By the way, the price is only $27.50 at Best Buy online, and they will do price matching on their brick-and-mortar stores. :o

Apparently Best Buy is getting extremely limited amounts, mine only had two on the shelf and I was lucky to get mine because, I saw someone else with it in their hands while shopping. So if you want to get that great price (27.50) and during the first week, you have to hurry. It may already be too late...

Woah, thanks for the info. I was thinking about holding off until the next paycheck but darted straight to the store after reading your post. They only had one set left so I really lucked out!

Escapay wrote:A: This is the only thing I have a problem with, and one I'll likely always regret in the official DVD release.

B: I don't want to watch "Daria" on YouTube, and the torrents for them are low-quality WMV or MPEG files. I want to watch "Daria" on DVD.
So do I. But the spirit of the show will never be the same without the music and if I have to go to YouTube to get that, I will.

Anyway, to depress even more, here's a reminder to all just how many songs got the shaft on this set:

http://outpost-daria.com/song_list_1.html (IGNORE the 3 Doors Down mention on Episode 1, that song didn't come out until like 1999-2000)
http://outpost-daria.com/song_list_2.html
http://outpost-daria.com/song_list_3.html
http://outpost-daria.com/song_list_4.html
http://outpost-daria.com/song_list_5.html

I shouldn't have bothered with anything after Season 4, because just like with The Real World: New Orleans, with every Mtv show after 1999, the music choices for their shows became completely irrelevant and I didn't even recognize the artists. But especially for the first season, those songs are SO important - that's why YouTube is a blessing.

There's no watching the Misery Chick episode without "Pearl" by Love and Rockets. Or "Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M. in The Road Worrier. There are dozens more examples of songs this show can't do without. Ginuwine's "Tell Me Do U Wanna" in Too Cute (plays on the "calf implants" video that plays in Dr. Shar's office) and for Season 2, Alice in Chains' "Rooster" on The Daria Hunter. Dozens upon dozens more examples. Each song in the characters' fantasies of college in College Bored (Garbage's "Queer," The Cardigans' "Carnival," Beck's "Where It's At," Space's "The Female of the Species," and LL Cool J's "Ain't Nobody"). All those songs at Britney's party in The Invitation. Actually, I should check YouTube now to see if Eedwardgrey2 has the original versions of those first 3 episodes.

Well... I have the ep's on VHS at least. Recorded from Mtv. So... you want Looking Back in Annoyance:

I'm with Escapay. It sucks that they couldn't strike a deal with the songs and a lot was compromised to make this set happen, but this is likely the ONLY time we will ever get the series on DVD, especially when it includes the entire series and the two movies .

I believe some scenes were song specific, like the scene in which Daria, Jane, Trent and Jesse are on the highway and its spoofing REM's Everybody Hurts video. Trent says that you can't read people's mind, then Daria looks at the screen while the words "Thank God" appear.

Thanks once again, I'm especially glad now that the Best Buy price has gone back up to $44.99 already! I almost wonder if somebody screwed something up. Amazon actually dropped down to $27.99 yesterday (I'm guessing because of Best Buy's price) but is back to $44.99 again today. I would have expected the sale price to last a week, but wow, only one day?

As for the music, for the most part I don't mind so much. I mean, it would be really nice to have (it's an especially great era for music in my opinion and works well with the series) but I can't say it's the reason I fell in love with the show. In fact I first became familiar with the series through their initial VHS releases, which didn't have the music either. Much of it was incidental anyway in having the animation completed before songs were even chosen, although a handful of episodes like Road Worrier admittedly have hurt scenes (yeah, I'm talking about REM's "Everybody Hurts" being replaced with something I've never heard before, it just kills the whole sequence). But so much music really would have been enormously expensive to get the rights to for home video (which I'm sure was not even a consideration when it was being produced) so I don't think we can blame them here.

Anyway, I'm mostly interested in the characters, situations, and animation. I was absolutely giddy while watching Pierced last night as I simply adore Daria's awkwardness around Trent. :D

I would have been a lot happier with this set if they had just removed almost all of the music, period. And only paid for the stuff that was played during party scenes and the R.E.M. track. I guess Viacom doesn't own any music companies of their own.

You know what's really funny about all this though? I have Lionsgate's Will & Grace season 3 and they actually played songs by Madonna and Duran Duran on the 80's episode. Also the Power Station song, "Some Like it Hot." I don't think they got those for free. So I know it's possible for some companies to get certain songs.

Jonathan Prince said, about music replacements on TV shows:

"If they can't promise that the music is part of the DVD, you're going to have pissed-off fans. Music is so critical to shows, it would be like watching 90210 without Luke."

He couldn't be more on the money.

I might break down later and buy the set. But I won't be doing it for more than $25. So, I'll check eBay next year and see what's up. Maybe even try an auction or two.

I do wish they could have reached some kind of compromise with the music, like somehow being able to keep "Everybody Hurts" (as already mentioned many times now) and "Story of a Girl" (which played over the credits of the final episode) for example. The set includes an insert explaining that the music has been changed, that the show couldn't be released on DVD unless it was (and of course that it's prevented any release for years now). More from the insert:
Glenn Eishler (the show creator) wrote:To put it bluntly, replacing the music had to be done. Does that mean this box set is compromised? Season I Daria would have said, "Yes." Season V Daria would have said, "Shut up and pass the remote." Let the raging begin.
I'm still glad I have the set in my hands. It makes a nice addition to the bootlegs I've had my hands on for years.

I love the design that guy did, but seriously... 1 disc per episode? That's a joke.

I'd sooner buy a bootleg series with original music than this set.

Maybe the guy's still a little bitter that nothing came from the meeting he had with the guys from MTV and went for extremes? Or maybe he already had this mentality and that's why nothing came of the meeting . . .
Lazario wrote:I'd sooner buy a bootleg series with original music than this set.
I think I spent about twice as much on the bootleg than I did on this set. And yeah, even though it was the equivalent to a bad VHS recording, I'd say it was plenty worth it at the time. But now? I'd probably prefer a torrent over a bootleg.

Wow I wish they had made the dvd like that! Now that is a Daria dvd set. But I am fine with what we got (though I didnt know there was a Quinn miniseries)

As far as music, ya it sucks but that was the 90s for you. Thats why shows nowadays already have agreements in place to let them use the music for dvds so they dont have these types of issues.

It doesn't. The Quinn mini-series was made up by the artists (he even did animatics and 3D animation for it!).

That's what I was thinking too. Daria came out the year DVD debuted. On the VHS's for episodes 1 through 7, there are clips promoting The Real World: Miami, the 1996 season. So someone at the company knew this show would be a good VHS property when it was being made. And yet - they never even thought to make a deal like that?!?! So... I want to pull my hair out and go: "ARG!!!" like Charlie Brown. A needless hassle that could have probably been easily avoided.
