Well, it's hard to tell from the cruddy second-hand quality, but I don't think they futzed with his vocals any. Nowadays it becomes really obvious when you do that, since software like Autotune makes things sound too perfect, and I don't think that's the problem here. He sounds rough, brooding, and surprisingly sweet in parts (the sustained "Johaaaaaaana" actually sounded quite nice to me, given I was expecting worse).

And I LOVE the Anthony! He looks so cute and sounds very... enticing. And it's so nice to actually have young people play those roles instead of thirty-somethings.

Now I just want to know whose throat I have to slit to hear HBC sing "The Worst Pies in London"!

And today, I bring you the audio from three scenes: My Friends, Epiphany, and Johanna (Act II). It's of lousy quality; again, it was recorded by some guy in the theatre, but it's audio nonetheless. All three are in the megaupload link.

Nine clips from the film have been posted online.

"A Little Priest" made me more excited than I can convey. And hearing "Not While I'm Around" sung by a little kid is just so amazing. That scene gave me chills.

And HOW greasy is Timothy Spall?

Sweeeny Tood: The Movie

Post by Disney Duster »

Well, The Official Web Site is up and running with lots of goodies. Poke around for clips, bios, etc.

The front page has clips of music, and I'm not thrilled with Helena's singing. It's sounds like a recent community theater production of the play I saw where I didn't like the Lovett very much. She's better than her, but I still don't want to be reminded of her. She sound very beautiful at times in "My Friends". And SpringHeel's desired "Pies" is at the very end of the cycle of soundbytes.

But Depp's voice is BEAUTIFUL. Listen to "My Friends" It will come up on the front page eventually. Dare I say it's gorgeous, perhaps not, I don't know enough about voices.

Here is also an interview with EW and an interview with Broadway World.

I love this bit from the EW interview:
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: This Sweeney dude — he is messed up! You are going to freak out a lot of pre-pubescent girls with this character.
JOHNNY DEPP: Ah, finally!
I had heard Depp wanted to move far away from the position of ordinary heartthrob of screaming fangirls.

Oh, I've heard it all. I also agree, Depp sounds better than I had dared hoped for earlier on. As for Helena... I have this thing for non-singers who sing. I'm not sure why. So I dig what she's doing kind of, but I'd think that most of her performance lies in seeing it. Helena's too smart of an actress to fail completely at this, so even if her vocals are completely "eh", her acting will compensate.

Though I do love the last sustained "...and the worst pies in Londoooonnn". It has a nice build-up.

Seriously, this movie can't come out fast enough. All the reviews I've read have been really good. I can't wait!

I am so incredibly excited for this movie!!! :D

I am thrilled with everything that I have seen so far. I have a new addiction to listening to the little snippets we've been given over and over again, yeah I'm lame.

I think all of the singing is really enjoyable:

Depp - Beautiful and 10x better than I could have ever imagined! This will be his crowning acheivment! Hear that Academy???

Helena - I'll admit she's the weakest of the bunch, but I still dig her! I agree with SpringHeelJack, she's too smart to let her self be passed over. I read an early review where the critic said that she was amazing and was frustrated that she was being entered under best actress (claiming she would win easy under supporting).

Rickman - His speaking voice is amazing, I love it so much. Good thing for Rickman that his singing voice is JUST like his speaking voice! He's gonna be a perfect judge!

Cohen - Very nice! He is perfect for Pirelli, and naturally he's hilarious!

Johanna - Very pretty!

Antony - Sounds like he's pinching a bit is spots, but I like him!

Toby - He's good! But he doesn't seem like he's a great actor (see the video clip)

I'm anxiously waiting to hear Timothy Spall!

The casting is perfect, and because its Tim directing, it will be so fantastic all together! Ahhhh I can't wait!

I am SOOOOOO excited for this movie. Ever since I plopped in the DVD of the recording of the original production with Angela Lansbury, I've been waiting for this movie.

CANT WAIT!

BroadwayWorld posted the opening credits. It gave me chills. The orchestrations are gorgeous.

Also, the soundtrack leaked. And may I say, wow. I'll post my thoughts on it later.

Sweeney Todd: The Movie

Post by Disney Duster »

Thank you once again, SpringHeelJack, but I won't be spoiling that much. I already don't like that I saw a community theater production recently, I don't want to remember so much of what will happen before it happens (sometimes you can forget a lot of little parts and they become surprises).

You know, I already think the poster with Mrs. Lovett holding the pies with fingers in them is a spoiler! And you know they did that on purpose just for the poster because if the pies looked that bad no one would have eaten them, and the whole city does!

I really hope this does well, especially critically, and it has so far, but I'm talking about Oscars here!

So it comes out next week but my friend does not want to watch it with me because it might be a horror film. Would you guys consider this a horror film? I have no clue as to whether it is or not. Thanks!

More of a thriller than a horror film. It's not like a "scary things jump at you" movie, but it's quite disturbing. Granted, it's also very funny in some points. Oh, and there's blood. Lots of blood.

Besides lots of blood, there is lots and lots of singing. This is important to point out because almost all the previews/trailers seem to forget to mention that.

I was shocked at all the people who didn't even know it was a musical until I told them! DUH - it's Sweeney Todd! :)

For those who saw I am Legend, it's not as intense as that right? I would hate to sit through another movie like it.

this movie looks amazing - i cant wait to see it!!!!! :D I am in love with Helana Bonham Carter <3<3<3 my favourite English actress!!! as much as i love the musical i would've preferred Burton do a non-musical version based on the true story of Sweeney Tod. i saw an adaptation starring Ben Kinglsey and Joanna Lumley - it was th best i've seen. i think Burton would've been able to pull a non-musical version off better, knowing him i don't think the balance between gore and the music will work. I REMAIN HOPEFUL, THOUGH! :)

For those of you too impatient to buy the soundtrack on Tuesday, here it is to download: http://rs205.rapidshare.com/files/76512479/en.rar

Of course, I'd rather have the SE version with the 80-page booklet myself. And I like "The Worst Pies in London" so far.

Still nervous about seeing the movie though. may be too much gore.

Got my tickets for the midnight screening of "Sweeney" in the Boston Common Loews. I can't be any more excited for this movie.

And tomorrow, in between class, I'm hiking down to Newbury Comics to get the CD. I've had the songs themselves for over a week now, but I really want the physical CD. It's only right.

Huh, I thought I posted here, but I apparently I have not. At any rate, yes, I'm going to see this for Timothy Spall. The Johnny Depp fangirls have yet to drive me away from any movie he (Depp) is in.

I'm really sad it's rated 18A here in Canada. I guess won't be able to go on my birthday after all. :( (it even got 3 1/2 out of 4 in the paper too)

If anyone has seen this film yet, can you tell us how much blood was in it? I really, really want to see this, and other than the fact that it's rated R (yeah parents who want to see it :)) I don't know how I'll handle it if there is too much blood. So if anyone can post, I'll be ever grateful (well, until I go and see it depending on the info).
