I picture the SotS situation like this: Disney probably thinks that they are sitting on the lid of a box with angry bees. The bees seem to get angrier for every passing year. That's why they don't dare to get off and open that box...

Are the bees civil rights activists?

Or are they us crazy fans?

I was referring to the "angry people". But I guess it could even be a bit of both: It could finally become apparent that SotS is far from what it seemingly has been made up to be - which could turn out to be a disappointment of quite considerable proportions...

Every DVD you'll find of Song of the South is a bootleg, no matter what any site trying to sell it claims, unless of course, the site is an official Disney site or if the site is UD. Whoever breaks the news first.

Only way to get a legit copy of Song of the South would be either an R2 PAL VHS or the rare Japanese and Hong Kong laserdiscs.

That is the version of "Song of the South" that I own. It's an ok copy. Better than my first VHS copy. The major flaw is that it has Japaneese subtitles during all musical numbers that can't be removed. I don't know if the laserdisc was a poor transfer, but my DVDs picture quality isn't very good. I've heard of a better bootleg that has a good transfer and even goes as far as to have bonus features from the Disneyland show. That version had original cover art and was billed as a 45th anniversary edition. If anyone finds it, let me know. lol. Or better yet, Disney should just legally release it.

The DVD probably is a copy of a LD, so it couldn't be any better than that - probably at least slightly less good... Even if the LD was good for its time, it shouldn't really be expected to be quite up to an optimal DVD of today.

Don't get me started on this, because I know that it isn't a legitimate release, but, I have one of those so-called 45th Anniversary Releases of "Song of the South". It has a brilliant cover of Brer Rabbit and it says across the top "45th Anniversary Edition" and on the bottom it has "Special Collector's Edition". The name Walt Disney is all over the front and there is the 'Disney DVD' logo on the bottom right corner.

On the back cover it has the usual artwork with two screencaps and the Walt Disney Pictures logo with a Region "0" box on the bottom left corner and the MPAA seal in the center bottom and the Disney DVD logo on the bottom right.

The DVD contains not only a fabulous print of the movie, the sound is brilliant and the extras include a Walt Disney intro, and then the tell-tale sign that this is truly a bootleg, there is an Easter Egg hidden on the disc that contain the full-length uncut version of Warner Bros. "Coal Black and the Sebben Dwarfs".

I bought this from a private source for $25 and until Disney gets off their collective arses, I am going to just keep this and enjoy with my grandkids. It is the next best thing to having the real thing in my collection.

Is it legal? Depends on where you live. Most places it is probably illegal to import but not illegal to own. Of course the ramifications should you get caught are probably no more than confiscation.

I bought a bootleg as well and will keep it until Disney issues one.

I was at the Big E this weekend (a large annual fair in New England) and in one of the buildings there was a vendor selling Song of the South bootlegs. The main product was video games, I didn't look at those so I don't know if they where authentic or not. Song of the South was of course not.
I don't think this was the same cover art as the link up above but it was similar. They had a display of both the dvd and vhs out on the floor with a small tv playing the movie. I was kind of amazed they where able to so blatantly sell bootlegs with no problem.
I didn't get it, not sure of the price. I'm not really into bootlegs, generally wouldn't support them, this is the one case I would consider it. The one with extras is what I would do if I did.

This is one instance where I would support bootleggers...not to take $$$ out of Disney's pocket, but to send them a message that there are enough people out there who want this film that we're willing to resort to less-than-legal means in order to have a copy of it.

Unlike other movies that just haven't been released digitally yet, Iger flat out said they weren't going to release this title...which for collectors obviously doesn't sit well. I'm taking DVDJunkie's advice and picking up a copy of this.

One probably could discuss the ethics here, but in this specific case I don't see much of a problem either. For most practical purposes, SotS has turned into an "underground" title.

Looking for films that have never been on DVD before including "Song of the South"? I just got a 2-disc edition from these guys and also two other films. Their quality is top notch, and everything is as advertised.

See what you think. The price is right.

I've been heard this many times during "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Pod" where Aaron discusses "Song of the South" in the "Reviews and Reflections" episode. I guess that movie is a bootleg, but I will not get it. The "Splash Mountain" one is fine with songs from the controversal film, but no James Baskett there.

Song of the South DVD...through TCM??

Post by brotherbear »

Well, today I randomly decided to search on Turner Classic Movie's website to see if they had a page for Song of the South. And yes they did! Here it is!! They have the cast list, synopsis, release dates, Distributor, and everything! AND, most interesting of all, is that there is a little section on the right hand side which states (and I quote):

"Song of the South - Our records indicate this title is not available on Home Video. Vote below for it to be released on DVD."

So far, 363 people have voted for a DVD release! Do you think that it's possible that if they get enough "votes" for SOTS, that they will request from Disney to release a DVD of SOTS? Or, show the number of votes to Disney?

Well, I figured that I should post this link on UD anyway, just in case they get enough "votes" and TCM takes an interest in producing a Song of the South DVD. My question is, if TCM took up the task of creating a SOTS official DVD, would requila still buy it?? :P (I mean, after all, Disney wouldn't technically make the DVD...) Well, who knows. Maybe if we get enough people to "vote" for a DVD of SOTS, we'll get somewhere!
