I wouldn't have minded missing all the short cartoons, and I wouldn't even miss the seven minute 'Princess and the Frog'-segment. But to leave out even art galleries is the lowest!
Too bad this disappointment overshadowed my experience of the film. I hadn't seen it in at least 10 years (probably even more), since I never owneed it on video and didn't have DVD yet when the first Platinum came out. How was the quality of the 2001 print? Can it compare to the new print?

The 2001 print isn't bad at all actually. However the audio in the new Diamond Edition is better IMO. A lot of the static has been cleaned up. I say def get the Platinum Edition DVD, it is worth it, and even get your hands on the Blu-ray. Prices will drop and players will as well. Disney is actually smart with the way they market the Blu-ray's but I do not agree with what they are doing to the Snow White DVD, AT ALL!
Could there be a difference based on regions? I mean, I know that occasionally the international releases and US releases are different, and I'm wondering if there's any chance that the region 1 release will be less dismal....
Of course, it wouldn't surprise me. CURSE YOU, BLU-RAY!!!
Meh, to be honest, the Blu-Ray itself is probably lacking a bit, so I suppose you guys could think positively like that.
As for me, well, I still don't have a Blu-Ray player (and one of my friends has a Blu-Ray player on their laptop ), but I might get the Diamond Edition just for the time being. I'm planning on getting the Blu-Rays of Pinocchio and perhaps Sleeping Beauty this weekend in a BOGOF offer on various Disney titles in the UK that's about to end soon, so I might wait for the next promotion and get Snow White in there too.

It's not about prices, really. I could easily afford a BluRay-player and even a HD-TV. But I simply have no desire to buy them, since I don't need them. I watched this DVD of Snow White on my non-HD television and it looked spectaculair! This is great quality; like the film was made only yesterday!

I think this kind of shenanigans will have the opposite effect; it will putt more people *off* BluRay.

I now own both the 2 disc DVD and the blu-ray combo pack. Thinking of giving the DVD away as a present to someone who don't really care/need highly indepth making-of featurettes.
It's just like the VHS release of Snow White but with higher video quality (that, and you have to change discs half way through).
The audio commentary is fantastic, though. Of course, it's great to hear Walt Disney himself talk extensively about the film. Canemaker also does a good job of providing context and relevant information, mostly about the artists behind Disney. Some commenataries are very lifeless, even dull (Jungle Book, Sleeping Beauty), but this one kept my interest throughout it all.

Well, they proved me wrong! Yesterday, I bought the new 2-disc Snow White DVD. Today, I watched the film and all bonus features. I understand that the US has to wait for an additional seven weeks to get the DVD? Don't hold your breath, people. If you already own the previous DVD, keep your money in your pockets. This is clearly a waste.
I knew, while reading the glowing review on UD for the BluRay, that not all of those features would be present on the DVD. But I didn't think it would be *this* bad. If Disney wanted to promote BluRay this way, they had the opposite effect: now I'm hating BluRay even *more*! Don't put out a 2 disc DVD if everything could have fitted on one disc!

Wow, this is tragic thats why I'm going to get a amazon gift card and buy the old platinum edition and something else, not quite sure yet instead of the new dvd.
Walt Disney always belived in quality, bring the quality back.

Nope.
It won't happen. There are just too many people that are NOT interested in Blu-ray. Over here sales are already going down, and some new films only come out on dvd, because the Blu rays just don't sell.
I just bought the Snowwhite dvd.
I actually prefer the look of the dvd over the Blu Ray which I've seen by a friend.

I know what you mean though, i prefer the postcard with the picture of the Mona Lisa on it that I got at the Louvre giftshop than the actual painting itself hanging on the wall. The colours are nicer on the postcard.

We are talking about the same master of the same film here.
It's not the master that's the problem, it's the format.
The thing is, that if something is perfectly sharp, there is a border that you shouldn't cross.
If you put up the sharpness of a perfectly sharp picture, it looks unnatural and VERY tiring for the eye.
That's the problem with Blu ray.
Some people are unable to see the fact that overly sharp isn't always better/more natural/beautiful.
I am unable to watch a whole film on Blu Ray. I simply get headaches.
Strangely enough I have no problems with images in real life.
It is too unnatural and overly sharp. It has nothing to do with the look of real life anymore. They've gone too far.
This problem is especially bad with animated 2d films.
I can see the master is beautiful. But it looks perfect on dvd.
On Blu ray, it looks so sharp and unnatural, that it BREAKS the film.
But believe what you want to believe, and watch what you like to watch.
I can tell you that the Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio Blu Rays were taken out of the stores here, because they just didn't sell.
I believe a new format only works if it's an acual IMPROVEMENT.
And that's not what Blu ray is.
Yes, there is higher resolution etc, yes, it's high def. But it DOES NOT help the films.
Are you putting up the sharpness of all your perfectly sharp holiday pictures too? To make them look silly and unnatural?

I'm not against Blu-Ray because of... umm... whatever Marky just said.... but I do think it seems unneccessary. I mean, DVD was a thousand times better than VHS. Easy upgrade. But Blu-Ray is really only a tiny bit better than DVD. So, of course, it is much more difficult and pointless to switch over so soon. Maybe in a few years when we're not all bogged down in the recession.
I'm not saying anything negative about Blu fans. But, please, Disney, give us old-school kids the dignity and love that we need, too!
i agree with the idea that HD is more of a luxury than a necessity. DVD is fine for most occasions. However I don't think the reason why people arent upgrading is because the leap in quality in minimal.
blu-ray is only a 'tiny bit' better than dvd is you're watching it on a tiny ass tv.
come the days when 40inch tv is a minimal standard, people won't be wanting dvds any longer.
But what about portable DVD players? That's the only thing that I use to watch my DVDs because I could watch those movies anywhere. As far as I know, there's no such thing as a portable Blu-ray player.
I'm going to get the Snow White DVD since I don't own the movie. Unlike most people, I care more about the movie itself than the bonus features. The only bonus features that would intrest me would be a "making of" documentary and some deleted songs or scenes.
I'm with Goliath. I can afford blu ray but I choose not to buy into it. I have a 50" hi def tv which my dvds look absolutely great on. I'm so happy that I've got the original Snow White Platinum. I won't be buying the new dvd and I don't plan on ever going blu ray. Several dvds that I've purchased lately I've gone with the single disc because even though I love special features with about 800 dvds I rarely get to watch them any more except when I first buy a dvd so if the 2 disc is merely a couple featurettes + a totally useless digital copy I'll buy the one disc and save some money. If Disney would load the features on a second disc I'd keep spending the extra $7-$8+ for them. They are just ticking people off by trying to shove blu ray down their throats. The way I feel after seeing how pathetic the new dvd of Snow White is I wouldn't take a blu ray player for FREE. The difference isn't that much. DVD's people were raving about a few years ago they're trashing now because blu ray is 1% better. Give me a break.
