Not quite. She could never be in more of a decline than she is now. A few years ago I would have to agree with you. But like I said, I would never use her as a role model for my grandkids. When she went off the deep end and shaved her head, and had all those problems with the law, and her family tried to make out like she was just misunderstood, K. Fed tried to get the kids, these are things that I wouldn't want to use as examples of a good family life. Especially when her little sister has had a child out of wedlock. No, I don't think that I could support anything that Britney Spears does today or stands for. She is now just a over-hyped tramp, and I will never buy any of her music again.

I don't even see how it's debatable; Britney Spears is an icon, forever and always.

Do me a favor and look up the word - "ICON" in the dictionary and think about how little it applies to Ms. Spears. She is just an overused whore and all of you who like her act are just her pimps.

I think the premise of how people see Britney Spears as an icon has to deal with how old we are. I'm guess that most of the people on here are in their teens and early twenties, so when we were growing up, Britney was a huge icon. She was like the Beatles, Queen, Journey, Aerosmith, Elvis and countless others. We usually stick with what we've grown up with, so the feelings that she is an icon still stays with us. I'm 18 and grew up with Britney Spears (along with N*Sync, The Backstreet Boys and Christina Aguilera). I guess, to me, she was an icon of the 90s (along with the others I listed). I understand that you are older, and you might see different musical icons, but from where we're standing, it makes sense to see Britney Spears as an icon. Icons and role models, in my opinion, are different. An icon is someone of the age who transcends through the years. A role model is someone you actually want to look up to. I don't view Britney Spears as a role model, but I would classify her as an icon.

Growing up with somebody has a great impact in who you respect, but an icon is somebody that completely represents something and Britney is definitely a pop icon regardless of how old you are. Britney Spears was the biggest selling female artist of the last decade (with numerous achievements and records above others in the industry), that's not just someone riding on a high, that's someone with true staying power. As for "overhyped", there are other artists today that are "overhyped" such as Lady GaGa and Justin Bieber, when with Spears we've already seen what she can do and that she is capable of showing us even more when we think she's done her best. May be she isn't one you like, but Britney Spears is a pop icon. And I really don't understand why anybody would call her a whore, but either way it has little to do with her being a true star.

I say if Madonna got a Glee episode, Britney definitely could pull one off.

dvdjunkie wrote: I can't believe that they want to do a show dedicated to Britney Spears. She has had her 15 minutes of fame, and is the not the role-model that I would want my grandkids to be like.

"Glee" is still not one of my favorite shows, but I will drop in once in a while and see what is going on. It's just I can't remember ever going to school and being able to jump into a song and dance without missing a beat. That stuff is so bad.

"Camp Rock The Final Jam" was so bad about doing that.

Well... musicals usually do that (the Camp Rocks are terrible, though).

Guys, I bought my Complete First Season from Amazon, but since I live in Brazil, I won't receive it until the end of the month.
Now I'm just curious... does the Season 1 Vol 2 dvd comes with a slipcover? Just curiosity! Thanks!

There's no doubt that Britney Spears is an icon (and I agree with TheSequelofDisney that icon and role model are not the same thing--singer and role model are not the same thing). But at the same time I don't think she's a great "artist" either, or even a great singer.

I just hope Glee doesn't treat Britney the same way they did Madonna. I like Britney okay, and she has had staying power, but none of her songs have been phenomenal. She's no Elton John or even a Christina Aguilera. She's more like a Katy Perry--someone who can't really sing well and who's music isn't outstanding but occasionally catchy, who's survived mostly on performance and shock value. She'll never have a problem career-wise, because she cultivated a humongous group of fans while she (and they) were young. But one could argue that the same will be for Miley Cyrus. That doesn't make her great though.

(Btw, just imo, but Lady Gaga has proven more in one CD to me than Britney has her whole career. Not that I don't like Britney, I love quite a few of her songs, but I personally don't think she has artistic value)
And I really don't understand why anybody would call her a whore
Well... I could understand. I don't hate Britney Spears though. She's had difficulty living the lifestyle attached to being rich and famous, so I do have a lot of sympathy for her as a person.

Woa der grumpy pants! First off, I think it's clear to everyone here that you dislike Glee. So theres no need for anymore postings about that, the last 4 were sufficient enough. And those crazy comments about Brit were just rude and unnecessary. Hopefully your done with these negative rants and we can continue on with discussing the second season of Glee! Which I'm super pumped for, btw. :)

I almost agree with you completely. True, her songs are never deep or epic as Madonna's, but I really don't think that's what Britney Spears is about. She's a performer, a visual artist; to me putting on a spectacle, and putting it on as well as Britney does is a true form of art. But I don't think her songs are more than just catchy come-and-go radio hits, they are truly memorable; ...Baby One More Time, Toxic, Oops... I Did It Again, I'm a Slave 4 U, Womanizer, all pop-culture defining songs. Though I like her, Katy Perry is nowhere near of being iconic, and Miley Cyrus, I see where you can compare them, but what does she have to say for her career? Party in The U.S.A. and Hannah Montana? I don't see her being much like Britney.

As for Lady GaGa, I like her music, but she hasn't proven herself worthy of her success. All she does is get designers to help her make outlandish costumes (which has been done before by most female pop stars, most predominately Cher), play the piano, and pretend she's this Ghandi/Madonna figure, which she is neither. She puts on a front which people are, much to my surprise, buying it; basically she says how cool she is and people go for it. She really is not that original, she just takes her stage persona to the streets.

 That's hilarious. Seriously though, Britney gets so much crap on promiscuity when really, when do you ever hear about her sleeping around? We can count her relationships before and after stardom without even using all our fingers. If it wasn't for her crazy marriages and her denial on losing her virginity she wouldn't be called a whore by everybody like she does.

Loved it. What a great start to a spectacular season. I’m glad to see that success hasn't messed up the show.

I guess with Glee being gone for the past few months, I’ve forgotten how great they sounded. They were great in both the “Empire State of Mind” and the Lady Gaga/Beyonce song. The show introduced Sam and Charice’s character nicely. I was wondering how they were going to bring in new characters without, as Rachel said, screwing up “the dynamic.” Charice played her part better than I expected--she looked really young--and Chord Overstreet has my expectations high (I was worried that he looked too perfect from some of his photos, but he looks normal on the show).

I’m pumped for the Britney episode now.

Btw, I loved the Sue commercial. “What are animals good for except to make you feel guilty for how good they taste?”

Yeah, Audition was pretty awesome. I loved What I Did For Love the most, but the other songs were great as well (even Billionaire, which I actually hate--but Glee made it better). I'm actually much more pumped for Britney/Brittany episode than I originally thought I was. I grew up with Britney and know most of her older songs (at least the famous ones). This is shaping up to be a good year.

I enjoyed it.

Let's see- Charice, girl's got a voice! She's really spectacular. Maybe the arm movements during "Listen" were a little excessive, but I'm not sure whether that was choreography or something she personally brought to the role. Can't wait to see her performances as a part of Vocal Adrenaline.

Not a huge fan of Mike/Tina. Hope it goes back to Artie/Tina soon.

Very little Kurt, Mercedes, and Puck. I'm sure I'm forgetting other's, but then again, Glee is such a huge ensemble, I'd imagine it would be problematic getting everybody in the episode.

Loved Beiste. Seems like a much stronger character than Tanaka. Even loved Schue and Sylvester teaming up together. Awesome.

Oh, and of course Sam... Well, I do hope that rumor about him is true. And, loved Billionaire.

Awesome episode. Love all the stuff that is going to shake up this season. I personally was tired of Tina, but, now the drama with her & Mike. Spices it up a bit :D Sunshine was awesome, can't wait to see more of her.
Also, can't wait for Cheyenne Jackson to sing!!

Mike had two lines! That's like double what he had all last season!

Love Beiste and Sunshine. Hell I even like Sam and I really didn't think I was going to.

The episode needed more Puck.

Bitchy Quinn is back. No more lovey dovey stuff! Santana/Quinn fight was awesome.

I want a Brittany Doll!

Billionaire, I Did It For Love and Telephone were all awesome. Empire State of Mind felt forced. Listen was god, but too over theatrical.

"I have never had balls in my mouth" should have ended with a pan to Kurt. It would have been epic.

This episode was absolutely fantastic. A great start to a hopefully great season. I loved Beiste! It seems like this season is going to be interesting with her and Sue's relationship. The new characters were introduced very well into the show, it was part of the plotline, and not just a 'okay, we're here' kind of thing. And I LOVED the Telephone song- I didn't know a Lady Gaga song could sound that good!

I could not be happier that Glee is back. I love this show! Let's see...

I loved Sam and Bieste. Sam is sooo hott and I'm definitely looking forward to what he'll do this season. While we're continuously hearing different things about what his story lines will entail, I did find it odd that Kurt wasn't in his scene with all the guys.... Anyway, they did an amazing job with Bieste. At the beginning, you feel for Sue and Shue, but then you really feel for her by the end. Excellent characterization.

I was really dissapointed with "Listen." Not that it was sung badly, but the lip-synching was just abysmal. Did she (or perhaps the editors) even try to match up with her recording? And it came off (to the point of annoyance) that she was lip-synching to it WAAAAAY more emotionally than she initially sang it for the recording.

Compared to that, "What I Did For Love" was a wonderful breath of fresh air. I've been craving a Rachel ballad all summer, and this really hit the spot!

So excited for the next episode!

I feel like I was the only gleek underwhelmed by the premiere.

Not to say it was bad, but it could have been better. For such a "family" they certainly had more scenes apart than together in the episode.

Rachel's pre-occupation with her own fame was downright horrible in this episode. And she did it in the guise of protecting her glee family too, which makes it worse. Then again, maybe I'm biased because Sunshine is Filipino. Asians do tend to stick together.

Loved Bieste. She should prove to be an interesting character in the season, simply because of the potential in the teachers' dynamic on the show. Especially after the mishandled addition (and subsequent absence) of Molly Shannon late in the season last year. Is Shannon even going to be back?

Felt bad for Artie, but at the same time, I don't blame Tina for dumping him. Halo marathons over a girl? Honestly.

I like Bitchy Quinn, but at the same time, it's making me miss the fragile hormones-a-go-go Quinn.

Brittany, Kurt, Mercedes, and Puck didn't have enough to do. Such is the sacrifice in a 40-odd minute show.

Can't wait for the Rocky Horror episode on October 26.
lord-of-sith wrote:Rachel balled
I think you mean ballad. Unless Rachel did something Sam didn't. :P

Speaking of Sam, he seems a bit bland, but then again, it was his first episode. Didn't care for "Billionaire" the first time I heard it, and don't really care for the Glee-ified version either. It was hilarious that Finn discovered him the way Will did last year. But I hope it doesn't become a running joke in the series (that someone discovers a singing football player in the locker room showers).
