ABCNews/People.com's "Best in Film" TV Special

Post by Escapay »

ABCNews and People.com's Best in Film: What are the Greatest Films of All Time?
  • ABCNews and People.com's "Best in Film" survey is now closed. Thank you for taking part in our vote for the best English-language films ever made.

The list of films -- from comedies to action flicks to musicals and more -- was compiled from well-known "best-of" surveys and awards lists. The final 10 films in each category were selected by an elite panel of film industry experts, including dozens of well-known actors, producers, directors and critics, which we then put to you in a popular vote.

The results will be revealed during a special two-hour ABC News broadcast, hosted by Tom Bergeron and Cynthia McFadden, on March 22 at 9 p.m. ET. Until then, you may watch clips from the films. Stay tuned for more information on the broadcast. We promise you will see the movies like you've never seen them before.

Making this a separate post rather than in the first one.

There was a brief segment about the greatest on-screen kisses at the end of "Nightline" tonight, where they revealed #5 to #2. This was the first I heard of this special, so I headed over to the website to see the other categories and films you could vote on. Unsurprising choices, as the usual mainstays of such lists and categories were present (Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, Bogey & Bacall, etc.) in the Hollywood-heavy list. It's certainly not indicative of filmmaking as a whole (the decennial "Sight & Sound" poll is usually the best list to consult, and as polarizing as AFI's lists are, they're quite good too), but I'm sure will make for an enjoyable and fluffy two-hour special tomorrow night.

Anyway, here's what I'd pick, although I already know that "greatest on-screen kiss" is not what the voters picked.

What's the greatest film of all time?
Casablanca (1942)

What's the best comedy film of all time?
Duck Soup (1933)

What's the best sci-fi film of all time?
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

What's the best animated film of all time?
Fantasia (1940)

What's the best movie musical of all time?
Singin' in the Rain (1942)

What's the best suspense or thriller film of all time?
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

What's the best action film of all time?
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Which on-screen couple is most romantic of all time?
Spencer Tracy & Katharine Hepburn
or
Gregory Peck & Audrey Hepburn

Who is the greatest film character of all time?
Indiana Jones in the Indiana Jones films

What's the greatest line ever delivered of all time?
"Here's looking at you, kid." (Casablanca, 1942)

What's the best horror film of all time?
Frankenstein (1931)

What's the best Western film of all time?
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

What's the best chick flick of all time?
Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

What's the best political or historical film of all time?
12 Angry Men (1957)

What's the greatest on-screen kiss of all time?
From Here to Eternity (1953)

Thanks for letting us know about this. No way I would have known about it otherwise and it sounds like it's right up my alley, even if the predetermined choices and general public polling both give me pause. It is kind of cool, though, that 4 Pixar films are included for the Best Animated Feature poll and that, excluding the Toy Story sequels, they're 4 of what I'd call the studio's 5 best.

Well, if we have to choose from just the movies on their list...

What's the greatest film of all time?
Casablanca (1942)
The Godfather (1972)

So sue me, it's like Sophie's Choice here

What's the best comedy film of all time?
Some Like It Hot (1959)

Not really my choice for best comedy but it's the best on the list

What's the best sci-fi film of all time?
The Matrix (1999)

Now to explain my answer. I love Alien but it feels more horror/suspense to me, I love E.T. but it feels more like a coming of age story, I love Star Wars but it feels more like an adventure film and I love Terminator 2 but it feels more like a strait up action flick. The Matrix is the only one where the sci-fi part of it seems to over power it's other elements. Now what I'd really like to know is why Avatar is on here and not The Day the Earth Stood Still, which would've been my pick for best sci-fi?

What's the best animated film of all time?
The Incredibles (2004)

It's not the best but given the list we had to choose from. I personally love Aladdin

What's the best movie musical of all time?
Singin' in the Rain (1942)

No hesitation on this one

What's the best suspense or thriller film of all time?
Jaws (1975)
Psycho (1960)
Pulp Fiction (1994)

Three of the greatest films of all time but I'm not sure how they got categorized together. They're just too different.

What's the best action film of all time?
Die Hard (1988)

I consider Die Hard more of a strait up action movie than Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is also more adventure

Which on-screen couple is most romantic of all time?
Gregory Peck & Audrey Hepburn

I guess, even though I'm a huge Powell/Loy fan

Who is the greatest film character of all time?
The Little Tramp in the Charlie Chaplin films

Honestly, this was probably the hardest choice to make from the whole list. All great choices but Chaplin is just universally appealing playing the everyman.

What's the greatest line ever delivered of all time?
"Here's looking at you, kid." (Casablanca, 1942)

Except it's the whole damn speech.

What's the best horror film of all time?
The Exorcist (1973)

Here's when this genre thing gets weird. Shouldn't Invasion of the Body Snatchers be on the sci-fi list and couldn't Alien fit in here?

What's the best Western film of all time?
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

You see, I wouldn't even consider The Treasure of the Sierra Madre a western.

What's the best chick flick of all time?
All About Eve (1950)

It's probably the one I've watched the most.

What's the best political or historical film of all time?
12 Angry Men (1957)

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington in a close second.

What's the greatest on-screen kiss of all time?
From Here to Eternity (1953)

How about best sex scene?

Anyways, defining movies by genre is always tricky. Many of these movies I feel were miscategorized.

There are some very strange choices here and I'm sure to be furious as I watch the countdowns tonight, which means this should be a perfect replacement for the AFI 100 Years specials (which just disappeared without the slightest acknowledgment or explanation by AFI). Here are my picks in each category, most of which were painful to determine.

What's the greatest film of all time?
Citizen Kane (1941)
The Wizard of Oz (1939)*

*I'm torn between these two, as I always am when declaring "the greatest film of all time." While it might be nice to see Oz win out over the more frequently recognized Kane, I'll be very happy with either.

What's the best comedy film of all time?
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)*

*Let me note that I think The Graduate is by far the greatest film of the ten listed in this category, but I don't consider it a comedy. I also have much love for quite a few of these ten and several of them are probably better films, but Holy Grail is funny in such a unique way and so rarely given its due that I'd be really thrilled if it won.

What's the best sci-fi film of all time?
Star Wars (1977)

What's the best animated film of all time?
The Lion King (1994)*

*But I wouldn't mind WALL•E winning... or any of the Disney titles, really. Just no Shrek.

What's the best movie musical of all time?
The Wizard of Oz (1939)

What's the best suspense or thriller film of all time?
Psycho (1960)

What's the best action film of all time?
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)*

*This set of ten is really stretching the idea of "action film." Of the ten listed, I consider the four best to be Raiders, Rings, Knight, and Gladiator... of those, I'm just picking the one that feels closest to a classic "action film."

Which on-screen couple is most romantic of all time?
Humphrey Bogart & Ingrid Bergman

Who is the greatest film character of all time?
Vito Corleone in the Godfather films

What's the greatest line ever delivered of all time?
"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." (Gone with The Wind, 1939)

What's the best horror film of all time?
Halloween (1978)

What's the best Western film of all time?
Unforgiven (1992)

What's the best chick flick of all time?
All About Eve (1950)*

*I would never describe All About Eve as a "chick flick," but whatever.

What's the best political or historical film of all time?
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

What's the greatest on-screen kiss of all time?
Lady and the Tramp (1955)

jpanimation - we didn't have many of the same picks but I'm in agreement with most of your comments. I especially like your breakdown of the sci-fi category! :thumb:

Out of the lists, what I'd pick:

What's the greatest film of all time?
Citizen Kane (1941)

What's the best comedy film of all time?
Airplane! (1980)

What's the best sci-fi film of all time?
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

* I'd consider The Day the Earth Stood Still superior.

What's the best animated film of all time?
Fantasia (1940)

* I still say Dumbo's the best.

What's the best movie musical of all time?
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

* I really need to re-watch My Fair Lady, but until I do, I have to go with Rocky.

What's the best suspense or thriller film of all time?
Pulp Fiction (1994)

* Boy, is this list crap of what?!?! Pulp Fiction is an edgy comedy, and Shining, Rosemary's Baby, and Silence of the Lambs are horror films. But I had to choose one and Pulp Fiction is superior to Jaws and Psycho in my book.

What's the best action film of all time?
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Which on-screen couple is most romantic of all time?
Spencer Tracy & Katharine Hepburn

Who is the greatest film character of all time?
Dr. Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs

What's the greatest line ever delivered of all time?
"I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!" (Network, 1976)

What's the best horror film of all time?
Carrie (1976)

* Rosemary's Baby, Silence of the Lambs, and Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are superior, but for some reason- they weren't listed.

What's the best Western film of all time?
* Can't vote.

What's the best chick flick of all time?
Pretty Woman (1990)

* I chose this because it's a little insulting to call All About Eve and Breakfast at Tiffany's chick flicks.

What's the best political or historical film of all time?
* Can't vote, haven't seen any of those films.

What's the greatest on-screen kiss of all time?
* Can't vote. I've only seen 3 of the movies and A) I don't remember Hot's or Bride's kiss, and B) I wasn't impressed by Lady and the Tramp's kiss enough to vote.

I find the category of Best Chick Flick to be sexist, disrespectful, and unprofessional.

I mean there's no Best Testosterone Flick category.

So, they mentioned 10 categories at the start and at this rate, that is all they'll get to. So what 5 categories are they going to exclude? Or are they just going to run through them quickly or something? Starting to think Animation will be one of them.

For those who missed the show or want to see the choices in the 5 categories left out:
http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/Bes ... d=12214551

I am not really surprised but am pretty pleased with the results. Gives us a more mainstream, entertaining take on cinema to counter AFI's longer-sighted, more historical, artistic choices. Knew that things like Citizen Kane and 2001 were going to be left out. Was especially happy that Animation's #1 and 2 were just as I wanted. Clearly, Star Wars should have been among the Top 10 overall choices. And Back to the Future and Ghostbusters were slighted in the Sci-Fi and Comedy categories, respectively.

I wondered about that, but you see, the fact that they call that an Action Flick and the others Chick Flicks. I don't know if Romance Flicks would be better, but seriously, it's sexist and unprofessional.

Thanks, Luke. I was intermittantly falling asleep through half of the special (not because it was boring, but just out of sheer exhaustion for the entire day), so I missed a few here and there.

Thanks for that. :D I had this playing in the background, but I was too busy to watch.

I'm glad with the animation category (though maybe B&tB and TLK should be switched). Toy Story is easily a modern classic, so I agree with the placing--and I'm so glad Snow White wasn't given number one out of a pity vote. Agreed with the sci-fi, too, but I'm surprised E.T. wasn't number one. And how did Grease make number two for musicals? I enjoy it, but...number 2? Really? It was weird seeing LotR on the best action film, too--but The Dark Knight was brilliant, so no complaints. Forrest Gump should have been number 4 at best. Scarlet, Bond, and Hannibal all > Forrest Gump.

Wouldn't "chick flick" basically be the same as "romance"? Either way, I'm surprised The Notebook won. Tbh, all the films in that category are weird choices.

I'm a little late to the party but I will list my favorites from many of the categories as well as personal favorites not listed. I will skip a few categories because since my interest is fairly limited to specific genres, there are many genres I know too little about to have an informed opinion.

What's the greatest film of all time?

Of the one's listed, I vote:

The Wizard of Oz (1939)
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Personal faves not listed:

Dumbo (animation)
Babe (live action)

What's the best sci-fi film of all time?

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Star Wars (1977)

ET would probably be my choice even among those not listed.

What's the best animated film of all time?

My choice: Dumbo

My order of choice of those listed:

Pinocchio (1940) (my second or third favorite anyway)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Fantasia (1940)
Up (2009)
Toy Story (1995)
The Lion King (1994)
The Incredibles (2004)
Shrek (2001)
WALL-E (2008)

What's the best movie musical of all time?

My choice: Mary Poppins, but my top 3 on this list are up there as well:

The Wizard of Oz (1939)
The Sound of Music (1965)
My Fair Lady (1964)

What's the best action film of all time?

The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Easy choice for me there, although ironically, it's the STORY and the FANTASY, and NOT the action, that really draws me into LOTR. Not to mention the great characters, setting, and soundtrack.... I've never been into "action" just for the sake of "action", actually!

Who is the greatest film character of all time?

Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz

Out of those listed, how could I go against my beloved Oz?

What's the greatest line ever delivered of all time?

"...May the Force be with you." (Star Wars, 1977)

My choice would have been "That'll do, pig", from Babe.

Or "There's no place like home", from Wizard of Oz.

Or "Charlie, don't forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he always wanted".

"What happened?"

"He lived Happily Ever After"

From Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

What's the greatest on-screen kiss of all time?

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

Gotta go with the doggies! ;)
"Feed the birds, tuppence a bag"- Mary Poppins
"How high does the sycamore grow? If you cut it down, then you'll never know"- Pocahontas
"I do not make films primarily for children. I make them for the child in all of us, whether he be six or sixty. Call the child innocence." - Walt Disney

I saw the special last night. I thought it was so-so. Some of the choices were agreeable some were not (Avatar should have been replaced with 2001 or Alien and Singin in the Rain should have been #1 in the musical category). What I was confused about is why Pulp Fiction was included in the Suspence category.

Completely agreed! (Yes, it *can* happen!)
jpanimation wrote:How about best sex scene?
Halle Berry & Billy Bob Thornton in Monster's Ball? Or Naomi Watts & Laura Harring in Mullholland Drive?

I don't agree with all nominees and the categorizing, but anyway, here goes... Hardest categories to pick: Western & action; easiest: horror & sci-fi because I have seen few.

What's the greatest film of all time?
The Godfather (1972)

What's the best comedy film of all time?
This one is not really a comedy but more of a blend of drama and humor
The Graduate (1967)

What's the best sci-fi film of all time?
The Matrix (1999)

What's the best animated film of all time?
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

What's the best movie musical of all time?
Write-in: Mary Poppins
The Wizard of Oz (1939)

What's the best suspense or thriller film of all time?
Write-in: Rear Window
Pulp Fiction (1994)

What's the best action film of all time?
Should have been in the category 'war films'
Apocalypse Now (1979)

Which on-screen couple is most romantic of all time?
Humphrey Bogart & Ingrid Bergman

Who is the greatest film character of all time?
The Little Tramp in the Charlie Chaplin films

What's the greatest line ever delivered of all time?
"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." (Gone with The Wind, 1939)

What's the best horror film of all time?
The Exorcist (1973)

What's the best Western film of all time?
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

What's the best chick flick of all time?
I hate how these timeless classics are being degraded by the term 'chick flick'
Thelma & Louise (1991)

What's the best political or historical film of all time?
Write-in: JFK
12 Angry Men (1957)

What's the greatest on-screen kiss of all time?
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
