Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book

Well, I was at my local Borders Books Store and on a whim I picked up this dvd. When I came home I remembered the movie like it was yesterday. I thought that disney should get commended on this disc. This one and Adventures of Huck Finn came out at the same time and are in the same format (becaues Stephen Somers directed them both), and while they are not "special editions", they are not as skimpy on features as most disney dvd releases get. Despite the back of the box, each comes with an extended theatrical trailer for the original release of the film, and a making of that was originally shown on tv (making it's length that of approximately 30 mins), and best of all.......and audio commentary with the director. This is almost unheard of on a catalog title and very well deserved. What's even better, is that these films are presented in widescreen aspect ratio (which i think is a first for both!) and Jungle Book is in beautiful cinemascope capturing the lush Jungle's of India. This seems to be a forgotten film that got a great dvd (it could've had so much more content, but really i'm not complaining with what i've got). and so i thought i'd start this thread complimenting disney on a suprisingly good job well done and inviting others to take a look at this dvd.

does anyone want to back me up on this?

I can second that motion. RKJB is a nice little film. We got so many of them during this period that seem to be forgotten but hopefully await rediscovery by future generations.

The DVD is definitely a nice little edition.

Yeah, these two DVDs are everything I'd want in my favorite live action films of the '90s. Both are in 16:9 widescreen, both have their trailers, both have making-of featurettes. JB has a commentary, too.

I wasn't crazy about Jungle Book as a movie. But I very much enjoyed Huck Finn.

The thing is, the same treatment could be given to any of the live action films from last decade, since most of them had a making-of promo featurette, and all of them had trailers. Commentaries take time and effort, and I don't expect them for all of them; but the 16x9 widescreen treatment is more than most films from last decade got. Besides Newsies, and I guess, the rather lame SE of The Santa Clause.

Love the photography on each, and would have loved it if Disney gave "Tom and Huck" (the superior Twain film, IMO) and all the others similar treatment.

do you think disney would release "a tall tale" like this? i really hope that one comes widescreen (when it comes). i was watching my White Fang 2 dvd tonight and i thought, "why did disney put so much effort into the video and audio transfer of this film (which is gorgeous by the way), and not enough on the original....its prequel". iron will got the same treatment......completely barebones disc, but awesome audio and video quality....supreme transfers. i really need to pick iron will up, i remember that one....maybe disney will release shipwrecked in widescreen too....who knows. alright, well i'm kinda jumpin' around on topics, because it's really really late and i have an orgnic chem lab/lecture exam tomorrow. just thought i'd speculate on future disney dvd formats.

I doubt "Tall Tale" will get special treatment. Seems like Disney doesn't even let the creative talent know they are planning to release a DVD in advance, or give them the possibility to do something special with it. Stephen Sommers did, but outside of the residual checks, I don't think Disney contacts the filmmakers of these catalogue titles.

I was digging through my Disney DVDs again and pulled this one out. Again, after watching it I was so impressed by the treatment Disney gave this DVD. I highly recommend it's purchase to anyone who's building a serious Disney DVD collection.

What I didn't realize at the time I started this thread years ago was that the "making of" included on the Jungle Book disc is actually a television special from 1994 on The Disney Channel.

An edited version of this special later aired with Mickey's Christmas Carol in December of 1994 to promote the release of the film in 1995.

Cool vintage Disney stuff

Seriously, check this disc out. It isn't like the super-complete-uber-ultimate-edition, but it's just such a great presentation of a 1990s Disney movie. I sure wish Disney cared about those films enough to give them to us right on DVD.

I wonder why Disney hasn't rereleased the live-action "The Jungle Book" or both "101 Dalmatians" & "102 Dalmatians"- I'd definitely buy all of those- you'd think that they would release them since the Platinum Editions of the animated originals are out...

My family rented RKTJB when it came on video, and we taped it, I guess from the rental tape, and I think I still have that. I haven't seen it in years, and I'm sure that I'd like it a lot more now than I did back then; I'll probably still prefer the animated film, but I really should give it another chance. Which I would if Disney would rerelease it...!

It was made by a Dutch (?) company Vegahom Europe B.V., which is also listed as the copyright holder. I'm not sure about Disney's involvement in this film, but they did distribute it in several markets outside of the USA. “Return to Oz” is another example of a WDP film where the copyright is not held by Disney.

I just wish it was still in print! Stupid me passed on buying it a few years ago, and haven't been able to find it since!

When will The Rocketeer, White Fang, Hocus Pocus, Homeward Bound, The Three Musketeers, The Mighty Ducks Trilogy, Flubber, and The Straight Story get a halfway-decent DVD release?

It was made by a Dutch (?) company Vegahom Europe B.V., which is also listed as the copyright holder. I was reading that it was a Walt Disney Pictures production in association with Vegahorn Europe B.V.. There were several non-Disney distributors that released the film outside the U.S., but I always assumed that Disney was the main prodction company. It didn't say who held the copyright on it, but I can't imagine anyone but Disney having the copyright to this title, though. That's interesting.

In the Library of Congress Copyright Office records database one can observe that the screenplay, novelization and soundtrack is having only Vegahorn Europe B.V as its sole listed owner. Strangely enough the actual motion picture record cannot be found there. But on my Region 2 Disney DVD Vegahorn Europe B.V is listed as the copyright holder.

My region 1 disc is copyrighted to Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Inc. HHhhhmmm........

I wonder if that "B.V." in the other copyright refers to "Buena Vista". ::shrugs:: It's a thought.

I was looking at the end of the credits, not on the physical disc or package. B.V. actually stands for Besloten Vennootschap - a private limited liability company in the Netherlands.
