What Movie Did You Just Watch? (Now Enhanced with FastPlay!)

I don't get to see nearly as many movies as I'd like to, and even less in theaters, but I have gotten around to seeing several in the past couple of weeks & while I was off on vacation recently. Those included:

- Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (re-watched)
- Memoirs of a Geisha
- Tears of the Sun
- Napolean Dynamite

I really enjoyed Memoirs, Tears of the Sun, and I'm a big Bebop fan so it was a given I'd be re-watching the movie over and over, but Napolean Dynamite just wasn't the laugh riot that I was expecting with all of the praise I was hearing. I like the character, and it had some genuinely funny moments, but overall I was a little dissappointed. That said, there have been movies that have been better and better as I've tried them again later so maybe that'll be the case.

Danovan's Reef - John Wayne

Princess and Magoo I had not seen in years and really enjoyed them, Princess more so because I watched it on TV and had to deal with Commercials.

Donovan's Reef was interesting from the time frame perspective but really out of character for the John Wayne of the 60s & 70s.

Amarcord (1974 - Italy): Fellini Fest 2006 continues at the Loomis Household. This is the type of film that Fellini does best. That's not to say this is his best work, but this nostalgic, dream-like examination of crowds and people, and how they react to love, life and politics, through the eyes of a childhood memory conjures up a whole lot of good emotions. Equal parts comedy and drama, this is a 'feel good' film without being sappy. After Satyricon, this was a welcome return to the type of film I tend to enjoy.

Howl's Moving Castle (2004 - Japan): If further proof was needed that Disney needs a good kick in the pants in their story department, then this is it. Miyazaki once again proves that a fairy tale type story can still work well if it is blended with a kind of retro-modern feel. It may not have quite the same level of depth as some of the other Ghibli films, especially when compared to the environmentalism of Princess Mononoke, the anti-war sentiment of Grave of the Fireflies or the character development of Spirited Away. However, it has an 'epic' feel to it without being overlong. More to the point, it is enjoyable.

Safe (1995 - USA): Although this wasn't released in Australia until 2004 (beating the Netherlands by a year!), Todd Haynes' film is still just a relevant today as it was back in 1995. Is Carol White (Julianne Moore) crazy, or genuinely allergic to the twentieth century?Moore's 'environmental illness' doubles as a metaphor for AIDS, but works well as a piece on its own. She is dominated by her surroundings at all times, and the cold environments and Vangelis-like score by Ed Tomney gives you plenty to ponder, rather than leaving you cold.

Now I've got a whole weekend of depressing French films ahead of me. The next trip to the video store is going to have a 'wacky 1930s screwball comedy' theme I think...

Ah yes, I forgot Prime from earlier this week... a nice blend of drama and comedy. It's always nice when a "romantic comedy" actually turns out to be funny throughout and not a mushy drama from beginning to end. Better than expected.

I just wrapped up some sort of Nicolas Cage marathon last night. Lord of War on Wednesday, Raising Arizona on Thursday, then The Weather Man last night.

All three were great. That is all I can say.

Red Eye - Decent thriller with a great performance by Cillian Murphy...

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (70's Version) I am a huge horror film buff and just rented it to rehash it all, an amazingly freaky film.
