JimHillMedia reports:
What does this mean for the Masterpiece Edition? The real sad part of this story is that the IMAX versions of "Aladdin," "The Little Mermaid" and "Pocahontas" are reportedly already prepped and sitting in the can, ready to unspool. But -- if what I'm hearing is correct, Heather -- the only way that we're now ever going to see "Aladdin" on the REALLY BIG screen is if Buena Vista Home Entertainment opts to show the film in IMAX this fall as a special promotional event prior to the official kick-off of the sales of the "Platinum Edition" of "Aladdin."

Well, the fact that Disney was prepping it for IMAX is a mixed bag:
Good: This means If I Never Knew You will (or at least has a very, very high chance of) being inserted into the film, which it should be. Although Disney should still provide the option of not viewing it to please purists.
Bad: Being animation needs to be re-touched for IMAX, this means other things that don't need re-touching might get it (waterfalls and crocs in TLK, anyone?). If you're going to change such little things that only us diehards would notice, why change it, period?
Good: This at least guarantees that Pocahontas's transfer will be better than that of the old disc.
We'll have to see what happens when May rolls around...

A friend of mine interviewed Stephen Schwartz about two years ago, and he said that they were working on the "If I Never Knew You" song for the DVD. Here is an excerpt from the interview:

Well, I think it is almost certain the song is going to be incorporated into the film... and I think this is GREAT!!!The decision to cut "If I Never Knew You" was a mutual one, made more or less unanimously by the creative team after a couple of previews of the film, where it became clear that the song was straining the attention span of the younger viewers and slowing the story-telling to close to the end of the film. I was in favor of cutting it, though I am not sorry it has been restored for the DVD version, where
the need for story-telling speed is less severe.

It'd be stupid indeed. The Gold Collection edition's transfer is sub-par, and the bounty of extras we're getting on the Masterpiece edition is definately worth the wait.Mermaid Kelly wrote:just wondering, does anyone think the gold collection disc of pocahontas would be worth picking up? I don't know...maybe the new one will be a lot better so it would be stupid to buy the old one

Well, the Gold Collection edition is BAD, VERY BAD! I'm sure the Collector's Edition will be a 100 times better. Anyway, I will keep my GC copy, in case Disney decides to change the original version of the film.Mermaid Kelly wrote:just wondering, does anyone think the gold collection disc of pocahontas would be worth picking up?
