Burbank, Calif. October 8, 2008 - The movies changed forever on April 24, 1924 when a new studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, opened in Hollywood and soon assembled "more stars than there are in the heavens."

Patrick Stewart hosts the debut DVD version of MGM: When the Lion Roars, an enthralling three-part Emmy Award® winning TV series (Best Informational Series) that tells the story of the legendary "Dream Factory's" reign as the movies' class act and entertainment empire.

Louis B. Mayer, Joan Crawford, Stanley Donen, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Jean Harlow, Helen Hayes, Katharine Hepburn, Gene Kelly, Myrna Loy, Mickey Rooney, Dore Schary, Norma Shearer, Elizabeth Taylor, Irving Thalberg, Spencer Tracy and Esther Williams are some of the MGM greats featured in memorable film clips, rare interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.

This is a "mother lode" for film fans, profiling perfectionist moguls, glamorous and charismatic actors, innovative filmmakers and landmark movies of drama, romance, sweeping epic adventure and, of course, singing and dancing.

Thanks for the news, Escapay! I taped that when it first aired on TNT, and watched it many times until the tape was destroyed in a flood a few years ago. Knowing that I'll soon be able to see it again, with pristine DVD picture, made my night.
It may have all started with a Mouse, but the Duck is still better.

I keep hearing a lot of good things about this documentary. I'll break my Blu-Ray only rule and pick this one up since it's probably not one of those titles screaming for high-def, anyway. 2009 is going to be a big year for classic films, including:

King Kong
The Wizard of Oz (!)
Gone with the Wind
North by Northwest
Showboat (all three versions)
A Star is Born (Judy Garland)
Ben-Hur

Along the Blu-Ray releases of this year's SEs:

An American in Paris
Quo Vadis
Gigi

I'm sure there'll be a few more surprises along the way, too (BDs of Singin' in the Rain and Meet Me in St. Louis, please. They look amazing on my That's Entertainment BD set). Kicking 2009 off with this documentary is a pretty cool way to pave the road for the above releases.
