Is it Economical for large purchase?

Post by consultant »

What if there are say 20 titles I want to buy that the Movie Club has to offer (stuff like Mouse Detective, Saludos - none of the Platinum stuff.) Am I better off just getting these from reputable resellers on E-bay or would the Movie Club be cheaper? I calculated that the average cost per disc including tax is $14.22 which is about what these can be had for on E-bay +/- $2. with their current standard offer - first 3 for $1.99, fourth $14.95, fifth $9.95, and 4 more to buy at $19.95 with $6.95 shipping if bought all at once.

Seems the only way to make the Movie Club really pay off is if you could sign up multiple times, or is the VIP prices low enough to make it worthwhile if you wanted to buy another 10 titles after fulfilling your obligation?

Not at all!

Wait for an offer, where you get 40% off every dvd you purchase, after you purchase 2 at regular price.

I did that awhile ago, paid full price for the 2 trasures in the list below:

01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-MAKE MINE MUSIC (FS) 1
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-DUCKTALES THE MOVIE 1
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-SALUDOS AMIGOS (FS) 1
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-FUN AND FANCY FREE (FS) 1
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-ATLANTIS-COLLECTOR'S-2DISC 1
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-WDT2-MICKEY MOUSE IN B&W 1
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-WDT4-MICKEY IN B&W VOL 2 1
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-WALT:MAN BEHIND MYTH (WS) 1
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-WDT2-BEHIND THE SCENES

And then got the rest, 40% off. Some of them, like Saludos Amigos, and Walt, Man Behind the Myth, were already marked down with super saver pricing as well. The DMC is totally beneficial if you're trying to build a collection. You just have to wait for the right time, and the right deal to come along. I think that entire order was about $170. About $25 of that was for shipping, since they charge initially, and then per item. But $145 for 9 DVD's, 3 of which were treasures (retailing anywhere from $25-30 a piece), I think was quite the deal.

I almost decided to join but decided against it primarily because in the past with these sorts of things, I grew irritated by the junk mail and having to remember to respond that I didn't want the feature selection. I know, not that big of an inconvenience but I ran some numbers and the Movie Club really doesn't save you that much money compared to other places you can buy the titles.

For example, deals on Treasures are often discussed. The latest one is buy 2 and get one free. That's $29.95 X 2 + shipping. What's shipping, about $7 if you buy 3 so total cost for three is around $67 includding shipping which comes out to about $22.50 a piece. DeepDiscountDVD.com sells the treasures for $22.98 with free shipping.

You would expect since the Movie Club should get these DVD's at a lower cost than the retailers they could undercut them, but not apparently. Disney is not one to leave money on the table so it appears even their best Movie Club deals only undercut the lowest priced retailers but a few cents or a buck. Let's take Mike's example for another analysis. He said about $170 for the following titles:

01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-MAKE MINE MUSIC (FS) 1
$10.44 at deepdiscountdvd.com, free shipping
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-DUCKTALES THE MOVIE 1
$23.89 at deepdiscountdvd.com, free shipping
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-SALUDOS AMIGOS (FS) 1
$10.44 at deepdiscountdvd.com, free shipping
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-FUN AND FANCY FREE (FS) 1
$10.44 at deepdiscountdvd.com, free shipping
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-ATLANTIS-COLLECTOR'S-2DISC 1
$28.79 at deepdiscountdvd.com, free shipping
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-WDT2-MICKEY MOUSE IN B&W 1
$22.98 at deepdiscountdvd.com, free shipping
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-WDT4-MICKEY IN B&W VOL 2 1
$22.98 at deepdiscountdvd.com, free shipping
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-WALT:MAN BEHIND MYTH (WS) 1
$22.98 at deepdiscountdvd.com, free shipping
01/21/2006 05958164 DVD-WDT2-BEHIND THE SCENES
$22.98 at deepdiscountdvd.com, free shipping

Total cost = $175.92

So the Movie Club saves you $5 on a $170 purchase?

Also, does the Movie Club offer brand new releases, like Lady and Tramp, at discounts the day they come out or do you have to wait for a deal? If you have to wait, then most members would be pre-ordering at Amazon or DeepDiscountDVD anyway.

I don't think joining the club is a bad idea, especially if you are a big Disney Movie fan. But the money saved compared to getting them from other sources is pretty insiginificant so that's not a good reason.

consultant - the one thing you forgot to mention in your price comparison between Deep Discount DVD and the movie club is that several of the Disney Treasures that you listed for $22.98 on DDDVD are not available and haven't been for years.

Yes, the current ones are $22.98, but MM B/W vol. 1; Behind the Scenes, Disneyland USA etc... are not available on DDDVD, only the Disney Movie Club has them.

Don't get me wrong. I use Deep Discount all the time. Their current $10.44 promotion is awesome, but you can get some good deals on the club also if you wait for Super Saver + the discount codes.

I've written this before, but I also disagree (ie agree with msadrakula).

I essentially wrote this in another thread but here it is again:

What I do is buy new releases at Best Buy or some other retailer the first week they come out. They are usually the cheapest then, and much cheaper than you can buy them in the club. If there's a really good deal (like at deepdiscount) I'll buy through them as well- like their current $10.44 sale.

I have used the club for the discounts they offer each month (depending on how good they are), for the deals (such as 3 for $30 or something like that) and for DVDs that I have a hard time finding elsewhere. I bought The Emperor's New Groove CE and Atlantis CE for great prices through DMC and both counted towards my commitment. You have a full two years to fulfill your commitment and there are hundreds of DVDs to choose from.

Personally I buy DVDs for the cheapest I can find them and use DMC as a supplement. The non-platinums (ie the less popular) DVDs are often even cheaper ("Super Savers").

I have one commitment left and have been in the club almost a year. Including shipping fees and my initial signup deal, I've spent $122 on 12 DVDs- about an average of $10 a DVD incl 4 of the 5 commitment titles.

These are the titles I've bought thus far (all an avg of $10 a piece):
ALICE IN WONDERLAND
FUN AND FANCY FREE
MARY POPPINS(40TH)
ATLANTIS-COLLECTOR'S-2DISC
DUMBO
TENG: ULTIMATE GROOVE COL EDIT
WALT:MAN BEHIND MYTH
MANY ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH
FINDING NEMO
OLIVER AND COMPANY
A GOOFY MOVIE
WILD HEARTS CAN'T BE BROKEN

I've got one more commitment to go. And the best signup offer is not the one you mentioned- there is one where you can get 4 free, 1 at 14.95 and 1 at 9.95. The code is in the "who's a DMC member" sticky at the top of this forum.

Like I said, I don't think it's a bad decision. DMC makes a good supplement.

Here's my problem though. I only collect the Classic Animations and Treasures. I have them all (Chicken Little is on the way). So if all I'm going to buy in the future is new Classic Animations releases and re-releases and Treasures, I'm not going to be getting them from DMC since there aren't any deals on brand new stuff from what everyone says.

Now here's the catch. I do have 5 titles that I either bought used and are scratched, or they are missing their chapter inserts. I can buy replacements for $10.44 at deepdiscountdvd.com for $52 total but that DMC deal of 4 for free ($1) shipping plus $15 for a 5th would save me $36. But the thing is I don't know what else I would ever purchase from DMC unless they offered brand new releases right when they came out at prices that are on par with the discounters.

I guess I could fulfill the membership by getting some good deals on DVD's and use them as gifts.

So I want to confirm a couple things:

So DMC frequently offers good deals (less than the $19.95 plus shipping price) on good titles that will count toward your fulfillment??

Are there any other benefits to the Club? It seems like ultimatedisney.com keeps me well informed so DMC wouldn't pose any advantage as far as more advanced release announcements would it? (I know a negative is having to order slip covers separately but if I'm buying as a gift, I won't care about slip covers.)

Oh an by the way, the fact DMC has Treasures is actually a negative. I've heard from other Treasures Collectors that it is VERY common to receive tins with a least one ding, dent, or pressure point from DMC so you have to keep sending them back anyway, versus paying a few bucks more on E-bay to be able to have the seller verify the tin is MINT.

I agree to an extent with most of whats said here. I used the club to collect alot of the "classics" that are lesser known, and that I didn't have. As a means to build my collection quickly. Buy 2, get the rest at 40% off was a pretty sweet deal.

As far as the tins go, I used it to get quite a few, especially as I got Goofy through them recently before it finally went out of stock, and didn't have to pay a ridiculous price for it used or new through ebay or amazon marketplace. I will say this - they packaged the dvd's with care. In that package above, each one was wrapped individually and obviously carefully. All of them were in excellent condition, if not mint. But I'm not THAT picky - i want them to look nice, and not trashed, but a couple dings dont bug me.
