is Cinema Snob and Doug's NC stuff.

I used to like That Guy With the Glasses, but now, since almost last year, I hate the people at TGWTG except for The Cinema Snob, Guru Larry, and MikeJ. The three are more funny compared to Doug Walker or any other people in TGWTG. However, Doug Walker's only funny attempt is when he is making 5 second movies. That's just my opinion.

I didn't know much about this sort of thing, beyond extremely basic critics on YouTube (in other words, people just talking about movies), until I started seeing AVGN on YouTube. Even though I was a (very little) kid during the Atari 2600 days, coming from parents who were thrifty in the gaming department and considering the high prices (what, 50 bucks these days?), I have never had more than a few games for whichever console I owned at any given time. Right now, I own a PS3 and a Wii, and I have like 3 games for each, ha. Still, I got pretty hooked on AVGN's videos, and that says a lot. On the opposite side, my best friend is a hardcore gamer, and he never really got into web-videos of any kind, ha.
Anyway, from AVGN's vids, I started to see his nostalgic movie reviews too, and some of his other stuff. I thought it was really cool, though I haven't seen any of HIS stuff in a LONG time it seems. I somehow discovered Nostalgia Critic, also through YouTube, and eventually I was just watching his videos. Somehow, I found Cinema Snob after that, and since I had seen all of Nostalgia Critic's stuff (and didn't always like his negativity and over excited... ness), I soon was mostly just watching Snob. In Snob's case, I don't even remember where I found him, but I made it onto his site, and I watch pretty loyally, though I don't watch every video he puts up, but most of them. Once in a while though, I remember to go back and check out Nostalgia Critic's site, but not too often. I need to do it soon though. The Holidays are a good time. Is that Star Wars holiday special on new? I can't remember if I've seen it before. Definitely need to watch it now, though, regardless.
I honestly have never seen the other critics from TGWTG, not even Nostalgia Chick (I thought I heard she hated Disney, and that killed the appeal for me; what's the real story on that?). I have only seen the characters on that latest movie they did, where they quest to find the Power Glove or something (it's been a while since I saw it, but I actually really thought it was funny and enjoyable). I do need to explore these other guys though. Man, I'd love to be a part of that group myself someday, though I'm about to rework my show into just a movie hosting type thing.

Here's a few I enjoy of Doug's typical review as Nostalgia Critic

Also this one about Gargoyles, has some jokes about some plot holes, but he says it's a very good series torwards the end of the review and talks about the positive things about it. Could be useful if one wanted to try to get some influence on releasing the rest of Gargoyles tv series on DVD or somehow, dmc, disney generations etc

I'm a member of their message board but I don't comment very often. However, I'm a huge fan of the website and here's the post I posted in the "Rank the Video Producers on the Site" thread, where Nostalgia Critic / Doug came in at #5 and The Cinema Snob didn't even make it. (I made this back in maybe August, so obviously Doug has made a lot more videos and this order has changed a little bit. Lupa has become tied with Oancitizen for my 3rd favorite and Phelous has fallen slightly- even he's realized that what he does is extremely repetitive and he needs a new focus. What he did instead was start to defend the movies slightly, which he did to the point of WTF?-ery with Wrong Turn 2 and The Amityville Horror remake.)
I, sadly, haven't gotten into watching enough of the video game reviewers / commentators, so my list will have to be more for movie, TV, and music reviewers:

1. Nostalgia Chick - I know a lot of people have grown tired of her, and I'm definitely a little disappointed myself that her work has become more skit-oriented, but even when she's being (much too) brutally honest about the shortcomings of entertainment made either by or for or heavily featuring women, I still find myself walking away from her actual commentaries feeling both inspired and made to think a little more. Plus, if I couldn't take someone hacking at my nostalgia- I wouldn't bother watching her in the first place.

2. PushingUpRoses with guests or PUR + Paw together - these two together are DYNAMITE. They are razor sharp smart, have a great chemistry / friendship vibe that warms me as I watch their Let's Plays, and they are absolutely HILARIOUS. I haven't watched Paw's solo videos but I did catch PushingUpRoses' top (9? 10? 11?) music videos and videos on Disney and Barbie and she is great alone sometimes. But together, these two literally are responsible for some of my best times coming to this site.

3. Oancitizen - like the other commentators I love, he either makes me think or just nails the things he talks about. Of course, I still have one major problem with him- but it's just one review. Everything else has been a pretty good learning experience. He does a great job of informing and entertaining at the same time.

4. Phelous / Lupa (tie, which isn't surprising considering the films they review are linked closely by subject matter and subgenres) - Of all the TGwtG, I don't know that there is anyone more thorough than Phelous. When he goes through a movie, he picks that thing apart- top to bottom. Which, when I come to this site for a definitive Bad Movie Review, this is what I come for. He's also great with mixing other clips and music references into a review. Lupa is my vote for the site's #1 skit person. I think she does the best, most likable, funniest skits and I love her costumes, her hair, and love her cameos in other producers' videos. She's also funny and I think I love her variety of choices more than any other TGwtG's producers. The Princess Promenade video was unexpectedly hysterical!

Not to mention, of the last 3 reviews I've watched- Milk Money was the one I liked the most. I don't think he knows how to pick his battles very well (Care Bears? Really... Then, he has an interesting thing going on in his reviews- he gave an amazing, thorough review of the Scream films that is a dream for people like me who think the franchise is underrated among horror fans, yet he did a positive review of Wolf Creek which I thought was an overrated movie and yet... it was a great, well-written, and thorough review. He had very good points and that's an important trait for a reviewer since I didn't even like the movie and I enjoyed his review a lot.

FilmBrain - again, a very likable person and very thorough in his reviews but he hasn't grabbed me yet and I've seen at least 11 or 12 of his videos.
Nash - I got into him so fast and laughed so hard that... well, 3 videos into his What the Fuck is Wrong with You series, the feeling just died. I watched 5 or so videos afterward and was completely letdown. I don't know whether it was his newer videos or his older videos that were stronger but, I don't think I'm going back to his videos.
Todd in the Shadows - it doesn't help that I haven't listened to most of the songs he reviews before, but - even though he's pretty thorough (and that's the #1 thing I respect about a videomaker) - I cannot STAND the people commenting below his videos, he makes it very hard to shrug off his disapproving opinions, and... well... he considered Katy Perry's "California Gurls" one of the best pop songs of 2010. I imagine that's been done to death in comments and among community members, but - even though he's one of the site's most popular producers - I have the hardest time accepting his opinions than anyone else. How can I accept his opinions on Alanis Morissette after he praises something as awful as "California Gurls"? And this is coming from an unabashed Ke$ha fan: when even I think a pop song is awful, that's really saying something.
The Distressed Watcher - I like his social and political opinions, but in general, his reviewing personality is too dry and lacking charisma. That said, I really liked his Maximum Overdrive review a lot.

The last few Nostalgia Chick episodes were pretty damn inspired. She can be really funny. And though harsh on Disney, she always explains her reasons and just because I'm a Disney fan myself does not mean I can't enjoy her take on things. I was not too fond of her 'alcoholism is a disease' rant a few months ago though. That, to me at least, is a controversial topic she should have stayed out of.
Nonetheless, her more analytical approach in the tradition of cultural studies is very interesting and refreshing for the kind of website that it is. As a cultural student myself I can say she's dead on most of the time when it comes to representations of women in film and television. And she always does it without coming across preachy.
The Nostalgia critic himself is also good fun. His take on atrocities like the animated Titanic films and the likes is hilarious.

I need to re-watch her vid on Top 10 Disney Deaths, but I really outright hated her videos for The Worst Witch and The Lion King 3D. One of her theories is that bad Hollywood movies are actually better than bad low budget movies. Methinks she comes from a more Hollywood oriented background in her nostalgia and movie watching orientation rather than a fair and balanced combination of high and low. Meanwhile, Obscurus Lupa and Diamanda Hagan seem to have the very opposite opinion. Guess whose side I take (coming from a guy whose top 3 favorite movies cost under 2 million to make... combined)? She didn't even have an official position on The Worst Witch, nothing truly analytical or thought provoking to say. She didn't even find any humor in the movie. She just insulted everyone who liked it by trying to find as many different ways to say it sucked. Proving that Halloween just isn't her holiday (also- Benzaie did a better satirical Jem and the Holograms video, MUCH funnier). Why the hell didn't she go after Valentine instead? At least that movie deserved it. She can be pretty darn lazy sometimes. In the case of Lion King, I just see her backtracking so fast, while I was watching the video I was afraid she might pull something and end up in the hospital. She was literally kissing BatB's, Aladdin's, and Lion King's asses. Comes off as sheer hypocrisy after her rants on The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, and Mulan. Not to mention no one could top Confused Matthew's (obviously not a member of TGwtG but a fellow Blipper) take on The Lion King. A video I cannot possibly recommend more highly: http://www.confusedmatthew.com/The-Lion-King.php (one mistake, though: he seems to have included Beauty and the Beast in what he considers to be flawless Disney films).

I'm confused. The biggest flaw in The Lion King is that young Simba is unlikable? I'm sorry, I may have missed the memo, but who says we have to like him?Lazario wrote:Not to mention no one could top Confused Matthew's (obviously not a member of TGwtG but a fellow Blipper) take on The Lion King. A video I cannot possibly recommend more highly: http://www.confusedmatthew.com/The-Lion-King.php (one mistake, though: he seems to have included Beauty and the Beast in what he considers to be flawless Disney films).
The whole point was that young Simba was an ass. But being tricked into believing he killed his own father sort of redeemed him, didn't it? I mean for God's sake he was depressed for the entire second half of the film. He paid for nine lifetimes of mistakes.
And that's coming from someone who doesn't care that much for TLK. I truly believe come people are just desperate to rip apart beloved films. Why? Attention of course. We all know internet attention means ... uhm... nothing?
Sorry, nothing against you Lazario. I was just angered by that review.

Good, than I know both CM and I did our jobs. However, Matthew did an incredible job in taking the film apart. For example, near the close of his review he mentioned the biggest problem with the film was that all the characters (not just Simba) were either evil or stupid. That happens to be true. Just re-watch the 3rd part video where he BRILLIANTLY re-enacts the ending with real logic. He did a perfect job in explaining why all the characters are either stupid or "evil" (intensely selfish). Doesn't that make the movie's problem bigger than just Simba? Why didn't you mention that in your reply? Did you watch the entire review?PatrickvD wrote:I'm confused. Your "attention" theory seems pretty crude to me. For example, so The Nostalgia Chick isn't desperate for attention herself when she does a Disney video that would leave viewers thinking she loved the movie or show she was talking about but if she'd done an anti-Lion King video, that would make her an attention-whore?

Pretty much this. Lion King by no mean is the best thing but the hate it gets seems to me people just try to hate the film just to be non conformist and "hip". CM's review to me felt like he was trying to rip apart the film just for sake of it. The only legit criticism I think was a good point from him was the plothole about Zaru not being able backfire Scar's announcement of Simba and Mufasa's deaths and the lioness not being suspicious about it.PatrickvD wrote:. I find almost all of them at TGWTG to be very attention whorish and hypocrites. They take unsettling offense if someone find their review, movies, or opinion as shit or crap. Spoony a prime example of that. I recall hearing this is why Pap64 left TGWTG site.Lazario wrote: Your "attention" theory seems pretty crude to me. There is only very few that doesn't seems like that.

That would make sense and all, but... did you happen to miss the part where he explained the reason why he was doing this was because he's always felt this way about the film? Not to mention, much like PatrickvD, you're coming to the defense of the film with an attitude of "how could anyone not like the movie?" even though you claim you don't think it's perfect. Perhaps I'm reading you wrong but, I don't see the motivation for this insight of yours. Except maybe exposing Spoony for being a jerk but this movie, review, reviewer, etc(.) have nothing to do with Spoony. This only adds to the necessity I feel of CM's review. He has a point, only I'll add to it with: this movie seems to trigger a weird response in people that makes them defend it for ridiculous reasons. People: the planet will keep spinning if a few people are allowed to speak their mind. "Conformity"? Either way, has nothing to do with it.Super Aurora wrote:CM's review to me felt like he was trying to rip apart the film just for sake of it.
Really? Why weren't all his criticisms legit? I happen to think they were. Does that make me a non-comformist too?Super Aurora wrote:The only legit criticism
Seriously, people- this whole "non conformist" bullshit (which I saw in the other thread where this review was mentioned) is literally the worst argument I have ever heard for why people not only dislike this movie but for why they would actually voice their opinion about it.
However, I'm definitely intrigued to hear more about this darkside of TGwtG stories. I don't watch Spoony or Linkara (though I've heard a lot of people don't like him either) but... I didn't know pap64 used to... make videos over there? Or, did he talk on their live chats or something? Message board? Not that this compares in either way but I submitted a very lengthy disagreement over one of Oancitizen's reviews and ended up talking it out with the woman who does his title animation images and I never had any problem with people rejecting my take on their reviews. Of course, there only are a couple people who actively answer back to their fans on the board. Diamanda is one.

I was literally just about to say something really stupid like, "I thought pap64's name was Pedro."
But yeah... so, we have a little superstar on the site?!: http://www.dvdizzy.com/forum/profile.ph ... ile&u=4453
Except for the really painfully added "God bless" at the end (when will this I-Will-Force-My-Religion-on-You insanity end?!), that was an amazing response video. I don't watch MarzGurl (mostly because I don't know where in the Index she is or what she does). But since being on the board, I've actually heard she's courted controversy with LGBT fans of TGwtG for some allegedly homophobic comment she made in an interview. It was dismissed by people who claim they know her but, interestingly enough (and not to keep plugging Diamanda Hagan: WATCH HER), Diamanda didn't take a side either way but made sure to let someone know who seemed to be blindly defending MG without knowing her position that if she said something wrong, she should be held accountable for it.
TGwtG is just big enough as a community where a lot of people aren't anything like her or Spoony. I mean, it's not like being a member of the site automatically makes someone a jerk. But anyway, that being said, I'm still interested in any bad-mouthing of the people there. At least if anyone has anything that isn't related to Spoony, MarzGurl, or Linkara.
^ EDIT / HUGE MISTAKE: The member of TGwtG who allegedly made the homophobic remark wasn't MarzGurl, it was JesuOtaku.

All I'm saying is I don't think or see TLK as bad as people make it out to be. Is it overrated? Sure. I can see that from others point of view. Is it so down right horrible at level of say Home on the Range and such? I have hard time seeing that. We aren't defending the film in sense because we may like it, but more of asking why is it bashed so often. Even If I didn't like or care for TLK at all, the point people have made to disliking it I would still have hard time seeing. I can see, even though I disagree with it, your bashing on BatB on the points you made, but I don't grasp the some of the flaws people are complaining about with TLK such as "kid Simba is a brat" that I heard some say. I mean, he's a kid and kids of royalty are brats. They're spoil and delusional of reality. I thought that characterization of Simba was something that makes sense and that the whole movie is his character development of changing from being that spoil delusional royal brat to a man who must make his decision and return to defend his people and what it truly means to be a king and ruler of a land.
Maybe you can elaborate for me and the others who you say are "so triggered to defend it", on why it's so bad with bullet points or such.
Now I will admit that I been a long while since I saw CM's review but from what I did remember, I didn't find it anything of a fair criticism. That's all.
And what does Spoony as to CM? I never made any comparison of the two.
It been a long while since I saw the review so I don't remember every detail, not to mention i'm hearing impaired and isn't able to hear every word being said. But the one I did hear and that did catch me that I remember, that one I did find reasonable criticism to be understandable.Lazario wrote:Really? Why weren't all his criticisms legit? Maybe that wasn't nice of me to say and I should of said it differently but when I'm getting at is that I haven't find any real criticism to that magnitude as people made it out as. Hence why it lead me to an impression of seeming people hating it just because it was popular. Although you could say in counterargument against me that same could be said with you vs others viewpoint on Sleeping Beauty. But from the way I look at the two if we are to just criticize just solely on story points and characters development, SB seems to have much more glaring errors to spot than Lion King does. And I like both films.Lazario wrote:Seriously, people- this whole "non conformist" bullshit (which I saw in the other thread where this review was mentioned) is literally the worst argument I have ever heard for why people not only dislike this movie but for why they would actually voice their opinion about it.
Pap64 was only a member at the site, but from what he told me, he gradually started to find them more and more obnoxious and "elitist" and thus started to dislike many of them through experience and such. You will have to ask him about the stories as he knows it more and was much more involved and knowledgable with the history of that site. When I watched some of the stuff to see what he was talking about, it did started to make sense and clear to me why he said that. Thanks.PatrickvD wrote:Way to miss a point.
Well, that's your perception. In reality, The Lion King is far from being one of Disney's biggest punching bags. That's because it's considered one of the studio's biggest hits and audience favorites. I thought you knew that as well. So, I hope you can understand where I'm coming from. Why would you bother to even question why someone would have serious problems with the film if you yourself can see it's overrated? It's not bashed that often, what you mean to say is that some people bash it harder than others. Not the same thing. So, what you're really asking is why do some people bash it so hard. And I think Confused Matthew explained that perfectly. All the characters in the film are stupid / unlikable and the story is extremely void of typical logic. Those things together are not a good combination. And, again so you can see where I'm coming from- it's a huge change in formula from The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, which is I hope why you can now see why I dislike Lion King and Beauty and the Beast so much. It's not a matter of just one character or a few logic problems.Super Aurora wrote:All I'm saying is I don't think or see TLK as bad as people make it out to be. Is it overrated? Sure. Fine. But, now think of it in the context of who raised him. You need to remember the amount of reverence Mufasa carries in every scene, the huge deal the movie frequently makes of it, and then think: how could he have raised such a little bastard like Simba? Can anyone possibly explain that with something real the movie provides or is it just going to be another impression people who liked (or, in your case, didn't hate) the movie got?Super Aurora wrote:I don't grasp the some of the flaws people are complaining about with TLK such as "kid Simba is a brat" that I heard some say. After the reasons I've already mentioned, it's all personal bias: I can't stand the movie's music (with the exception of Scar's villain song). The voice actors are mostly obnoxious. The story ideas are just lame- I would much rather have seen what Walt Era Disney would have done with the idea than the Broadway Musical Era Disney. Again, personal bias, but I am not a fan of the kind of epics Disney started producing at that time. And even if I had been, I would say Aladdin is a far better mix and a more magical movie.Super Aurora wrote:Maybe you can elaborate for me and the others who you say are "so triggered to defend it", on why it's so bad with bullet points or such.
That explains it.Super Aurora wrote:Now I will admit that I been a long while since I saw CM's review but from what I did remember, I didn't find it anything of a fair criticism. That's all.
Ha. Well, if we both don't agree on popularity being a shitty way of deciding what's good or not, the issue here is much bigger than majority opinion over one movie. I never use popularity as an excuse to say something is good or bad. And I expect the same from people capable of using their brain.Super Aurora wrote:Maybe that wasn't nice of me to say and I should of said it differently but when I'm getting at is that I haven't find any real criticism to that magnitude as people made it out as. I actually have no idea what you're trying to say there. I would never compare Sleeping Beauty to The Lion King. Night and day.Super Aurora wrote:Although you could say in counterargument against me that same could be said with you vs others viewpoint on Sleeping Beauty.

More from CM on Lion King responding to criticisms of his opinions.
Also interesting is his Lion King 2 review, because he actually likes that movie and explains why. In that same review though, he admits to adoring Lion King 1's animation, calling it the best looking 2-D animated movie ever, and music, saying he listens to it all the time.
