What's your favorite piece of rare Disney media you own?

Post by skippy »

I seem to have a special knack for purchasing something from bootleggers, or making a trade with a fellow collector, for something prior to it being released via Disney Treasures.

My favorite episode of the anthology series was "The Golden Horseshoe Revue", which was released as treasure.

Then I fell in love with the 4 Zorro episodes from the anthology series.
We may be seeing them in some sort of treasure, although I'm anticapting the movies and 4 episodes to take up two volumes.

I purchased used VHS copies of the WWoD video tape collection from a few years ago, and several of those episodes have now popped up via movie club.

Right now, I've been desperately trying to get as many episodes of the original MMC as I can get my hands on.

I would have to say, I'm loving watching the mouseketeers ! And I'm also hoping that my current infatuation with it, will allow me to get some more stuff by them via the Disney company.

What are your favorite rarities?

I had "Victory Thru Airpower" and "Der Fuhrer's Face" on VHS (and still do somewhere) because both were broadcast on UK TV in the early 90s (I am tempted to say Xmas 1992) as part of a Disney wartime documentary program that I recorded. As we know, they took almost 15 years after that to be officially released on DVD.

"Song of the South" rather comes to mind for similar reasons...

Aside from that, I suppose I could consider the Rescue Ranger cels I own. How do you define media?

I guess media could be considered audio, video, or books or animation cels.

Not with that attitude you won't! :P

I'll say that my favorite rare media that I have is my bootleg DVD of Song of the South. It's not the best quality, but I'm glad that I have it!

Mine is a dvd of the original Dutch dub of Sleeping Beauty.
This is one of the best dubs ever done.
The new one is horrific and has nothing to do with the American version.
The new one is the only one that ever appeared on dvd.

So people have started this illegal businesses and are selling dvd's with the film and the original Dutch version. The demand is huge.
Because this is what the audiences want.

So I'm really happy with my copy :)

Ooooh, I just thought of another few that I get happy when I see on the shelf.

I picked up the Texas John Slaughter movie adaptations of the anthology series episodes, "Geronimo's Revenge", "Stampede at Bitter Creek", and "Gunfight at Sandoval", at a video store that was getting rid of it's VHS tapes for 50 cents a piece.

I have all 17 of the individual anthology episodes, but for some reason I enjoy these movies.

My favorite rare piece of Disney media is "Disneyland Showtime" with E.J. Peaker, The Osmonds, and Kurt Russel. It's on a poor quality old vhs tape, but I enjoy it.

I have the 1974 Disney record of a Christmas Carol, which inspired the 1983 featurette. :)

Really? I have a VERY old VHS with a Dutch dub of Sleeping Beauty, and it's the same as the one on the most recent DVD. So maybe your DVD has a wrong dub? I noticed a similar thing with One Hundred and One Dalmatians: I have the original Dutch dub on VHS; later they released a new VHS/DVD with a new horrible dub. But on the most recent 2-disc DVD, the original VHS-dub is in place again.

What's sad is, they have replaced the original Dutch dub of The Aristocats with Wieteke van Dort and Louis Neefs with a new dub. Why they do this, is beyond me.

Ditto. The end credits on our tape is cut off, though, with (of all things) Zenon.

I don't have much media rarities aside from "Disneyland Showtime", and perhaps several "House of Mouse" and "Lilo and Stitch" TV episodes, as well as a couple specials here and there ("Disney Unwrapped", "WDW 25th Anniversary", the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom). I don't count the Disney DVDs or VHSes as rarities because they are (or were) mass-produced and readily available (this also includes bootlegs of Song of the South ;) ). Perhaps the only DVD I have that can really be considered a rarity is a watermarked screener copy of The Fox and the Hound 2, which came in a CD jewel case and is labeled "Friends II". Oh yeah, and the store-exclusive DVDs for POTC: Dead Man's Chest, POTC: At World's End, Enchanted, Cars, Ratatouille, and the sneak peek disc for Bolt.

I've also got some castmember rarities that are likely of little $$$ value, though they do have a lot of sentimental value.

WDW College Program bus schedules circa 2005 and 2006.

A few copies of "Eyes & Ears", the WDW-castmember-exclusive newsletter.

Worn-out and written-in Tell-A-Cast brochures for most of the weeks I was a member of the Mouse House.

The special "Live with Regis and Kelly" Tell-A-Cast that they gave out the week they were broadcasting in 2005.

A "Happiest Celebration on Earth" pin that only castmembers received and we weren't allowed to trade them. I used to have two, but accidentally left one on a costume when I returned it after a shift.

A "Happiest Celebration on Earth" Pocket Guide.

A wrapper from MK ODF's first batch of the new Mickey's Premium Ice Cream Sandwich. They were given a totally new recipe and made by Disney and Nestle instead of an outside company that used to make them. All of ODF got to sample the new sandwiches before we started selling them (we had to finish selling off the old batches), and I was able to get two sandwiches, carefully unwrapping it, and cleaning out any melted ice cream, thus preserving the wrapper. Oh, and the sandwich was pretty good too. I preferred the older version, but what can you do?

And finally...

Tinker Bell's autograph, with some drawn-in pixie dust to boot! I was finishing up my shift right as "Wishes" was starting, and by the time I got inside the tunnels, there was Tink and her little entourage (several costuming CM's) in the tunnels as well, having finished her descent and on her way back to Costuming on a pargo. Knowing that kind of opportunity would likely never come again, I whipped out my book and asked if I could get an autograph.

Like Escapay, I also have lots (and lots) of cast member exclusive stuff from both North American parks and WDI in Glendale as well as a visitors pass to the Disney Studio lot in Burbank from last August and a visitors pass to Pixar in Emeryville from last May (saw WALL-E a bit early).

If by media, we are including things used to make films, I have a model sheet from The Brave Little Tailor, two model sheets and two sketches used in the production of The Black Cauldron, and a bag of treasure from the set of The Curse of the Black Pearl.

As far as rare DVDs, I have a "copy" of Song of the South, lots of rare theme park DVDs, and Dream on Silly Dreamer.

I have a large collection of Disney books, some of which are long out of print and sell for a lot on Ebay.

In DVD rarities that I have I would consider....my entire collection of every wave so far of the Walt Disney Treasures DVD Collection..

But probably I am willing to say this book is my most precious Disney item

http://www.amazon.com/Art-Walt-Disney-C ... 0810919621

The reason I love this book so much is because....it is the same one that I am holding in my avatar on this site....Roy E. Disney gave me this book and autographed it to me....which reminds me he even sent when it was released The Lion King DVD to me for free....I had already boughten the collector's set of The Lion King at wal-mart at midnight.......but a month later after its release I received a package from Fed Ex and it was a sealed copy of The Lion King....

and another thing I have that I treasure...

I had bought the Aladdin PE Gift set with the illustrations...well back in October of this year I heard Gilbert Gottfried was going to pefrom at a Casino not to far from where I am...so after the show I got him to autograph the illustration of Iaago as found in character drawings in the gift set of Aladdin....

So those are my most precious Disney memorabilia that I own :D

I have all of the Gallegher stories, HORSE WITHOUT A HEAD, KILROY, "Run, Appaloosa, Run" and "The Horse With the Flying Tail," which I recorded off the Disney Channel (back when they showed REAL Disney programming <g>).

I also have WALT DISNEY: ONE MAN'S DREAM, which I taped the night it was broadcast.

The old Sleeping beauty tape you are talking about is from 1996.
That is when the redub was done and that's the one on the current dvd.
The original Dutch version was done in 1959 and was released on vhs in 1986.

I agree, the original Dutch dub of 101 dalmatians is fantastic. The redubbed this in the late 90's too and that one is really unacceptable.
But they made a mistake with the most recent DVD version.
One of the emloyees went into the archives and picked out the original version, and that one got cleaned up and was put on the 2007 dvd and the new version was forgotten.
Disney Netherlands admitted they made a mistake, but the audience thinks this is fantastic because the old dub is much better anyway.
Finally there's justice. So let's hope this disgusting 90's dub stays in the trash can forever. I had hoped that they would make the same mistake with Sleeping Beauty, but unfortunately this lame, cheap 90's dub that has nothing to with the American version is on the dvd/blu ray.

I will post 2 clips here of the original Sleeping Beauty dub and the 90's dub (which is on the dvd and probably the version you know).

Here you can read about the "mistake" they made by putting the original Dutch 101 Dalmatians dub on the recent dvd.

But actually it's a wonderful gift, as the audience loves it and they sell much more copies.

Oh wow. I don't even speak or understand Dutch, but the old version sounds better, especially for the gift songs. In the old version, you can distinctly hear each voice in the chorus and there's a very warm and soothing quality to their voices. The new version just sounded...very echoey and cluttered. Though perhaps that has more to do with it being on YouTube? Or is it really that bad?
