Actually, REASON AND EMOTION was my least favorite of the "From the Vaults" shorts. The other three I liked, but I didn't care for REASON AND EMOTION. The following paragraph about the cartoon in DVD Talk's review for the FRONT LINES set sums up my thoughts exactly:
Reason and Emotion is an example of faulty propaganda linked with bad psychology. People's personalities are crudely divided into an emotional caveman and a rational milquetoast to demonstrate how Hitlerian rhetoric can sway the masses. Intelligence never comes into the picture and human life is presented as an equally simplistic struggle between good and bad demons. Emotion is always irresponsible, but Reason doesn't seem too bright either. Fear, conformity, and selfish greed are also strong reasons why masses fall behind popular demagogues, and this cartoon's caricatures of its audience as idiot cavemen are kind of insulting. The "emotional" girl is food-crazy and her "reasonable" is a prissy librarian stereotype.

I thought Reason and Emotion was a very accurate portrayal and not propaganda at all. As I said before, it could easily be used today to represent the world situation of the "reasonable" knowing that terrorism needs to be confronted and the "emotional" being afraid and being pacifist.

Something about "Reason and Emotion" rubbed me the wrong way, too. It was interesting, but unsettling and not in the way it was meant to be.

Exactly. I do think it's interesting, but... something about it doesn't click with me. That's why I like that review excerpt, because it points out that intelligence isn't a factor in the form of psychology used in the film.

I'm not about to start a political discussion in this thread, but I will say that I think that the portrayals were not accurate but just mere stereotypes. Reason does not always equal smart and emotion does not always equal stupid. There is the factor of intelligence, no matter how emotional or reasonal you may be.

At first I wasn't sure about Reason and Emotion but I ended up liking the short. Oh and getting back to the Defense Against Invasion cartoon. I know one way to prevent against disease, how about not letting some mangy dog in the doctors office.

You're right in that emotion doesnt always equal stupid and same for reason, but in the context of the situation of WWII and today, I think it's a fair and "reasonable" portrayal. :)

Well "Reason and Emotion" is PROPAGANDA so it's a more than reasonable propaganda film. It was undoubtably 100% successful and 100% of what was intended. But it is not an accurate reflection of Nazi Germany. Like all good propaganda it is based on the facts, but skewed. No individual or state can be painted in such emotionally primative statements.

The actual rise of Nazi Germany is an interesting story, and is perhaps more relevant today than ever before, given the world situation at present.

This was a 1940's wartime propaganda short, not a doctorate analysis of psychology. As such, expect some bending of the truth, omissions, and a slanted POV that looks to take jabs at the Nazis.

I guess I should get all riled up that ducks can't really talk, and there would be no way the Army would allow Donald to be a soldier. That's just crazy!

Well, Sully. Rnrlesnar's comment made it sound like he did think it was a documentary, which of course it isn't and never was supposed to be (like I pointed out).

Never did I say it was a documentary, and I don't appreciate you trying to put words in my mouth. I'm not going to have another fight with you over politics. However, I stand by my opinion that Reason and Emotion is entirely relevant today and represents an accurate portrayal the different mind sets of people today when facing the war on terror.

Recently watched most of Disc 1 and I found that I liked a lot of it more than I expected - especially the Donald Duck shorts with Donald & Pete in the army. Those were hilarious! I especially loved:

"The Vanishing Private"
"Fall Out; Fall In"
"The Old Army Game"
"Commando Duck"

What part of my original post don't you understand? All I'm saying is that I think reasonable people want to confront terrorism by going direct to the source and that's what is being done today. People who let their emotions of fear and cowardice would rather run away from the problem or let someone else do it and hope things work out, such as John Kerry supporters :P (had to throw that one in) Now some of you may feel its the complete opposite, thats fine. Your opinion even though you're still wrong

As for the prod, don't make me shine it up real nice, turn that sum b***h sidways and stick it up your candy a$$. Though the gay penguin may enjoy that :D

Well someone can't take a joke. Anyway, being popular on a Disney movie message board has never really been on my list of goals to strive for.

I honestly didn't mean any harm, sorry you took it that way. The whole thing with turning the prod side ways..... is a catch phrase "The Rock" used when he was in WWE. As for the penguin, I don't know what the meaning of that is supposed to be, but you can expect flack for that one :)
