Miramax and Pixar talking

Post by Mr. Toad »

The New York Post reported today that Mirimax and Pixar are talking about doing a deal for distributions of their firms.

That could really make Disney and especially Eisner look silly if their two former partners get together and outshine them.

Mirimax is also rumoured to be splitting with Disney after they refused to distribute the Michael Moore film made by Mirimax.

Miramax is still owned by Disney. There's a lot of speculation that Eisner wants them gone and that the Weinsteins want to leave (marking possibly their first agreement in history). That's led a lot of people to suspect that the Weinsteins may buy out Miramax from Disney. Will it happen? Who knows. I think it's eventually a good idea, but not right now... especially with this bit of news. SURELY Eisner senses danger. But everytime I use "surely" along with "Eisner," I end up eating my words... so we'll see.

I think it's not unfeasible that the Wienstiens could leave Disney, but I'm pretty sure Disney will want to keep the Miramax name (all the Oscar® connections and associations with the public you see). I can't see Disney wanting to keep the Dimension name though, so I suppose that could go - ironic as it brings in more money than the Miramax label does. (Note to aspiring film studio heads - always appeal to the lowest common denominator).

Loosing the name would hurt the brothers, as it was named after their parents (Miriam and Max I think).

As for Job's involvement I doubt he'll have much say on the Weinstein brother's films. One will still do Oscar® driven artistic films, the other will concentrate on horror and other genre films and Jobs will have his animated films. It sounds sort of like Dreamworks SKG to me. Katzenberg doesn't interfere with Speilberg's films, and vice versa.

Note, Dreamworks may be a studio, but still needs Universal for their distribution (or another studio in the case of co-production films). So this wouldn't solve the problem of Pixar's next distributor.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Disney does own Mriamax, but the headline-grabbing Weinsteins could always move on:

http://24hour.startribune.com/24hour/en ... 5056c.html

"Both sides are engaged in sticky talks over extending the contracts of Miramax's founders, Bob and Harvey Weinstein. Their current deal expires next year, but Disney has an option to extend the contract through 2009."

Their relationship with Eisner is strained at best.
Will Disney feel the need to pick up their options to make sure Disney gets the Pixar rights instead of Fox or Universal?
