Look, pick one or the other, because at this point it seems that you're really trying too hard to come up with a convincing argument.
"The thing that distinguishes us from everybody else, and always has and always will, is our past. The goal is to look over our shoulder and see Snow White and Pinocchio and Dumbo standing there, saying, 'Be this good.' We shouldn't be intimidated by them; they're an arrow pointing someplace."
I think he was talking in terms of quality, as saying "These were great movies, we shouldn't be afraid of trying again to make great movies, we can do it again, we can still be that good".
Disney Duster wrote:you still don't understand. Since Walt Disney is not around to tell us what is Disney anymore, we must figure it out. And things like Discworld and alien gun violence and Tangled's name seem to be un-Disney.
Yeah, well the joke's on you, because I finally got that ouija app for my cellphone, and I conjured Walt Disney's spirit last night, and he said to screw the Mickey Mouse project, that what they should be doing is an adaptation of "House of Leaves", produced by Guillermo del Toro and David Lynch, with a script by Neil Gaiman and directed by David Cronenberg.

Hey, that idea I like. I just hope it's 3D like he would have wanted.

We should ask Uncle Walt about other shit and see what he thinks. Ask him how he feels about adding Jack Sparrow and Barbossa to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride which then absorbed all of its Disney Essence (c).
"Ta ta ta taaaa! Look at me... I'm a snowman! I'm gonna go stand on someone's lawn if I don't get something to do around here pretty soon!"

He's cool with that, but he keeps waiting for them to add Keith Richards, wait, I'm losing signal, damn you Sprint NEXTEL!

and then of course, he would've LOVE Pixar.

He also would've seen gaming for what it is: an interactive storytelling experience. He might've even endorsed Kingdom Hearts(Ideas anyway, but maybe advised a few changes to the execution).

Walt would've loved 3D. He was already making a couple 3D cartoons in the 50s.

He also would've found ways to utilize the internet that no one else(today, or alternative today) would even think possible. Like 3D CG virtual tours of planned attractions at the parks(minus the actual riding parts) and having attractions based around upcoming movies. And having entire blogs where he would deliver us artwork and original treatments for coming films or attractions

I agree. I can't see anything in that quote that refers to "essence" or "what Walt would have done". Roy Disney says that Disney should want to 'be this good' not reproduce those films.

How could he not understand it when you repeat the same old tired argument day after day? Once again, find a quote from Walt himself or someone at Disney who says that those things are "unDisney", otherwise you're simply just repeating your opinion again.

Why don't I "understand"? Has it ever crossed your mind that maybe, just maybe, I *do* understand, but simply disagree with what you're saying? I'm just glad Disney made such good movies as Lilo & Stitch and Rapunzel.

But you changed the blue color. It's not Magical Marky Blue anymore, but some Microsoft Paint wannabe. For shame, Brends, for shame.

Considering that Mort is pretty "mort"* at the moment, may I ask WHY have we still been going on about whether it's Disney enough or not anyhow? I mean, is it REALLY that necessary, considering it may not be made?

*"Mort" meaning "dead" in French, making for a fitting title to the story. ;)

Did I miss something? Andreas Deja talked about it a couple of days ago in a german Winnie the Pooh promo-interview. At least I assume so; he said that Clements/ Musker are working on the next handdrawn animated feature and that it is still in an early development stage. I thought he was talking about "Mort"...

Sigh. Unfortunately at this stage we can only make assumptions.

What are the odds the fellow who let slip at the TAG Blog that Mort is dead was simply spreading a lie?

Although, I doubt Mort will be revived, I hope that Ron & John will work on another hand-drawn film eventually.
Anon #1: Btw, does anyone know of the whereabouts of Clements & Musker? Are they still at Disney after Mort's cancellation? Are they pitching new ideas? Are they working on a project?

Anon #2: I spoke to Ron Clements by phone about 2-3 weeks ago. He said that Mort might still see the light of day and that he's still at Disney. Ron and John are working on ideas if Mort doesn't work out. We also talked some about hand-drawn animation and he told me overall they've been pretty supportive.

Anon #3: I know Ron and John are still there and they went up to Pixar about a month ago, I think to pitch some features (2D).

That is excellent news, glad to hear that Ron and John are still at work and, if Ron is to believed, Lasseter and the management are still supportive of hand-drawn animation. It would be nice if something could be done with Mort, I reread the book last week and couldn't help wondering how it would have looked as a film. Regardless of the project, hopefully Ron and John will have a hand-drawn feature in development soon.

I agree. I can't see anything in that quote that refers to "essence" or "what Walt would have done". Roy Disney says that Disney should want to 'be this good' not reproduce those films.
But I did not say it meant to reproduce the films, either. The fact that he says to look back at the old films means to make the new films like those, otherwise he would say "Look at any good films and just make a good film" but he specifically said looke at their old films, meaning to make them in not just a good way, but a Disney way, with Disney essence.

And Walt may have liked some 3D things, but he still showed a preference for traditional animation, with how much more traditional animation he did, and how it is known that he wanted things to look like storybook illustrations, etc. We do not know if he would have loved PIXAR. It is very doubftul he would have.

I wish Mort hadn't been cancelled. The concept was very intriguing and different for Disney. It had a lot of potential.
