I need help...
I need help...
Hey,
I need some help with something really important...
I'm auditioning to a Performing Arts school, and I need to send in an audition tape, and I need to sing two songs as part of it; one ballad and one upbeat song. I have a ballad, but not an upbeat song. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them!
Thanks,
-Jan<3

Do you want something more Broadway-ish, or more contemporary? "Why Should I Worry" is a great upbeat song...or pretty much everything on the Hercules soundtrack, or the Tarzan soundtrack, but if you want something more Broadway-ish, then maybe "I Just Can't Wait to Be King", or really any of the upbeat songs from 1989-1996 DACs.
Maybe you don't want to sing a Disney song, but I don't know what kind of music you like...what kind of music do you like?

These are some songs that pop into my head at once...
Showtunes:
Under the Sea (from The Little Mermaid)
Good-morning Baltimore (from Hairspray)
Superstar (from Jesus Christ Superstar)
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah (from Song of the South)
Don't Rain on my Parade (from Funny Girl)
Ease On Down the Road (from The Wiz)
Pop/rock/contemporary:
Take Back the City - Snow Patrol
LDN - Lily Allen
Shiny Happy People - REM
Bones - The Killers
To be honest, I'm sure that quite a lot of Disney songs and pop-tunes would fit the bill. I'm also sure that the songs that I listed are all on YouTube, so if you're not too familiar with some of them, you could have a listen there.

I would avoid doing anything from "Wicked" as your up-tempo song, not only because of my personal bias, but because I will bet you that whoever is watching / listening to your audition has heard twenty other people that day try to do something from "Wicked", and you'll want to stand out more. Ditto for pretty much anything from "Legally Blonde". I would also argue that any song from a Disney movie is going to feel a little unprofessional / overdone. I think if you try something from a legitimate Broadway show, you'll look more well-versed and accomplished.
Try something maybe a little more out there, like...
"I Have Confidence" (The Sound of Music)
"Just Leave Everything To Me" (Hello, Dolly!) *This song is only in the movie, so finding sheet music might be harder*
"Been a Long Day" (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) *If you do it as a woman singing all three parts, not a woman mediating a conversation*
I second "Don't Rain on My Parade" and maybe "Good Morning, Baltimore" but only if you can really sock it out of the park.

"Ta ta ta taaaa! Look at me... I'm a snowman! I'm gonna go stand on someone's lawn if I don't get something to do around here pretty soon!"

I don't know if you can audition with these, but I'd say "I'm a Believer" and for more show-tuney, "Beauty and the Beast."
Other examples would include "You just Take My Breath Away", "Under Pressure", and for a more unusual choice, "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Of course those aren't from musicals(except BatB), but they're nice songs, nonetheless.

THAT is GREAT song.Jan<3 wrote:It's a classical song my singing teacher gave to me, I think it's called 'The Water Is Wide'... or something, haha

As for an upbeat song, the second half of "Proud Mary" could be a good choice, though you'd probably need a band, a couple showgirls, and Tina Turner.

Reading Brenden's post made me realize that he is right in the fact that most of the girls there will be singing a Wicked song. Legally Blonde isn't as popular as Wicked, but I guess I'd still try to stray away from it.
"Someday" from The Wedding Singer: The Musical is a good choice, and a great upbeat song, sung by the awesomely talented Laura Benanti.
"Take Me or Leave Me" from RENT is a possible option. Rent is an extremely popular show, but I don't really think too many people will be singing that particular song. Please, please, do NOT sing "Seasons of Love."
Maybe "Show Me" from My Fair Lady, or "I Could Have Danced All Night."
"The Girl in 14G" if you can really nail it.
"Out of My Dreams" from Oklahoma.
"Glitter and Be Gay" from Candide.
