National Treasure: Book of Secrets
I liked the first one, and despite people's claims that it's a film you need to leave your brain at the door for, felt it was actually smarter than most action/adventure films today. This sequel looks to be in the same vein, so I'll be checking it out.
What's up with Nicholas Cage's hair, though? It looks awful. He really just needs to cut his hair super short like he used to, then the plugs wouldn't seem as obvious.

I was hoping it'd be PG, like the original.
Oh well,good trailer, so far.

Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets - Discussion/Reviews
Since National Treasure 2 comes out today, and the last official thread on the movie seems to be a speculation thread dating back to June, I figured a new thread was in order for discussion for those who have already seen the film.
Rotten Tomatoes currently has the movie at an embarrassing 31% fresh, so..... yeah.
Be warned that this thread will contain spoilers, so read at your own risk.
Anyway, I just got back from seeing it with a group of friends, and despite what the critics said, I enjoyed it very much. I'll still have to give it a while to sink in, but at the moment, I'm liking it a little more than the original. Maybe that's just the post-movie-excitement talking, but I was certainly entertained.
After Pirates 3 bored me with its complicated-for-no-reason story, it was quite refreshing to have a movie that truly warrants its 2+ hour running time. Honestly, when it ended, I felt like I had only been in the theater for about an hour and a half. Pacing was great.
Those who liked Riley will love him in this movie. Pretty much every single line he has is hilarious (sometimes an occasional joke from him will seem out of place given the current mood of the film, but not to a distracting degree). I also noticed that Ben is much more relaxed and loose in this film than the previous one. There's one long exchange between him and Abigail early on where he makes a huge scene in front of a bunch of tourists (don't worry, it's intentional; he doesn't really freak out.), and it was honestly the funniest part of the whole movie. He takes on a highly exaggerated British accent and starts making fun of the security guard who escorts him off the premises. Everybody in the theater was roaring with laughter.
Oh, and those of you who thought that stealing the Declaration of Independence was too unrealistic for the original will want to avoid this movie. Ben does something that tops that in every way; it makes stealing the declaration sound highly possible by comparison. I got a "Oh, you've gotta be kidding me" feeling that actually took me out of the movie for a few minutes. If you don't already know what happens and would like to, highlight the text below.
In order to figure out one of the puzzle's clues, Ben actually kidnaps the president of the United States. Yep.
There's more action this time around as well, from a very elaborate car chase to about 20-30 minutes of Indiana Jones style trap scenes in the climax. The movie's still all about the mystery and the puzzles, but the action bar's been raised from the previous film.
That's all I can think of right now. I'll probably think of more as I read everybody else's posts, though.
Oh, and the new Goofy short: awesome. It wasn't as hilarious as I had imagined, but it's still pretty darn funny. The audience wasn't too responsive to it, but to be fair, the audience was mostly comprised of people from my high school (like, 1/4 of my senior class was there), and I'm sure you all know how high school kids are. Blah blah, cartoons are for kids, blah blah, start the movie, blah blah. It still got some good laughs, though. Something I've recently noticed: chainsaws are always funny. Honestly, they never fail to get laughs, especially in animation. It's probably the #1 most effective comedic device of this generation, and it definately got the biggest laugh of the whole short (the way Goofy uses it is priceless).
So, what did you guys think about either the movie or the short that accompanied it? Discuss!

I may go to see it for the Goofy short and Narnia trailer, two things which we can be sure won't be included on the DVD (unless, of course, the DVD comes out in May and thus, we'll still see the Narnia trailer).

Thanks, Pasta! I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way about Pirates3! And I'm glad to hear that the pacing for NTBoS is not as dragging as the first!Pasta67 wrote:After Pirates 3 bored me with its complicated-for-no-reason story, it was quite refreshing to have a movie that truly warrants its 2+ hour running time. Thank god. If not for Riley and Abigail, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the first film as much as I did.Pasta67 wrote:Those who liked Riley will love him in this movie. Pretty much every single line he has is hilarious.

I'm so glad they showed the Narnia trailer at the 3:45 PM showing of the movie I went to. And seeing the teaser for Wall*E was a treat as well. The goofy cartoon was a nice unexpected surprise.
I enjoyed the movie immensely. My dad and I went to it - he said it was okay. I felt it had that 'in your seat, seat gripping action packed' type of moments.
Oh, did anyone who has seen Eight Below recognize the president?
My brother had seen the ad for the movie, and he said it looked interesting. I may loan him my National Treasure, the first movie, DVD, to watch.

NT: BoS is the first of the two that I've seen. The sequel easily gave enough background information to introduce the characters without being obtrusive about it.
I don't believe that any of what the group pulled off is possible in reality, but that's not the point. In the movie's world, it all makes sense, and it's all in the spirit of popcorn movie fun.
I agree that the Goofy short, Wall*E trailer, and Prince Caspian trailer are very entertaining.

Saw the movie opening night I loved it as much as the first....However a big downer for me was that the new Goofy short (In AUSTRALIA) was NOT shown with the film at least the screening I went to..,Darn it...Being a huge animation fan I even forked out a few extra bucks to go to a gold class theatre ( the works) in the hope of watching the new goofy short at the beginning....Alas no Goofy!
Have any of the OZ ud users seen the new goofy short? .If its showing Im willing to go back to NT2 just to catch it. Subsequent emails to Buena Vista distribution in Australia have been woefull to say the least....Im not sure they know what a new goofy short is?? :
( They only seem to respond to three words ; High School Musical) sigh

Not at the session I saw either, Mr Arrow. A real shame, as I have only now remembered that it was produced. By "remembered", I mean that I read it in the thread above.Mr arrow wrote:Have any of the OZ ud users seen the new goofy short?
As for the film itself, I absolutely loved it. Having been taken completely by surprise by the first film - and expecting it to be a jingoistic retread of every other film of the genre - I was cautious about the sequel. As much as I loved the first one, sequels in this genre have a tendency to go all pear-shaped. Thankfully, this was not the case here. All of the fun of the first film was there, and this time Helen Mirren was along for the ride. You can't ask for more than that, surely? It's a real return to the old-school adventure stories, where you don't have to worry about anything except going with it and having some fun. If there weren't so many other films to see at the moment - in fact, I saw No Country for Old Men immediately afterwards - I'd go and see it again.
In short, CAGETASTIC.

Sounds like the whole Australia/asia region missed out...I hope they dont end up tacking it onto The Hannah Montana movie or something like that..Hope springs eternal that it will find its way onto a DVD set sometime soon...but hey we are still waiting for Lorenzo and Destino!ur not the only one..we in malaysia didnt get it either..apparent BVI thinks disney cartoons r an embarrasment in front of action movies.

I got to see this on Christmas day. I really enjoyed the first movie so I was looking forward to this one. Thankfully, it was almost as good. I like the first one slightly better but the history geek in me really enjoyed this one as well. I'm hoping they make a third National Treasure as I think this series still has a lot left. I will definately be picking this one up when it comes out on DVD.

I can't wait to be able to see this movie. My mom and I are going to go and see it next week sometime. She isn't feeling well at the moment and I don't want to see it without her.
I saw the trailer on the Pirates dvd and it looks like it's going to be a great movie. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint (though I doubt it will).

I still have yet to see the first movie, but that didn't stop me from seeing Book of Secrets. I went this past week with my family and I thought the movie was really great. Normally, I hate Nicolas Cage, but he was actually pretty tolerable in this movie. I thought it had a lot of great action sequences, a star-studded cast, and to top it off I thought the script and the story were really good too. Overall I was pretty impressed.
I've been searching ALL over for the new 2-Disc collectors edition of the first film, but I have yet to find it anywhere. I have checked two Best Buy's, two Meijer locations, a couple Wal-Mart's and NO ONE has it. I guess I'll have to keep looking, because I really want to see it.

I went and saw this with my wife and the theatre yesterday. I enjoyed the film but I think it was a sequel in the worst since of the term. This film was identical to the first film--it was just more far-fetched. It was lots of fun.
I was delighted when the Goofy short came on. I haven't been reading in the forum so it hit me as a complete surprise. I thought the cartoon was better than the feature. There are so many little gags in that film you could watch it several times before you catch them all.
It didn't hit me until after watching the film: it was 2-D. Wasn't it? Does anyone know any details about how this film was created? Did they actually use hand-drawn animation?
