10 Years of the Spice Girls
10 Years of the Spice Girls
well... not really, because they sort of slowly split up after a couple or so years. And they haven't really done much since...
But, it's 10 years since Wannabe was number one for 7 weeks in the UK and from there it went on to be number one in 31 different countries.
And say what you will about the Spice Girls, they were top of their game in the mid 90's. Who can forget the high-camp comedy of Spiceworld the movie? The mix your own tunes gameplay of Spiceworld the PS1 game? The endless tracks and videos from Spiceworld the album? Or collecting the stickers and trading them with friends for Spiceworld the sticker album? While sucking on a candy lollypop from Spiceworld the sweeties?
Of course, since then times have been leaner.
Posh Spice seems to be working on her absolute goal of becoming so thin she'll be invisible if viewed from the side, and personfying the arrogance she played up while in the group.
Sporty Spice (who could actually sing) never had the solo success she deserved. I believe she sometimes takes part in motorsport.
Baby Spice tried a little presenting and acting, her biggest role being Roxy Hart in Chicago on the London stage (but her biggest triumph was playing herself in Ab Fab).
Ginger Spice became a laughing stock, because she tried to cling to fame so desperately. Poor Geri.
And Scary Spice did a bit of presenting, before becoming one of the best rubber mask characters on Bo Selecta ("Ow, me grapes!") and according to some reports is about to marry international film superstar Eddie Murphy. (No, I don't believe it either).
But none of these (non)achievements can undermine the success they had together. Now girls, use your "Girl Power" and bring out a decent compilation CD and DVD set. You could call it Spiceworld the compilation just to be original and daring. It's money sitting in the bank! Go on girls... do it! Do it! Do it!

I have to admit that I kinda like the Spice Girls, mainly for nostalgia reasons. As a matter of fact, they were the first pop group to get me into the whole contemporary music scene. I was eight when they made it big, and I hadn't paid much attention to pop music before that. My parents used to only listen to classical music or pop music from the late 60s to mid 80s and I saw stuff that was popular with kids in England when I was around six or seven (read: Take That) fairly creepy. It was only the Spice Girls who made me warm to pop music. I remember having both their albums on tape (shame that I didn't get the CD, as tapes seem so useless now
) and listening to them over and over again. I remember scheduling Boxing Day 1997 on watching a televised Spice Girls concert (along with The Sword in the Stone
). I also saw the movie in cinemas and had it on video. I saw the film again two years ago and thought it was pretty stupid, though not as bad as people claimed it to be. I think that whilst it was mediocre, it didn't deserve as much critical hatred as it probably wasn't exactly envisioned as the next Casablanca or Citizen Kane even by the creators.
Of course, their music for me today isn't exactly as amazing as it was when I was eight or nine (I listened to "Spice Up Your Life" recently and it's pretty dum) and overtime, I've strayed away from most mainstream pop (as in stuff by artists like this, not rock artists/bands who happen to have a lot of media attention), but they were the first contemporary music group that I liked, so I like them for that at least.

lol, yeah the nineties were pretty dark times for Holland, as I rode from town to town...2099net wrote:Yes. She's a bloody good singer.PatrickvD wrote:sporty spice could sing?.... was I headless back in the nineties?

seriously though, I've never heard any of the Spices sing live so I wouldn't know. They can make Madonna sound good on an album these days so, it's difficult to tell how they sing live. And well... Madonna doesn't sound that great... but I'm getting off the subject.
What was the point I was trying to make? oh right, on the albums they all sound allrigh, when in reality not all of them could sing.

I will admit I liked the Spice Girls when they were big. My cousin was absoluetley obsessed with them. I do remember all of that merchandise mentioned in the first post (mainly because my cousin had it all). But, if for nothing more than nostalgia, I will somewhat miss those times. Or at least, what I can remember of it.

I've never really liked the Spice Girls. I don't know why, so I can't tell you, but I never really liked 'em.

Hey, Wondy
I didn't think V is for Vendetta was weird.
Also I don't have Xenophobe.
Umm...I guess you like the band Queen when no girls are in it so why not call it King.
Hey Wondy remember the Macarena don't tell me you didn't do it I.
I remember the whole world did it so did I.
It's like the 10th year anniversary for that too.

Hey Macarena

I used to love the Spice Girls! I still like them though, but not in the same way. I can still put a song on and be totally happy by the end of it as it reminds me of when I was younger. Also, the second album reminds me of Blackpool, because we went there one night, and I listened to the album over and over again on my personal tape player
I still like 'Too Much' though and 'Viva Forever'
