Intrada releases Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend on CD

Post by FrankV »

Wow! Intrada is proud to premier, in cooperation with Walt Disney, complete Jerry Goldsmith original soundtrack from B.W.L. Norton dinosaur adventure starring William Katt, Sean Young, Patrick McGoohan. Goldsmith fashions tuneful idea for "Baby" but anchors with majestic fanfare motif for entire dinosaur family. Incredible action music plays in balance. Highlights are many: lengthy "Base Camp Assault" displays Goldsmith's ability to add layers of suspense, "Dragon Breath" displays penchant for ethnic color, ferocious helicopter "Jump" sequence displays flair for action. Towering above all is propulsive 5/8 meter "Rescue" music with unrelenting ostinato under roaring brass. When entire orchestra suddenly tacets for two bars, leaving percussion to carry thundering rhythm alone, listeners hear one of composer's most exciting riffs. To close score, Goldsmith wraps with resounding, spectacular fanfare for brass. A tour-de-force! Entire score presented in stereo from Disney digital master elements. Generous array of color stills from studio vault plus informative notes from Jeff Bond complete package. Jerry Goldsmith conducts. Intrada Special Collection release limited to 3000 copies!

Thanks for the link!!! I love Intrada :)

I wish they would release Baby...in widescreen here. It was a huge technical success (but I"m not sure about the box office numbers). It had a reairing on the anthology series. I hope that soon they would release a special edition DVD with the following:

New Widescreen Transfer (anamorphic of course)
New 5.1 surround sound
Theatrical Trailer, TV promos, Poster Art
Director/Cast Commentary
Making of Documentary - with Stars Patrick McGoohan, William Katt, and all the rest. This will show a behind the scenes look at how some of the most realistic looking dinosaurs came to the screen and how the whole cast worked together.
Comments from Steven Spielberg - this could be a short interview with Steven, who would give comments about his thoughts on this dinosaur film which came out almost 10 years before his dinosaur films. Where he thought the film succeeded, and where he thought the film failed, and how it influenced his approach to a dinosaur movie
Backstage Disney (or at least an excerpt) - old 80s TV special that includes interviews and shows a puppeteer demonstration with a man inside the metal skeleton of what will become a baby dinosaur and a talk with the director of the film
Michael Eisner introductions - the two opening clips for when the show aired on The Magical World of Disney

That would be a pretty stellar special edition. It would probably all be able to fit onto one disc too! Now with the new soundtrack available, one can only hope that there is renewed interest in this film (not to mention the rare interview Disney got to do with Patrick McGoohan this past year....maybe some of that footage could be used in the documentary!)

About the box-office numers for Baby: 1985 wasn't a very strong year for Disney (business as usual one might have said at the time).
  • The Black Cauldron - $21,288,692
Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend - $14,276,095
    One Magic Christmas - $13,229,514
    Return to Oz - $10,618,813
The Journey of Natty Gann - $9,468,512
    My Science Project - $4,100,000
By comparison, the box-office champ of the year "Back to the Future" made $210 million.

Is there a website you can go to for box office numbers Touchstone84?

p.s. I like your name. I'm a huge Touchstone fan....especially the beginnings of Touchstone. I love all their 80s films. "Outrageous Fortune", "Baby....Secret of the Lost Legend", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", "Hello Again", "Ernest Goes to Camp", "Splash", etc.......can you tell I'm a child of the 80s? lol

The numbers were taken from "the-numbers.com".

When you're born in 1984 and have to chose a unique [positive] Disney-related nickname it made much sense given the sparse options. :)

All of the 1985 Disney movies, as listed in my previous post, are quite interesting and I enjoy seeing them from time to time. I would assume that "One Magic Christmas", given its low-key nature, is the only one of them that could have made a tiny profit.

Have Intrada released any other Disney soundtracks prior to "Baby"?

I know that Intrada also released soundtracks for the TV movies "Eloise at the Plaza" and "Eloise at Christmastime". I think they DID release a few others, but I can't recall at the moment. I'll try and check later.

Given that they have released the soundtrack of one theatrical feature, it could be a sign that more is ahead in this niche market…

In fact a bunch of soundtracks from Disney features have been released by Intrada during the years - among others; Homeward Bound, A Far Off Place, Night Crossing, Honey I Blew Up the Kid ... and so on.
