Finding Nemo - 25.2 Million Copies Sold @ Year's End

"SANTA ANA, Calif.—Dec. 31, 2003—The video releases of Finding Nemo and Signs reigned at the top in home video sales and rentals, respectively, for 2003, in what was a banner year for DVD, according to Video Store Magazine market research.

Finding Nemo at the end of the year had sold 25.2 million units in both DVD and VHS cassette, outpacing the number two seller for 2003, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which had sold 17.4 million combined units by year’s end. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and the surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding rounded out the top five best sellers for 2003.

“It really was a huge year for DVD,” said Judith McCourt, director of market research for Video Store Magazine. “In 2003 home video sales and rentals was about a $23 billion business in the U.S., and DVD is nearly three quarters of that.”

Meanwhile, consumers took home Signs from the rental store more than any other title in 2003. The sci-fi thriller racked up $86.6 million in rental revenue through 2003, followed closely by The Bourne Identity, with $85.4 million, according to Video Store Magazine market research. , Anger Management and The Italian Job completed the top five renting titles for 2003.

DVD, the fastest growing consumer electronics technology ever, continued its rapid penetration into American culture, topping 50 million U.S. homes and including some 90 million installed units when factoring in all DVD playback devices including video game consoles and personal computers."

Not to take the focus off of Nemo, but: I'm particularly proud of The Bourne Identity's over 80 mill. in rentals. That film deserved so much more at the box office.

Haven't seen that movie yet. Although I do think Matt Damon is sexy.

I highly recommend it. Its really engaging, has some great action thrown in, and great performances all around, particularly by Franka Potente.

I'll make sure and borrow it from someone. I bet my co-worker has it. She tends to buy the movies i don't and vice versa.

nemo deserves all the success it got but i hope disney doesnt do all computer films...i like and need regular 2D cartoons

I guess kids enjoyed it and the parents bought it.

I thought it was ok, it wasn't that fantasic like Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

I wonder how much Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King might beat Nemo.

true...nemo wasnt like Return of the King but I can't even put those 2 in the same category...they deal with completely different things and one is acting the other is animated...in sales tho...i think Nemo is some stiff comptetion for LOTR...well maybe not next year cuz Nemo will be old

a big reason why Nemo is beating LOTR: TTT is because many people didn't want to double dip on both versions, so they waited for the extended edition, I bought both though

Actually, I think the number at years end for TTT included both versions. The main reason Nemo beat it by such a wide margain is because family films always do much better than any other genre on home video.

I believe one of the major reasons Nemo sold so many copies is because 2003 was a defining year for DVD. During 2002, DVD players were still generally more than $100. Of course you could find those day-after-Thanksgiving specials at Wal-Mart for $60, but a decent DVD player still was more than $100 during 2002. Finally in 2003, the prices dropped to below $100. I got my first DVD player in May 2003 and paid about $80 for it. The same player was selling for $60 by October. It would be interesting to know how many DVD players were sold during 2003.

And then Nemo comes out and is just incredible. You've got all these new DVD owners with nothing to watch, or only one or two DVDs. Nemo if the first big hit, and places like Target and Wal-Mart are selling it for $15.
