It's not Disney, but the company producing it looks like it has a very good track record- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_Title_Films
I've always wanted to see a big, lavish, period piece version of The Little Mermaid, and I hope this film can deliver. Whenever I think of a live-action version of The Little Mermaid, I think of my copy of the book's cover-

Ahhhh! I'm so excited! I hope this isn't a bust!

Dang. I wanted Joe Wright to direct a live-action version of Sleeping Beauty (and suggested it here). Oh well.
Then again, if Pride & Prejudice and Atonement are any indication, Wright's version of Little Mermaid will be amazing. I hope this means Keira Knightley gets the title role.

Disneyreport.com had a link to an article about this film, and prior to reading the article, I was kind of mad at my computer screen, thinking that there's already been live-action movies of 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, and Alice in Wonderland, not to mention the upcoming Cinderella film, and then the live-action remakes to live-action films. Not that I dislike the remakes that I've seen, because I don't, but I still find them unnecessary. I mean, I'd rather see the time, effort, and money go into something that we haven't seen before from Disney... So I'm thrilled that this isn't Disney.

A live-action Little Mermaid? Don't really know what to think of that.
Makes me remember those awful Sunday-afternoon movies they used to show in Holland like 10 years ago. Most of them were German productions.
I did like the Horror version of Snow White though, with Sigourney Weaver as the Queen and Monica Keena as Snow White...

A good film in its own right--but I doubt "better."ichabod wrote:Might not have the mass appeal, but could still be a better film.rodis wrote:I doubt another "Little Mermaid" film could have a mass appeal even close to the Disney version.
Regardless, I am looking forward to this.

Listening to most often lately:

Live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid on the way
This version will have the same ending as the book. In 1975 an animated version of this story came out that also had the same ending as the book (it came out in 1978 in the USA).

Director Joe Wright (Atonement, The Soloist) has announced that he plans to develop a live-action feature of The Little Mermaid for Working Title films. Wright’s adaptation will be based on Hans Christian Anderson’s original fairy tale, not the popular Disney version with its wisecracking Jamaican crabs and all that. The director reportedly found inspiration in a recent children’s theatre production that featured puppets—a staging that was reportedly meant for kids “aged 5 and over.”
Given that, it’s unclear whether Wright’s version will include some of the more violent, depressing aspects of Anderson’s original tale, such as the suddenly amphibious Little Mermaid discovering that every step feels like walking on sharp swords and causes her feet to “bleed terribly,” or when she briefly considers slaying the prince who spurned her and dousing her legs in his blood in order to become fully human. Given our modern preoccupation with reviving all the gritty, despairing elements in our fairy tales, however, we certainly wouldn’t rule it out.
