Watched what could be one of this year's (2009) Oscar contenders for Best Picture of the Year - The Hurt Locker - Blu-ray. Kathryn Bigelow directed this marvelous insight into the horrors of war in Afghanistan, and the dangers our men are facing each day. Without getting preachy, she tells a remarkable story about five men that touches the hearts of everyone who watches this movie. Can highly recommend this for those who like this type of film, and want to see what all the hoop-la is about. Good watch.

I just watched The Lake House. I got it from the library, and the summary on the back did sound a little confusing...and the film was. I liked it, but it was a bit confusing. It was cute and sweet- those are the words that I thought of (besides confusing!) when I was watching it. If you like love stories, then I guess I'd recommend watching it at least once, especially if you like Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock, but it's not one that I really care to watch again. B+/B

From Netflix, I got The Ant Bully, and I can say that the film is good, and the special features enough to warrant a cheap Amazon purchase.

9-I'll be frank. this is the reason I don't make blind-buys. The concept is decent, the Short film is good, but the movie's a plain snore-fest. they should've just given wide-distribution to the short.

Vicky Christina Barcelona (2008)

A handsome Spaniard has a lot of sex with a lot of beautiful girls and they're all aware of his hopping from one girl to another and they're okay with this, and even participate in threesomes with the guy and other girls. Until the two female protoganists can't put up with his crazy ex-wife anymore and leave.

Still 5 out of 5 stars, because the leading roles were played by Scarlett Johansson and Penélope Cruz, and because that minute-long kiss they shared were totally worth the other 96 minutes. :D

Strangers on a Train - I thought this was another good film from Alfred Hitchcock. The beginning and ending scenes were the best parts.

James and the Giant Peach - This movie is so underrated it's criminal. This is one movie that I could watch a "making-of" several hours long, breaking it down shot by shot! I have absolutely no idea how they did some of those effects! And here is another good Randy Newman score.... No, not as good as TPatF, but he did do a very good job here. Especially on the songs "My Name is James," "That's the Life for Me," and "Love." The acting is very good, too, because all of the voices are so perfect for their respective characters. I do wonder if Paul Terry has been in anything else since then, or if he went on to have some kind of career, because he was a positively charming child actor. And Susan Sarandon's Miss Spider was a standout, IMO. Of course, that character also has one of my favorite designs in the film: placing two eyeballs in each socket was a brilliant move, and much more aesthetically pleasing than multiple eye socket pairs. Of course, the complicated armatures for almost every character (the amount of coordination of every character's several limbs was simply perfect, and came off without a hitch) add points for me! There are a few moments where I seriously question the logic of the story, though. Of course, then I just remind myself that it's based on a Roald Dahl novel, and it's OK again. But still.... robotic sharks? The aunts driving under the Atlantic Ocean? James, Miss Spider and Centipede breathing under water? The whole concept of the Rhino? It simply boggles the mind. And what on earth are the random objects floating around during the "Love" sequence!? Oh well, it's still an excellent film! :P

Cinderella (1950)- 8/10
I actually hadn't realized how much I liked Cinderella. I haven't seen it in a couple of years, but it all clicked back. It was great, and I really felt for poor Cindy during her hectic morning. My favorite sequences are Sing Sweet Nightingale, The Work Song, and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo! My only complaints are the slight overuse of the mice. I felt like Gus+Jaq vs. Lucifer scenes kind of dragged, they should've shortened it and had more Cinderella time! The King and the Duke are hilarious whenever they discuss an issue, my favorite line being: THE WHOLE THING WAS A PLOT! The only song I didn't like too much was So This is Love, I want to, but I just don't think it feels very Disney-ish. Anyway, Lady Tremaine is one evil person. I could've stabbed her when she locked Cindy up. But I don't realize how the mice could've gotten up the attic stairs in about 30 seconds. Poor Prince Charming. He has, what, 30 words? And is it just me, or do the people chasing her from getting away from the palace look like they're trying to kill our beloved heroine? :? I also happened to catch the Beast's rose when Lady Tremaine sees her humming as she goes upstairs.

Now as for the restoration in the PE, I really had no complaints. I don't see how excessively bright it is, it seems pretty normal to me. When I watched the Documentaries, they used the original restoration for clips during them, and they look very grainy to me. I prefer the PE, though it might just be me. Meanwhile, this has got to be the worst PE in the history of Platinum Editions. What do these extras have to do with Cinderella? :? Come on, ESPN Cinderella stories?! Not even a decent diverting game. There was some good featurettes (like the deleted songs). I guess Peter Pan could tie with it, but at least it had relating bonus features. I don't see what people have against poor Lion King, it did have good bonus features, but sadly a confusing menu.

Snow Buddies (2008)- 2/10
What were they thinking? This abomination of a story had me falling asleep as my sister watched eagerly. The only reward? Occasional cuteness and some clever dialouge, but otherwise, :headshake: . To make matters worse, 5 puppies DIED in the making of this movie. :x  :(

The Little Princess (1939)- 6/10
This is the one with Shirley Temple. It was ok, but ended rather abruptly. I think Sara comes off as rather annoying than kind-hearted as in the book. I was surprised at some cuts and additions, but overall it was ok.

House of Bones For a Syfy TV movie, it was good. Of course, had it been released theatrically, it would have bombed. The only familiar face in this movie was the star, Charisma Carpenter, who played the Psychic Heather. There were some minor scares, but what I really enjoyed about this movie was the characters and decent plot.

Open Graves The only reason I watched this was because it had Eliza Dushku. Even she couldn't save this terrible, terrible film. It was not scary at all. It was even disgusting at times. Save yourself and don't see this. Ever.

Up in the Air. I have to say this is in my top five movies. It is funny but dramatic at the same time. The acting is superb and I really love this movie a lot. It is being nominated for best picture at the Oscars so I really hope it wins because it is truly beautiful.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs-Better than I thought it'd be. Some moments were downright bizarre. (man-eating roast chickens?) Likeable movie, but nothing special.

My thoughts exactly.

Anyway, I watched The Odd Couple (1968) Saturday night. I thought it was a decent comedy with a few good scenes and lines, but there were some parts where it dragged.

Lady and the Tramp Still a wonderful movie and a great love story. But I don't know if it gives really healthy adivse in pet-caring (if you give a puppy as present in a box, put some holes in it for air, or better do not put in in a box at all) Is it good for dogs to eat spaghetti, I wonder? (though I love that spaghetti eating scene)

The diving bell and the Butterfly Very intense drama based on the true story of a man who suffers a massive brain hemmorhage and finds himself totally paralised except for his eyes, but still with his full senses and memories intact. The movie for the greater part shows the world as seen from his "locked-in" view. He learns to communicate by blinking his one functioning eye when the right letter is mentioned, and thus is capable to write a book in this condition before he dies. 10/10

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl - The best of the three so far. Jonny's Jack has to be one of the most brilliant characters to hit the silver screen. Kudos to Zimmer and his soundtrack too, very catchy!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - Watching it only days apart from the first, the movie fits much more in context of this universe, but it still angers me to no end that you only view "half" a movie. Seriously, who's decision was that??

The Princess and the Frog - Finally got around to seeing it and, well, disappointed. I wish Menken were a part of this. The outcome, I'm sure, would've been completely different.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - Finished my PotC viewing today. Can't say I feel any of the sequels recaptured the magic of the first, but this one sure came close. Some great scenes (the mocking of Jones's line "Do you fear death?", Barbossa and Jack's many quarrels etc). Too bad the running time is about half an hour too much.

And now for something completely different (1971)

A string of excellent Monty Puthon sketches. It's absurd, silly, and sometimes idiotic, but at the same time brilliant. It's been a while since I had such a good laugh.

The Incredibles - I love this movie, but it always leaves me hungry for me. It's sad, really. This is (aside from Toy Story), the only Pixar film that ever begged for a sequel. Toy Story got not one, but two. And even Cars is getting one! But The Incredibles really feels like it needs one. I just want to see the kids in action more, honestly. And I wonder: How could Jack-Jack utilize his incredible array of powers despite his age? And, what would the children use as their Super names? I for one feel that Ultraviolet would be an interesting name for Violet.

Fantasia - I feel such powerful emotions every time I watch this film. The animation, music, special effects, color scheme, and everything else, is just exquisite. It's a feast for the eyes and for the ears, and I absolutely love the characterization in some of the scenes. It's very long, but it isn't tedious, it's just so impressive.

The fantastically overrated Avatar. Yes it is probably the most visually stunning movie I've ever seen, but the story is pretty blah. 6/10 at most.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)- 4/10
I loved the new one, but after watching the very first, I feel bored. The film drags on and on and on, with a very confusing beginning, 3 minutes of zooming into stars while dramatic music plays (and no title either!) ,5 minutes of Kirk and Scotty in a space transport looking at the beauty of the Enterprise, and countless waiting. Shave maybe, 35 minutes off this, it could be a better movie. There's almost no character development, and my only satisfication is seeing the Enterprise crew working together, at their respective stations. I love seeing that. It's a very confusing movie in general.
