I knew that a CGI film based on Dr. Seuss' classic children's book Horton Hears a Who was in development for some time now. At first I thought it was a crummy idea, especially after Cat in the Hat's failure. But when I saw these stills, I quickly changed my attitude:
After seeing this still, I now have faith that this film may be truthful to Dr. Seuss' original character designs. It's being made by Blue Sky (the studio behind the Ice Age films) & the voice cast includes Steve Carell as the Mayor of Whoville (see link below) & Jim Carrey as Horton.
I LOVE the art work. I can not wait for this film! The one thing is Carrey the right man to be Horton? I could see him as The Grinch but he does not seem Horton-y. OH well. Also I think it should be a Christmas release. There is something about most every Seuss story say holiday season to me.
I hope it does good too since I would love to see The Lorax get a big screen adaptation. I wonder myself though how are they going to stretch this to 90 minutes? Gotta wait for a trailer for that answer.
Let's just hope they don't trash it like they did to The Cat in the Hat, which was very horrible. I could tolerate the Grinch but even that was not as good as the classic cartoon.[/b]
Wow tha CGI looks good. Better than I had expected it to be. Looking forward to this one. I've never read the book, but hopefully I'll want to after seeing the film. Jim Carrey should be good in it.

I'm just excited that another Dr. Seuss book is being brought to the big screen. I loved "The Grinch" and couldn't stop laughing at "The Cat in the Hat," although I found it to have to many sexual references for a family film and the plot was kind of weak. Anyways, I think "Horton Hears a Who" looks great. I think it would be neat if they had just the Who's be live action to tie it together with "The Grinch." I just wish Dreamworks would make my two Seuss favorites, "Green Eggs and Ham" and "The Lorax" into theatrical films.
I loved the live-action Grinch, but had mixed feelings about Cat in the Hat. I still bought them both though (found a good deal to get the two for 10). I totally agree that Cat in the Hat overdid the adult humor. I like Mike Myers in general, but he probably wasn't the best choice, and I think I'd keep him out of family films from now on, ha. Still, the film had some good points and I liked the human characters. Plus, my 3 year old niece LOVES that movie, so I guess it has an audience. It was very helpful while she was visiting this summer. Anyways, The art for this new Horton film looks great, except that the Who looks a bit too much like the Grinch to me. Looking forward to seeing it though. But, frankly, my favorite as a kid was Horton Hatches an Egg. Well, besides the Grinch.
I always like Chuck Jones' works (especially for T&J, The Phantom Tollbooth, Rikki Tikki Tavi, Looney Toons, Dot and the Line, etc) but after I saw two screencaps I must say, I'm amazed! I'm definately going to see this film! I hope that this film will follow the original story just as CJ did in his version.
Animated-news says USA Today reported the release date would be March 14, 2008. Which makes sence because Blue Sky has released all it's movies in March.

I agree. It'd be good if they had like Taylor Momsen, and Molly Shannon, etc. appear briefly in it, so that people get that it's the Whos world. And I totally agree with the other books. The only Dr. Seuss books I've read are The Grinch, The Cat in the Cat, Green Eggs and Ham and The Lorax. Not many people know the Lorax, but I reckon that it would be friggin' spectacular if it went on the big screen. I grew up with that book, so it'd be great if they do it. But they'll probably do Green Eggs and Ham first.

The only thing about the Lorax is that it is a pretty downer of a story for kids. Basically, there is this happy Lorax who lives in a world with these beautiful trees, and then the Whonceler (sp?) comes and chops them all down to make consumer products. Which then leads to the Lorax's home becomming a desolate wasteland. Sounds awfully kid freindly to me.
But then, I'm sure it would be changed a bit for the bg screen.
Yeah, I can see what you mean. Pretty depressing, but doesn't it end on a high note or something? Doesn't he give the kid a seed to plant or something? If I was adapting the film I'd keep everything from the book the same, and then elaborate on the ending, making it nicer. Just my thoughts.

As a not too enthusiastic CGI viewer, if they give me an inch to criticize then I have had something to say about every CGI film ever made! But if those caps are a true representation of what the final film will look like, I may finally be silenced, Those caps look truly wonderful!
