But they shouldn't put TS and TS2 back in the vault just because they MIGHT have 3D versions in 2 years. And not everyone will get to see them in 3D. I am not sure If I will.......

When are these films being Vaulted?

Is it January 31, 2009, like Aladdin and Cinderella were in 2008?

I just got the Ultimate Toy Box set of Toy Story so I'm covered on those
(seriously, there's nothing new on the new set unless you like DTS... I don't even have a surround system so I couldn't care less)

Peter Pan I'll get soon, and I might avoid The Little Mermaid due to its cropping and editing. That Limited Issue DVD was fine except for the lack of any special features.

Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were vaulted in May 2003 (in all forms - single-disc, two-movie, and Ultimate Toy Box) before being re-introduced in September and December 2005, respectively.

They have a valid reason to. They are re-releasing both movies to theaters in 3-D prior to the 3-D premier of Toy Story 3. I'm guessing that 6 months later, all three will be released to Blu-Ray and DVD and hopefully there will be a 6 disc box set on both formats with all three films.

Little Mermaid 1,2 and 3 are going into the vault. Tinkerbell isn't because there are other Tink movies on the way. Plus it just came out for the first time. However, Peter Pan and Neverland are going back in. Disney just decided to package Tink with those two so they could make more $.

So I've never really been too put off by the Disney Vault Policy. I always thought it was stupid, but since my library, local Movie Gallery, and Wal-Mart all have a good stock of Disney movies (for free rent, pay rent, or purchase) it never mattered. There's still DVDs of "Dinosaur", "Atlantis: The Lost Empire", "Lilo & Stitch", "Fun & Fancy Free" and others readily available for sale at Wal-Mart. So, it never much bothered me. There were some DVDs I would have bought had they been on sale, but to me, the vault policy simply meant that DVDs were going to stop being shipped to stores - not plucked off store shelves! Well, I'm doing a project for my media class that requires Disney DVDs. Between my fairly extensive collection of the classics, renting several from the library/Movie Gallery, and borrowing from friends, I was almost covered. I only had about five left to go. So I called Blockbuster in Dubuque, Iowa. That's the closest city to me in rural Wisconsin - about 30 minutes away. Anyways, the lady treated my like an inept parent:

Me: "Hi, I was looking to see if you had some Disney movies in stock."
Lady: "Okay, but we have stopped providing VHS. They're out of print."
Me: "Yes."
Lady: "...and there's no more full screen, either."
Me: "That's fine, I don't want either. I want DVDs in widescreen only, please."
Lady: [laughs] "Okay, which titles?"
Me: "Well, they're all Disney..."
Lady: "Okay, go..."
Me:"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"
Lady: "Ooh, see, that's part of Disney's vault policy. Every so many years Disney makes us send back their DVDs so that they can hold them off for a couple of years to up the excitement for the next time they release."
Me: "I know how the policy works."
Lady: "Okay, what else..."
Me: "Well all these are in the vault, then."
Lady: "You never know, what are they?"
Me: "Pinocchio."
Lady: "Vault."
Me: "Oliver and Company."
Lady: "Vault."
Me: "Yeah, all of these are vaulted."
Lady: "Well you know you could always try local pawn shops or I go to ebay buy-it-now auctions. I just got that Buzz Lightyear movie on ebay brand new."
Me: "Okay, thanks, I'll try that."

...I am shocked. I had no idea Disney forced (some) movie rental stores to send back DVDs as part of the vault policy. My local Movie Gallery, which is also a chain, has a crap-load of Disney DVDs. Even quadruples on some like 'Lilo'.

Why does Blockbuster get hit with this? Does any other chain, too? And how does Disney stand to make money from this?

If I wanted to buy these DVDs, if I got them at a pawn shop Disney would make zilch. If I bought them at Wal-Mart, they'd make profit from Wal-Mart buying to stock their shelves.

The vault policy was really something I knew about but never cared about because it didn't affect me. Now It's kind of messed up my project. I can't get these films to use them. I went to Netflix to do the free trial to get some of the DVDs. Turns out 'Beauty', 'Snow', and 'Pinnoch' are all un-rentable (obviously because their upcoming re-releases).

Lame. I think Disney loses money from this. If I wanted to buy a DVD, I'd be buying it right now. Instead, if they make me wait six years, they're prolonging the time until they get my $20 by six years, or losing it to an ebay auction.

That's exactly why I've always thought that the whole vault policy is stupid. Plus, it's unfair to those who don't know about it. What if a parent wants to buy a Disney movie for their child, only to find out that it's been "vaulted" and that they won't be able to buy it for about 7 years? I think that's the part that kind of pisses me off.

2 things that could've happened:

1) New Stock - don't forget that Blockbuster also sells new DVDs besides rentals. It's possible the lady misunderstood you and thought you were referring to their new "for sale" DVDs.
2) Rentals - I find that the Blockbusters have very little on the shelves in the way of the animated classics, because... discs get damaged and they can't get a replacement right away, because... the dreaded vault.
I can't see a rental place like Blockbuster sending a rental back to Disney. Is this what they are doing, sending back rentals to Disney when the movie gets vaulted?

Disney doesn't force Blockbuster or anyone else to send back titles. Most video store people I talk to don't know beans about the industry, so I'd take this whole thing with a very small grain of salt. I see out of print titles at Blockbuster, Netflix, Hollywood Video, etc. all the time.

Barbossa - See, I thought that too and at one point said "I'm looking to rent these " and she said "yes, I know, we still send them back". (The conversation in my first post was condensed). So apparently they must, why would she lie or deny me the DVDs?

Rudy Matt - That's why I'm posting this, I'm quite surprised by what happened. Movie Gallery is the most prominent rental chain around me in Wisconsin and I was there a week ago and managed to pick up 'Mermaid', 'Lion', and "Cinderella". So the fact Blockbuster said they were forced to send titles back shocked me.

Go check Netflix now. I only have six DVDs I need now for my media class, and three of them are being refused to me - 'Snow', 'Beauty', and 'Pinnoch'.
