Disney Consumer Products internship

Post by Neal »

Hello all,

As you may or may not have deduced from previous posts elsewhere on these forums, I am currently a college student.

I am going to be a junior in fall (crazy how fast college goes) and will be looking to complete an internship before senior year.

I am a journalism major, with a focus in 'advertising management.' - Essentially, I am a bit more on the business side of advertising than creative. Not by choice, mind you! I wanted to go pure creative but there are few colleges that offer that (in fact, I only know of one in Texas) - and that was too far from home. I'm already a twelve hour drive from my parents.

ANYWAYS - so, I have always wanted to combine my future advertising career with a company I am passionate about. I love Disney (le duh) and equally so Nintendo (who kindly do not provide internship opportunities.)

I want a career advertising either movies or games.

I am interested in Disney Consumer Products - who handle much of the toy, clothes, game merchandising of Disney movies.

I see they offer an internship:

Now, my mother read to me an article in the newspaper the other day about the plight of American internships and how many are non-paid and border on breaking U.S. labor laws. Disney was cited multiple times for the fact they sell their internships as being these wonderful growth experiences, but often the interns end up being nothing more than janitors and other low-low end jobs.

Can anyone attest/help me find out of this Disney Consumer Products internship is more legit? It says it's paid and there's "no serving coffee." It sounds like what I'd like to do - spend time working with Disney characters and the Disney brand.

Does anyone know more about this internship? THANKS! :D

While I'm sure it's not quite as good as it sounds and it probably doesn't pay much, it pays something (more than many internships can claim) and it does sound promising and definitely couldn't hurt to add to any resume, especially the resume of someone who'd like to work at DCP after graduating.

Go for it! In ten years, you'll be happy you did! :D
