Disney Anniversary
Happy 57th to the most requested yet denied film on DVD! Walt Disney's Song of the South was released on November 12th, 1946, and re-released several times in theaters, the last time in the 1980s. After that, the home video business became popular, but alas, all of a sudden, one of the most poplular, best remembered classics was suddenly banned from home video . . . at least in the USA. And so it was that the film became an extremely popular bootleg from overseas just because after 40 years of re-releases, someone suddenly thought it looked like Walt Disney had made a racist film. Anyways, this is a classic movie and I encourage anyone to see it who can, for it's truly great. All is not lost though. Song of the South lives on, as it is responsible for one of the most popular Disney songs (Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah is probably only second in popularity to Wish Upon A Star), and an immensely successful amusement park ride (Magic Kingdom's Splash Mountain always has the longest line whenever I've been to Disney World, and it for a while to be the only place to get Song of the South merchandise). However, recently Disney has seemed to deny the movie's existence less, and even included the title song of the movie in a recent musical pin collector's set, not to mention rising rumors of a legitimate US release. We can only hope that perhaps Disney might find it in their hearts to release this timeless film for a 60th Anniversary celebration. Happy Birthday to everyone around Brer Patch!
What would this wretched world be like without Disney?
