When it comes to Disney, I save all my vhs tapes. I keep them for memories, but I also spent alot of money on some of them! Plus, there are alot of movies I have that haven't been released on dvd and probably won't, so I just keep them all!

I did so a bit a while back, but with DVD being popular, why would people buy the VHS version??? So any tapes I have left, I just keep...I won't use them if I don't have to when you practically have to key a dvd to get it to quit working.

Like someone else had said, if I don't feel like taking a DVD out of the player (like a DVD from a season set), I could just pop in the VHS, (instead of taking the other disc out, finding its case, putting it away, taking the other DVD out, waiting for it to load, etc.), and watch. Also, some of the DACs that I have on VHS but not on DVD I sometimes watch on VHS, there are lots, because I only have about 20 of the DACs on DVD, but after Christmas, that will change. I'm looking for Pinocchio, TLM II, Mulan, Pocahontas, and so on.

And YES, they DID make VHSs of the PEs. In fact, the movie store in my mall had all the PEs (except LATT and TLM) on VHS up until recently, when they just totally got rid of them. They had SWATSD for $12.99, BatB for $7.99, Bambi for $19.99, and Cinderella for $19.99 (I remember these because they just cleared out 95% of their VHSs only a few months ago, and I was in there so frequently to see if they had any of the OOP PEs hidden somewhere, because they sometimes do).

I even own the PE of BatB on VHS (I recently go the DVD, so don't worry). I bought it back in 2002, about a month after its release, and just a few weeks before my family got a DVD player, and, of course I didn't know that my parents planned on getting one  . It IS fully restored, beautiful animation and sound, almost like the DVD!

Here is what I do with my old VHS tapes:

I gather them together. Often catagorizing them between ratings. G, PG, PG-13, etc.

I wrap them with festive wrapping paper. And I bring them to the local police station for the battered women and children's shelter to pick up.
These people leave abusive situations with the clothes on their backs. The shelter is often strapped for things to do. So I send movies for both the kids and the moms to watch. I grab Blockbuster previously viewed VHS and DVD deals too and send them along as well.

The only VHS tapes I've held onto are Last Unicorn, Plague Dogs, Ringing Bell, Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty.

Other good places to donate VHS and DVDs:
Schools
Daycares
Hospitals
Ronald McDonald House
Charities that take used items to give to needy families
Goodwill, benefit yard sales, etc

as for me, my sister and i were big disney movie fans when we were younger. but our parents never bought us a lot of vhs tapes. the most we ever got were hercules, the limited issues of the little mermaid and peter pan, and a bug's life. that seems so little compared to a lot of other people.

NOW as a 15 year-old, i have started a dvd collection and i'm making progress. the only mistake was starting this late(May 2006! yikes.) i still have a lot of catching up to do. my first dvd in my collection was Aladdin platinum edition since it's my favorite movie.

When I first got a DVD player in 2001, my first Disney DVD came out shortly thereafter: the Snow White PE. And as my DVD collection continues, that's why I'm removing the VHS versions.

Thanks a million. I think I will take them to some of those places. This time of year is just about ripe for such donations.

I was curious and just looked on eBay- some lots of Disney VHS are selling for decent money:
One lot of 24 VHS sold for $51, and another lot of 24 sold for $100. Lots of between 9 and 12 sold for between $12.50 and $20.51. A lot of 40 sold for $36.98, and a lot of 16 solf for $10 and another sold for $33.56. Two lots, one for 58 and another for 61 sold for over $100.

Since we moved, I don't even know how to use the VCR, since it's hooked up to a switcher-thing between the TV & VCR & GameCube. I don't know if I'll watch my VHS tapes much if I have the DVDs.

Do any of you watch your TLK VHS, for example, to see the original dust, waterfalls, and alligators? If Disney ever released a DVD with just trailers on it, then that'd be a big incentive to sell my VHS tapes. All my tapes are in great condition, but I wonder why some lots on eBay sell more than others...

Oh, yeah, I just thought of another advantage to DVDs: if you have a portable laptop computer with a built-in DVD player, you can take the movies with you on long trips.

I don't think my VCR has been used since last summer. I still have a few movies I haven't replaced on DVD yet, but I will eventually. As far as getting rid of my VHS, I usually keep them. They are in my bedroom closet for now. However I do still have some that are on the bottom shelf in my DVD storage tower.

I wrote this in another thread, but I did end up selling my VHS- I already ordered "Pinocchio" and "101 Dalmatians" on DVD (hoping they're not bootlegs), and there are a few others I have the opportunity to buy...The movies that I had on both VHS and DVD, I hadn't watched the VHS copies since I bought the DVD so, overall, I feel good about my sale.
