And the critics are raving... You know, according to the commercials. How many critics do you know said Shrek or Madagascar were "smart" or "inventive"? Few if any. Hoodwinked almost looks like the anti-Shrek. And arriving not a moment too soon, with the current advent of Madagascar on DVD. I can't wait to see it and I know I won't be disappointed.

How many of you have seen the special on ABC about the making of "Hookwinked"? Probably not to many judging from the postings here. The movie is done in "Law and Order"-style with the film starting at the point that the woodsman saves Little Red Riding Hood from the wolf.

The police enter and then the story is told in flashback form and from what I saw on this special, it looks hilarious. The voice-overs are top notch including Glenn Close and many others. I think we should all put aside our critics hats, and wait for the product to hit the theaters. I think it will be a smash hit.

Oh yeah I forgot that Glenn Close is in it. I might rent it just to see if I like it, I mean I do have Madagascar. So I'll give it a chance, who know I might think it's funny.

As for Hoodwinked, it looks too similar to Shrek (turn classic fairy-tales "upside down"), so I will avoid this film since it looks lame and unoriginal. Boy do we need more original ideas from animation studios these day! At least we'll always have Aardman and Pixar!

Anyway to answer your question:

Aardman: The claymation studio in Englad most famous for creating "Chicken Run" and "Wallace and Gromit".

Ghibli: The anime studio in Japan and most famous for creating "Spirited Away" and "My Neighbor Tortoro".

"Wallace and Gromit" I can handle any time any where.

"Spirited Away" was probably the best of the Anime films that I have ever seen. It was very deep in its storytelling, and the animation was wonderful.

Why haven't they been able to duplicate that in other films. I tried to watch "Princess Mononoke" the other night on TCM, and found it almost unwatchable. Maybe because it was dubbed and not in Japanese with English subtitles like "Spirited Away". I thought the animation was very herky-jerky, and the attempt at 3-dimension drawing was very disconcerting. The same with "Howl's Moving Castle", I thought the animation was very cheap looking. What other Anime films would you suggest are equal to "Spirited Away"?

I have seen "Kiki's Delivery Service" and found it to be totally unwatchable. I guess my animation likes and dislikes are not like others. I am used to Walt Disney and Warner Bros. animation with all the motion and emotion showing in the facial expressions and such and I don't see that in these Anime films. However, I did see that in "Spirited Away".

Almost right. Aardman don't just do claymation, but all forms of animaion. They are however best known for their claymation work, and so far their films and well known TV series (Creature Comforts, Rex the Runt, Robbie the Raindeer) have been in this format. But the next "Flushed Away" will be CGI (but with the distinctive Nick Park teeth design), and they also do traditional animation for adverts and cgi for their PlanetSketch TV show.

Get over it, Shrek is one of the most overrated films in history. Sorry you don't like the sound of that. But it's the truth. And most of those 132 critics were, 1) paid off by the company / 2) comparing the upbeat tone of Shrek to the parade of theatrical drek planned for that year (which would turn any self-respecting critic into a Shrek optimist), but it's still tainted / 3) complete morons or non-serious critics for other companies like Blockbuster who did it to boost sales.

You're right on both accounts. I was assuming, and this trend is seeming like a fad. Where depressingly, it shouldn't be entirely-CGI animated movies. The fad should be real live-action movies that use CGI to enhance or create fake things. I'm so amazingly sick of that bs. It's lazy, not creative or crafty. It's frickin' superlazy. And too easy considering only the big budget movies can afford it.

Alright gang, I am here to tell you that I just returned from seeing "Hoodwinked" and it is an amazingly funny, entertaining, and goofy sort of film. It is a retelling of "Little Red Riding Hood" and done in such a way to remind you of a lot of recent television shows - i.e., Law & Order SVU, with a touch of "Citizen Kane' and even a little "Rashomon" thrown in for good measure.

Featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway (Red), Patrick Warburton (Wolf), Glenn Close (Granny), James Belushi (Woodsman, complete with a bad Swiss accent), Anthony Anderson (Det. Stork), David Ogden Stiers (Nicky Flippers), Xzibit (Chief Grizzly), and Chazz Palminteri (The Sheep), this movie rocks from the opening scene until the final conclusion (all in 79 minutes).

In my opinion the animation is a little cheezy, but I think that it was purposely done that way for you to pay more attention to the characters, after all this is a Warner Bros. 'toon, and most all of the Warners 'toons depend on character interaction.

The slapstick action is for kids and adults, and the one-liners go over the kids heads for the adults to enjoy. I did and I think that all of the nay-sayers will change their mind when they see this delightfully funny movie. On a scale of five, I give it 3 and 1/2.

dvdjunkie: I never was recommending any Ghibli films, castleinthesky was. I was simply telling you what the studio was since I know a little about it. In fact, I've only seen 1 Ghibli film, which was "Kiki's Delivery Service" which I agree with you, was awful! A bore-fest that simply wasn't worth it. So I was just trying to help you out, that's all.

2099net: Yes, I knew their first cartoon staring a superhero named "Aardman" was hand drawn, and I also knew that "Flushed Away" is going to be CG (even though they are trying to make it look like claymation as much as possible) but aside from that, have they done anything else that wasn't claymation in the past?

Lazario: I NEVER said in this thread that Shrek WASN'T overrated. While I enjoyed the original, I agree it is very overrated and Monster's Inc. blows it out of the water. I posted that link because YOU were asking us how many critics liked Shrek, and I was responding, that 132 did. Disagree with them? Okay. I disagree with a few of them too, but you can't deny that the film did have good reviews.

I never thought that, in 2006, it was humanly possible to make such BAD commercial animation. Second years students in my school can do animation that's ten times better than stuff in Hoodwinked. Hoodwinked is like staring directly into the sun. It burns my eyes. It won't even pass for video game intro anymore. Heck, Jimmy Neutron has better animation and designs. This looks terrible. Words fail me to describe what this looks like. It's just sad.

PatrickvD, have you actually seen "Hookwinked"?? Or are you basing what you say on what you have seen in the trailer. This is one delightful film, and yes the CG animation is a little cheesy, but it was done that way on purpose and if you pay attention to the dialogue in the film you will understand why. Does everything have to be so perfect that you can't enjoy a little bit of fun once in a while?

Anyone who hasn't seen this film yet, I know it just opened today, should not be condemning it until they actually see it. It is visually a very funny film, and the characters voices fit the characters to a tee. The music is really good, and I think that it was a whole lot of fun.
