It'd be awesome if Disney decided to release a complete score + the most significant alternate songs etc. in one complete soundtrack. Beauty and the Beast is among their most beloved musicals and not only because of the songs but because of Menken's exceptional score (it really is amazing how better he became at scoring between TLM and BatB), so I'm sure it'd be a hit. So far there are only audio rips and that Menken/Ashman collection to satisfy our needs. :(

Beauty and the Beast

Post by Disney Duster »

Two other troublesome things...

Okay, if Belle promised to the Beast she would come back, then why was the Beast so sad waiting for her and thought she wouldn't come? If Belle is a kind, good, honest person who would keep her word, and the Beast knows and loves her inside, then wouldn't he know or expect her to come back?

More than that, why does he say he is setting her free? Or rather, why is he still keeping her prisoner. This bothered me a lot as a kid! His keeping people prisoner was part of his beastliness, wasn't it? Should he have said she can do as she pleases long ago? And I don't see how Belle would accept him keeping her prisoner. When she rescued him, it seemed like she only went back to help him, and she only stayed with him as his friend, and to teach him stuff and be kind to him. It looked like her choice to go back, meaning it would be her choice to be there, and thus her choice to be able to leave is she so chose. I don't think there's much keeping her there, I don't see why she would take that, and if he is still keeping her prisoner, why would she still like him?

And she is concerned about her father way later on at a convenient time...if she and the Beast were friends, I think she would ask if she could see her father sooner than that, and that he wouldn't still be keeping her prisoner, of course.

It's because they have beautiful minds, silly! But, yes, Belle is a physically lovely nerd. So that's a bonus.

Beauty and the Beast Discussion

Post by Disney Duster »

Hey, did you know that the song "Something There" wasn't originally going to be in the film?

This was no Katzenburg "Part of that World" problem, this was actually added because the film needed more songs! How can a great, developing song, seemingly integral have been added it so much after the fact?!

Apparently "Human Again" was much more in the film than this one, perhaps it's excise lead to needing another song?

So I thought, what would have happened in place of the song? The beats couldn't just save her and then...they dance, in love! Well, maybe they could in some other fairy tales, but that would be weird with these characters. So I am guessing the library, and the reading by fire place, and the snowball fighting, must have happened...but without the song?

By the by, for the relationship this film does show us, there is also a good amount of mystery, too. Mostly concerning the Beast, but when he becomes a Prince, he is still mysteriously intrigueing. At least through most of the happy ending, it's like wow, this guy (though lots a critics found him becoming boring...)

Belle exploring the West Wing was one of my favorite parts of the film as a kid, so mysterious, but the music was a big part of what made it cool.

But does anyone know...was some of that "exploring the West Wing" music stock music? I swear I had heard that music before, in commercials and stuff...if it was, it's one case where use of stock music was a good, good thing.

"Something There" was meant to replace "Human Again." The scenes of them falling in love were going to be interspersed throughout "Human Again," and the song would have covered several months of interaction and the passage of time. When they couldn't get that to work with the plot, they swapped it out for the new song, "Something There." Once they saw that "Human Again" was possible, as they got it to work in the Broadway version, they decided their reasons for cutting it were no longer valid, and so they reinstated it.

I don't think that any of the score for that part was made up of stock music, but it seems like it may have been inspired somewhat by the Aquarium movement from Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals, which has indeed been used countless times in advertising or general background music, and also features as part of the score of Epcot's "Impressions de France" show. It has a sense of fragility and mystery to it, which is probably why Menken decided to pay homage to it at this point in the film.

SAINT-SAËNS:

MENKEN (the bit I think you're referring to starts around 0:38 ):

Wonderlicious, that was it! I never thought I'd find it, at least so soon! What genius memory or searching! Thank you!

The West Wing video (while showing a beautiful score and what an art form animated films are) also made me remember something.

When I was little I also wondered if the reason Belle knew the Prince was the Beast and said "It is you!" is because she saw his torn portrait in the room, and figured out (either at that moment, or earlier) that that was the Beast. I think I even read one Disney book adaptation that gave that as the reason she recognized him. You feel like Belle is figuring out something there.

It was just one possible reason, but I like the idea she can tell it is him by the way he looks at her and she sees his soul better. I think that's what they intended.

And I swear Belle has greenish brown (hazel?) eyes sometimes and dark brown ones other times...

OF COURSE! I'm a manly man. I make womminz go to the kitchen and make me a sammich and as well as put them in their place. If they disobey, i give them the backhand. I give them orgasm that they never experience before. I hunt down people who oppose, me, THE MAN.

Some people have a problem with the servants getting placed under a spell when it was the Prince who was bad.

What does everyone think of this:

The servants were turned into enchanted objects because, just like the prince was made a beast for being beastly, they were acting like objects who just served him and didn't do anything? As in they didn't do anything to stop him or make him better or maybe even show him the kind of love he needed? They weren't the best examples of humans, so they were made inhuman. They acted as only objects that serve him, so they turned into that.

The enchantress is still not the nicest most understanding figure, but usually beings that powerful are mysterious that way about their judgement!

And nobody thinks Gaston is introduced by stepping out of a shadow just like the Beast is, to show how they are both beastly (until the Beast turns nice)?

Maybe this information will revive everyone's love of BatB!

I'm too lazy to see if anyone posted about BatB coming on ABC Family over the Thanksgiving holiday, but if anyone has DirecTV HD, you might've noticed that the movie was in it's original theatrical colors! Just like the sing-along (which was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen on screen, hands down) and I was pretty flipping excited. All the dark hues and gah, I nearly died with happiness.

So, my friends who don't mind watching our favorite Disney films on TV, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST IS COMING ON TONIGHT! Disney Channel showed a commercial late last night so I had to keep my squeals of glee down to a minimum, but it's still pretty epic! Anyway, GUESS WHAT ELSE IS COMING ON? (hint, look at my icon) YES! Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas is coming on tomorrow night on Disney Channel as part of their Christmas line-up! YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW EXCITED I AM! I've pulled out my Belle doll, I'm playing the soundtrack (Enchanted Christmas, of course), and my phone will soon have The Enchanted Christmas poster as it's wallpaper. Let's see if Enchanted Christmas is in true HD! I'll keep you guys updated! RECORD THE SEQUEL IF YOU DON'T OWN IT or if you don't like YouTube. Isn't it funny that Disney Channel is showing BatB: EC even though Disney has yet to re-release it? (Which is totally stupid if you ask me.) I flipping love that movie! My favorite Disney direct-to-video sequel, hands down. Okay, enough ranting! Here are the times just in case you forget!

Beauty and the Beast on Disney Channel TONIGHT at 8 pm Eastern (5pm Pacific if you're on the west coast and have the Disney Channel east coast channel!)
Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas on Disney Channel TOMORROW NIGHT at 8 pm Eastern (5 pm Pacific if you're on the west coast and have the Disney Channel east coast channel!)

Sadly I don't think they'll come on again, so make sure you watch them!

I have my dvd recorder set for Enchanted Christmas (I love my DVD recorder, its NOT a DVR, its a dvd recorder with a hard drive). I have never seen Enchanted Christmas and you are right, Princess_Syndrome, it will probably never air again (sort of how Pocahontas aired one Saturday like 18 months ago and then Disney acted like they have never heard of that movie and continue to push drivel like HSM!

And since Belle is my FAVORITE Princess, I will watch it on Disney Channel tonight, too. Already own the Blu Ray from this year and the dvd from like 8 years ago.
Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

I'm sure it was because the Enchantress didn't want the servants to be able to serve him. She didn't just want to cripple his looks, she wanted him to suffer big-time. No more tea for you! Or, if he wants it, it'll take 20 minutes longer than usual.

Sometimes, Disney is really dumb. And Beauty in the Beast is just a wholly dumb film.
