Disney announces more titles for Blu-Ray.

Does anyone know how well Blu-ray is selling? i mean, is it having the tremendous impact everyone was "hoping" for?

What were the 1st and 2nd wave of Blu-Ray discs announced? So it appears they are not releasing any animation as of yet on this format?

Well, I just check Amazon.com and the top selling Blu-Ray title was Tears of the Sun starring Bruce Willis. It was ranked as #6,772 best-selling DVD while the competing hi-def format, HD-DVD's best selling title was Terminator 3, ranked at #229.

Make of the numbers what you will, but right now HD-DVD seems to be doing better than Blu-Ray. I suspect a great deal of this has to do with the price tag of the players (about $500 for an HD-DVD player vs. $1000 for a Blu-Ray player). This, of course could change as both formats are very new.

Either way, it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to buy either an HD-DVD player or a Blu-Ray player unless one owns an HD-TV. And then, to top that off, you'll need either a component or HDMI/DVI wires to hook up your player to the television to get the high quality picture.

So, I don't think Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will make much of an impact until more people start picking up HDTVs.

when are they gonna release the good stuff? i.e. Pixar, Animated Claasics, Best of Live Action. I bet the first animated classic to get the Blue Ray treatment will be Home on the Range.

I dunno. With Meet the Robinsons coming to theatres in March 2007, I believe its first release will be both DVD and Blu-Ray, making MTR the first DAC to be on Blu-Ray.

Though, of course, I'm anxious to see how Blu-Ray will treat my baby Finding Nemo.

I just hate how they have to cut off some of the cover always with those huge labels. I don't see either format taking off for awhile still.

When there's a big enough consumer base. No point in wasting their "classics" when they will only get limited sales.

I think I'm the only person who actually really LIKES the blu-ray disc art, wasted space and all. I think the little soccer picture they added to the corner of Goal! The Dream Begins was a great idea.

Anyway, I mean to pick all these up...unfortunately with all the regular DVD releases that are on my list, my budget is stretched beyond belief. Therefore, I'm allowing myself to buy only one from each of the three waves.

Wave 1: September 19th - Dinosaur. I will wait to pick up Eight Below until after the holiday season.

Wave 2: October 17th - Haunted Mansion. I will wait to pick up Glory Road, Gone in 60 Seconds, and The Brothers Grimm until after the holiday season.

Wave 3: November 21st - The Wild. I will pick up Annapolis and some of the other ones next year.

I've had an HD-DVD player since it launched and I ADORE it. Given, I have a 76" 720p screen, so your own milage may vary.

Seriously, though, almost all the films I have on HD-DVD look PHENOMENAL. I really wish Disney would look at the sales figures and change the horse their backing, because I really don't plan on investing in Blu-Ray anytime soon.

This isn't to say that Blu-Ray is bad. Common wisdom these days says that the video on both formats looks fantastic. It just COSTS too darn much!

Then again, I can't really say that I'm all that broken up about not having Disney's support yet - they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel here, release-wise. While their choice of films may bum some people out, it's even MORE disappointing to me, having seen films like "The Lion King" on HDTV. I know what Disney can do... they just WON'T yet. LE SIGH.

One of these formats is going to have to "win out" before they can expect widespread adoption. After all the money we've all already thrown into our Disney DVD collection, who would seriously consider REinvesting all that money into titles we already own if the chance exists that the horse Disney has chosen to back ends up as the next Beta-Max?

...as for the news of what titles are going to be released, wake me up when one of them is a DAC or something comperable.

I agree that one of the two formats will have to "win out". After my earlier post in this thread, my DVD player decided to crap out on me. So I trooped on down to my local Circuit City and Best Buy to check out the new DVD machines.

I ended up picking up an "open box value" HD-DVD player at Best Buy. I did look at the BluRay player as well, but the HD-DVD was much more affordable. The HD-DVD player works perfectly on my 720p HDTV. It does up-convert my regular DVDs, so it won't be a total loss even if HD-DVD loses the format war.

Overall, though, I think Disney is making a mistake by not backing HD-DVD as well as BluRay. Why back one horse when you can back both? BluRay is too expensive at the moment, while HD-DVD is much more affordable.

I read somewhere (can't remember where though) that Disney was supposedly keeping their options for both formats open for the time being. As they didn't want to commit to much one way or the other until the tide turns in whichever formats favour. This might have been old news though and maybe they are just going with Blu-Ray.

Its selling, but not what Sony hoped for (same with HD-DVD). They really need a $500 player other than the PS3 thats coming out. With Gen 2 HD-DVD players coming out soon, I'm wondering what Blu-Ray will roll out.

From what I have gathered in reviews and peoples opinions, right now HD-DVD is winning the war. Mainly due to price and so far reviews of the HD-DVDs are better than Blu-Ray. Stuff like video quality, etc... hasn't been great on the first Blu-Ray titles. Although that is changing. Later Blu-Ray releases have gotten higher reviews based on video, audio, etc...

I've only seen the demo units at Best Buy, but from the demo units HD-DVD looked better to me. Who knows what settings Best Buy used on the demo units though.

Anyway both formats have a long way to go to replace DVDs, if they even do in my opinion.

My older brother is a tech geek. I'm not, but I will try my best to translate what he told me. Sony makes blue ray. I guess there is a shortage of the blue lazers (or something like that) that read the blue ray discs. He said that Sony has temporarily stopped shipping out these lazers to other manufacturers, so at the moment, only Sony is making Blue Ray players. Also, the PS3 was originally supposed to be the big advantage for Blue Ray, but now it's looking pretty bad. I guess there are two versions of PS3 coming out (I'm not a gamer either) kind of like what X-Box did with the 360. Anyways, the cheapers system, which I believe is $500, will be able to play Blue Ray discs. However, in 2 years or so, Sony is going to be slapping a new copy protection software onto all future discs produced, and the cheaper PS3 will NOT be able to play Blue Ray discs produced after that. So if you wanted your PS3 to be a Blue Ray player forever, you would need to buy the more expensive one, which I think it in the $600 range or something. I'm probably wrong on the pricing. Also, I guess that Sony is having trouble with thedual layer tecnology for Blue Ray. They are able to make the discs dual layer, but the early Blue Ray players released are having problems playing them. They will not release discs that won't play correctly in a majority of the players out there, so at the moment, Blue Ray is limited to I think 7 GB's of space, when it has the potential for 14GB's. So in short, the future of Blue Ray is looking rather bleaque at the moment.

HDDVD, on the other hand, has more Studios support, the players are cheaper, AND WB has just released the first season set on HDDVD, Smallville season 5. They also have broken through the dual layer technology and all discs play in all players. It seems like due to Blue Ray's cost and it's very rocky start, that HDDVD has a great advantage on Blue Ray. HDDVD players are capable of being rapidly manufactured by many companies, more studios have sided with it, and I haven't heard about anything in the future that could cause you to not be able to play future releases. I think the only thing that Blue Ray has on HDDVD is that Blue Ray discs can hold more information, but I think it's a difference of 3GB's and discs are so slim that I don't feel multi disc sets would hurt anybody.

Our local newspaper had an article about the format war last Friday. Basicaly is sounds like the sales of the next gen dvd's are not going well at all. Retailers have said they are selling very few HD DVD players and even less Blue Ray players. They said most consumers wanted to wait and see which format wins before they invest in a new player. Even though Sony is trying to make everyone think they more exclusive contracts, this is not the case. Most movie companies are keeping their options open, including Disney. As far as the PS3, Sony could be in for some trouble. The rumor is that the blue ray player in the game console has not been performing well and the movie quality on the PS3 is no better than a regular DVD.
