Grease: Rockin' Rydell Edition September 19

the slipcover is too awesome. I think I know every word to this movie, although honestly its been a year or so since I've seen it, it still is one of my favorite movies. I've been a loyal fan since elementary school, which was obivoiusly quite some time ago. I've been holding out for a good release of this since I only have the vhs version. The slipcover and deleted scenes are reason enough for an upgrade for me.

Although, I hope the disc is good and not some disaster like what they did w/ "pretty in pink" (which was my absolute favorite 80s movie ) for those who don't know, paramount advertised it as including the infamous "original lost ending" and instead only gives a brief commentary on what was going to happen, instead of the scene itself. Let's just say paramount is not on my good side right now.

As far as the grease soundtrack, I've had my old beat up cd lying around since the 6th grade. I might have to go ahead and double dip for that too.

It looks like the Jacket is exclusive to Best Buy (according to their ad,) while Target (I think) has the Pink shirt...

I for $14.99 got it at Target today, They had both the T-Birds and Pink Ladies Versions.

The Transfer looks way better than my old copy and the Jacket Slipcover is cool but it seems like thay went kind of cheap on the rest of the packaging, The case is really flimsy plastic (At least mine is) and the disc has no art printed on it. (the old one did have a cool picture on it.)

I haven't watched any of the features yet, I'm still watching the movie.

I'm glad i decided to get it though, The Transfer looks alot better than the old one.

I found a Part of one of those VH1 specials on a VHS. It was called Fast Forward: Where Are They Now? And it came out around 1998 for the film's 20th Anniversary. Paramount - you own this / have rights to it... Shame on you!

Also, The animated opening sequence is now slightly windowboxed.

I got my copy today and checked out the entire disc contents except for the commentary (which I'll view/listen to tomorrow) and the gallery. The restored picture is gorgeous. The colors are very vivid and there's practically no print flaws at all. It's all so sharp that you can see fine film grain (I mean this in a good way). The supplements were rather light, but fun, anyway, and offered some neat tidbits (Rizzo's hickey from Kenickie? That's not makeup...). The featurette about the DVD party was really cool and had a real "you are there" feel to it. I have to side with Lazario now, though, regarding the VH1 specials. While I'm pretty satisfied with what's here (especially once I've listened to the commentary), I originally thought these supplements would repeat info from the TV specials. They don't. Not only that, but the specials featured interviews with every single T-Bird and Pink Lady, as well Lorenzo Lamas and the actresses who played Cha-Cha and Patty Simcox. On the DVD, only John, Olivia, Stockard, Didi, and Jeff appeared. I also didn't know that the "Grease Day" interviews were taken from a TV special until I saw it mentioned in one of the featurettes. With that knowledge, the absense of the whole special seems glaring. I think what we have on the DVD is quite good, but Paramount moved all that to a second disc along with the "Grease Day" special, VH1 "Behind the Movie" special, and VH1 "Where Are They Now?" special, the DVD would be just about perfect. Heck, I wouldn't mind if Paramount released all this separately on another DVD. Then I could transfer both discs and the film's cover art to a double amaray case.

Oh, and one oddity regarding the deleted scenes: IMDb mentions an argument scene between Rizzo and Kenickie being cut which explains why they're suddenly so hostile at the Frosty Palace. The main featurette even mentions this, calling it the movie's Scorsese scene because of how intense it was. Despite that, it doesn't even show up in the deleted scenes secdtion. Has the footage been lost?

Maybe Paramount held those back along with the VH1 specials for a more extensive anniversary edition in 2008.

I heard the DVD is not remasted and they just used the same one from the other DVD release. Is that true?

Only for the soundtrack, which was already good to begin with. The picture has been newly restored for this release, though.

That is the one deleted scene I remember hearing the most about too, and its not even on there??

Looks like paramount has done it again....(in reference to my earlier post about being mad @ paramount for not including the infamous lost ending on the new pretty in pink disc)

What exactly are you asking me? I'm defending the average lover of this movie who is interested in seeing the movie as something other than a cheap, lame, plastic Nostalgia piece. They want the film's legacy. They want the film's Nostalgic impact in it's own time and their time. They want a lot - I want to see them get a lot. And from a movie this big... If they don't get it, how can we ever expect any other movie to get an extensive treatment? At this rate, we'll soon see a decline of the 2-disc DVD. Or only new movies will get 2-disc DVDs. To make matters worse, nobody seems to care. This has become a matter of all classic movies and their Special Edition DVD treatment. A movie this long in waiting for a real meaty special edition isn't getting it.

Let me attempt to illustrate what I'm saying in terms I think we all can understand (assuming you've seen some Really good bonus features on DVDs, right). This movie needs 2-discs. It always did. Why? Because an Ultimate Edition of this movie (I'm not talking "Ultimate" in terms of Disney or Paramount, so forget the various names of editions of their discs - Ultimate is in reference to the Best / most expansive edition A movie could likely get) could easily cough-up a full-blown 2 hour documentary on the music of the film alone. Now, I'm not saying that's exactly what this disc needs. But it's an example used to show just how little Paramount is actually doing for this movie. That's the music of the film alone. The music of this film has 1 history in and of itself. A true legacy. A "how it all started," a "how we came to be involved," an "impact it had on film, Broadway, ..."

Alright, forget it. I know I'm not the right person to go into all this. Because I'm not that big of a fan of the movie. But I can easily understand how much detail there is in this film. There are a lot of stories to tell about the film and it takes more than just 1 person to do it. This new edition is barely celebrating it's subject. In fact, there's not even any evidence that Paramount is planning this Edition to be the End-All, Be-All treatment of this movie. If Criterion had been handling this movie, we would have had the Ultimate Edition by now. Hell, they might have even gone so far as to cough up 2 bonus discs, making a 3-disc set of the movie.

No offense, but why does everyone always think so Small in terms of bonus features?

I got my copy w/awesome T-Birds slipcover at Best Buy on Tuesday. I have to say that I am in love with this edition. It is spectacular! (I'm not being sarcastic). This is the best version of the movie I have, and I am so happy with it. I haven't watched all the features, and I've listened to about half of the movie with the commentary, which is really heavy on the info about the movie/production/play/characters/actors, it's pretty amazing. I love this edition! I wish that it was 2-Discs, but I'll live!

No it doesn't. Do you even have this version? This version looks much better than the pervious version, even though the animation at the beginning was slightly windowboxed. That doesn't even matter because this is the best version of the movie that Paramount has put in stores. I have to totally disagree with you. What is your problem!!!!!! It was my opinion and I can state what I want WHEN I want!!! That is what a forum is for to state my opinion and that is I did. I saw the screen caps from the review and from what I seen on one picture the 2001 version looked better. I have not viewed it yet to conpaire!

And Luke/Aaron only told me not to make a post with just the laughing emotion icon if you must know everything trouble maker!
