Sunlight and Sex: could they be connected
Sorry if this is already answered.
So, I'm just watching this documentary called "The 11th Hour" and they get to a part where we start getting-really-technological as a society, pre-1800. up until about then, we generally used the amount of sun we get in a year for food, energy, etc. But we find pockets of ancient sunlight within ground resources, like oil and such. They go on to state that the population hits 1 billion. by 1930, we are 2 billion, and by 1960, the third billion is reached. now, we are 6 billion global. we're creating food, clothing, etc. we're making all sorts of things with this Ancient Sunlight that was buried so long ago.
Food. this gave me a thought.....are we actually getting more hormones from what we eat vs. 200 years ago?

Have you been partaking in recreational pharmaceutical substances??
I still don't see any connection between sunlight and sex, and the "pockets of Ancient Sunlight" stuff really throws me...
On to the last part of your original question, about hormones.
Yes, we are getting more hormones in our foods (or just the meat, I'm not 100% sure.) That doesn't have much to do with sex or sunlight, though. Meat producers often use hormones in their stock to increase size, like steroids. I don't know whether farmers do something similar with crops or not.
The hormones in the meat can cause things like earlier onset of puberty, increased breast size in men, and so on.

200 years ago, meat was not served every day. It was usually a rich person's food or a special occasion food. Today, people can have meat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
200 years ago, most people were laborers. Whatever they ate they worked off anyway. Today, more people have desk jobs and machines to do labor for them.
200 years ago, medicine was primitive compared to today's "modern" medicine. They used leeches and herbs. Today, you can get an appendectomy at noon and leave by dinner time.
200 years ago, middle age was considered to be the mid-30s. Today, middle age has been off-set by about 25 years.
200 years ago, sex was for procreation and not recreation. They had sex to have kids that would grow up and tend to the farm. Today, it's more likely that getting pregnant an accident rather than intentional.
It doesn't have to do with ancient sunlight. Cause that ancient sunlight existed thousands of years ago, back when there were only thousands of people on the planet.
All it is, really, is that humans are finding ways to live longer, work less, and have more fun.

Really? Not that it's something I've thought of much before, but I would've figured that they'd be doing it a lot back in the day...it's not like there were as many entertainment options back then...Escapay wrote:200 years ago, sex was for procreation and not recreation. Yes, Amy, you are right, and while Escapay is still also right, it is more that people had sex especially to reproduce, but simultaneously they did it because they loved doing it. Doing it for pleasure was more hidden back then though, for religious reasons. And of course people still tried not to have babies, there was early forms of (attempts at) contraceptives, and, I heard, (attempts at) abortion.

Oh, Amy!
Also, consider miscarriages were a lot more common 200 years ago, and a lot of children died at a very young age.
