Finally: Schindler's List in 2004

Great news for those that have long awaited the release of one of Spielberg's finest films...it's coming sometime in 2004. No firm details yet, but the fact that this tidbit (scroll down a bit on the linked page to find it) appears on speilbergfilms.com seems pretty damn credible to me.

I know it's morbid to be excited about a film of this nature, but it truly is a masterpiece. Also, as a huge history buff I simlply cannot get enough of this genre. Hopefully firmer details to come in the coming months.

nod. i love this film as well though it depresses me each time i watch it. the theme song is SO SAD.

It's a very good film, but not one that I would watch very often. I just can't even imagine saying "Hey, you know what we haven't seen in a while, Schindler's List, let's watch that!"

But it's long overdue on DVD. I'm glad the Spielberg movies I really like were released to DVD years ago.

I would have to agree with Luke. It's not a movie that I would watch a lot nor would I think "hey we haven't seen this in a while, let's watch it." It is a great film and one worth receiving a special 2 disc. I actually find myself having to get up and walk out of the room on some of the scenes (shooting) but, from what others have said to me, that was like it really was. Glad to see that his historical movie has arrived to DVD and hopefully a 2 disc special treatment. WOuld LOVE to hear Speilberg's commentary on it!

That'd be great, but I believe Spielberg does not EVER do commentaries. Not sure of the reasoning, but I'm pretty sure he has yet to do one on any of his releases...and how cool would it have been to have a Spielberg commentary track on Jaws?

Oh man..........I hope this is true! I agree it is not a movie that you would watch repeatedly....especially since it's like 3 hrs +. But definitely a movie that would fit nicely into my DVD collection.

Like Poco said, Speildberg's commentary would be just awesome to include. Let's hope he makes time to record it.

Shucks........ I just read (quite reliable source) that Speildberg said NO to an audio commentary for this film

...... Oh well, hopefully deleted scenes and other goodies will be included to compensate.

Add it to my wish list for 2004!

Spielberg never does commentaries. I like him, but he is sort of old fashioned when it comes to things like that and digital film. He doesn't like commentaries and things that distract from the movie viewing experience. At least we still get chapter stops on his DVDs. David Lynch doesn't seem to like chapter stops or deleted scenes at all.

Hate to bring up an old topic, but wanted to let those that are interested to know (in case they did not know already

) to mark March 9th on their calenders.

Schindler's list will be released in a single-disc set and there will also be a gift set. Word is that despite not doing a commentary for the film, Spieldberg does introduce the film.

Part of it has to do with that he feels commentaries are redundant when paired with other extras. I tend to agree not only on that, but also his not wanting to distract from the film. I've never been able to bring myself to watch a movie with commentary - I want to be immersed in the movie, not hear someone talking about how they made it while I watch it.

I've never seen Schindler's List, mostly because when it first came out I was much too young for it. I may end up renting it on DVD once its out, but from what I hear about it, I'd probably never buy it.

I couldn't agree more.
I have been following this story for a while as a part of my gig with DVDBits, and while I'm glad to see a lot of people get excited about it, it is not one that I could 'gladly' go back and rewatch. In fact, I have seen it once since it's original theatrical run. But I do like it.

Not to detract from the film (which was well made and obviously a very personal one for Mr. S), it is just hard to "get in the mood" for something like that.

Anyways, great to see one of the big releases finally come out. The dosumentaries sound interesting too. Dig that box set!

Schindler's List and The Pianist are two movies that I have a hard time watching over and over. I give both films credit for their accurate portrayal of events that occured during the Holocaust. HOWEVER, I have a hard time watching people letting their oppressors kill them without giving it any moral thought. It's like watching lambs being lined up for slaughter. <wince>

Well, I don't think anyone truly "enjoys" watching these films (Schindler's List or The Pianist) unless they are a neo-nazi or hardcore anti-semite. And even then it would take a truly heartless person to get a smile out of these films.

But as a history buff, especially a WWII buff, I love watching these films. This is a part of our history and it's fascinating, morbid as some of it is. You can't watch a film like this and get caught up in the brutality of it ... we all know what happened to 6 million Jews and another 2.5 million Russians, Slavs, Gypsies, Homosexuals and Mentally challenged individuals. I watch these films to be reminded how strong so many people were in such horrible circumstances. How the spirit and courage of so few made such a difference for so many.

To me, Schindler's List is a must have for so many reasons but none more so than that.

I understand his reasons for not wanting to do commentaries, I just don't agree with them 100%. I see how someone may not want to distract from the movie viewing experience, but say you have seen the film multiple times already? Say you have seen it five times, at that point you know the film, the story, the dialogue. As a major film of the film at that point I'd like to hear the director's thought on the film and the making of it. I like to hear the stories about what was going on the day of the shooting of a particular shot. These things you can do with an audio commentary.

DVD is all about choice and options, or so they advertised. Commentaries are great ways to do what I just wrote above. If someone doesn't want to watch the film with the commentary, that is their option to do so. But the option should be there fo rthose of us who would like to hear one.

I'm not sure about Spielbergs argument about commentaries distracting from a film. I'm sure all the well publicised computer wizardry about the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park distracted from the film.

But I think the real reason is Spielberg himself doesn't quite know how he makes his films. I don't mean on a technical level... I mean on an artistic level. I'm sure some of it must be "instinct". I'm sure this makes him feel he cannot put his filmmaking into words for a commentary.

Tim Burton has appaling commentaries on his DVDs and David Lynch won't do a commentary either (and has already stated he doesn't know where most of his ideas come from). I think these people are like Spielberg - they have a talent that words are hard to describe.

That said, I think a film like Schindler's List could benefit from another commentary... somebody, perhaps an historian, recounting the true story of Schindler from his birth to death over the running of the film... pointing out how the real story differs from the motion picture (which I assume it will - even if only slightly) would be informative and worthwhile.

I completely agree, I've never cared for a commentary. if I wanna know how they've made it, I'll just watch the extras. I dont wanna be distracted from the film either
